For us Sikhs and in Punjabi, Singh name is given to all males which means Lion and like vise, Kaur is given to all females, meaning Princess.
Some people use Singh and Kaur as their last names and some use it as their middle name. My husband uses Singh as his middle and I use Kaur as my middle name...however my mom and mother in law use Kaur as their last names, they are not related to each other, other than through my marriage.
Now a days, you may come across girls that use Singh as their last name.

Just like how not all Patels, Smiths, etc are related to each other, same rule applies to Singh.
