Chapter Nine

Dev tiptoed into the room to find a sleeping Sona...there she lay, her head resting against the headboard, and she sleeping in her sit-up posture...Dev put down the food packets on the table and walked up-to to her...Sona woke up with a start as Dev intentionally cleared his throat a little louder than the normal so as to wake up his sleeping beauty..."arrey aap aa gaye?...sorry meri aankh lag gayi thi...maine notice hi nahin kiya..."...Sona spoke up feeling a little scared as the incident which had occurred 2 nights earlier was still fresh in her mind...when she had dozed off unknowingly sitting in one corner of the room and Dev had scolded her very badly...to her amusement this time Dev just smiled on without an ounce of anger or botheration on his face...taking off his blazer, he rolled up his shirt sleeves as he picked up the food packets and settled down next to Sona.

"yeh kya hai?...aapko mana kiya tha na...kahaan tha ki main ghar pe baaki sab keliye bana hua khana hi khaa loongi...phir bhi aap yeh sab bahar se kyun lekar aaye?...waise bhi bukhaar mein bahar ka khaana khana accha nahin hota ..."...Sona's blabbering was stopped as Dev suddenly stuffed a spoon full of her favorite Paalak Paneer in her mouth..."haan pata hai ki tumne kahaan tha ki tumhe ghar ka khana hi khana hai, par kya kare humare ghar pe itna yummy Paalak Paneer nahin banta na...isiliye bahar se laana pada"...Dev winked at Sona as she was quick to realize that this food had been cooked by her mother.

"aap mere ghar gaye the?...aapne maa se yeh sab banwakar laaya...kyun par?...kya jaroorat thi iss sab ki?...aapne unhe bataya toh nahin na ki mujhe bukhaar ho gaya hai?...woh khamkha pareshan ho jayengi..."...Sona was interrupted yet again as this time Dev's phone rang, looking at the screen he flashed his famous smile as he passed on the phone to Sona ..."lo tumhara koi khaas tumse baat karna chahta hai...baat karlo tumhe accha lagega..."...a confused Sona picked up the call as she realized it was her mother calling her...wait, had he just saved her name as Mumma' on his device?...great...this man and his peculiar habits...at one instance he admits to have married her for avenging his loss of love...and at the other instance he showers so much of love on her loved ones...she was too lost in her thought process as her mother called out to her for the nth time over the phone.

"kaisa hai mera shonu baccha?...bukhaar utar gaya na?...abhi jyaada body ache to nahin ho raha hai na baba?...Dev ne bataya mujhe ki kal raat teri tabiyat kitni jyaada kharab ho gayi thi...shonu you can always tell me ki tumhe kya bother kar raha hai...itna stress akele akele nahin lete baccha..."...tears rolled down her chubby cheeks as words failed to get formed inside her mouth...she continued weeping silently as Dev put his one hand over her shoulder and wiped off her tears with the other...gathering herself she spoke up..."I miss you Mumma...I miss you a lot...I'm sorry..."...Dev felt a tug in his heart for the first time after the Natasha fiasco, as he saw Sona sob.

Asha understood her dilemma as she put down the phone blessing her for the rest of her life and wishing her a speedy recovery...Sona continued crying as Dev had now engulfed her in a side hug to comfort her...her tears continued wetting his shirt as they failed to realize that both of them were now in a position too close for their comfort...they were snapped back to reality as Kichu knocked on the door to drop in a jug of water...quickly regaining their composure Dev opened the door for Kichu and waited for him to leave as he got back to feeding Sona her favorite dishes while they tried their best not to look directly into each other's eyes to avoid any sort of embarrassment.

After the dinner Dev came down to the living room as his mind was still bustling with a lot of unanswered questions...did he do the right thing by forcing Sona into this marriage ...would she ever in her wildest dream betray him and his friendship?...should he have given it a second thought before impulsively reacting to the letter Natasha had left behind for him...could there be some glitch in it?...his heart continued questioning his mind as he felt a hand on his shoulder...turning around he saw Ishwari standing behind him...probably she had not finished spitting her share of venom against Sona.

"kya haalat bana li hai apni Dev...woh bhi uss manhoos ladki keliye"...she stopped mid-sentence as Dev glared back at her dangerously..."haan haan jaanti hoon main ki tu uske khilaf ek shabd bhi nahin sun sakta...par isse yeh sach nahin badlega ki uss ladki ki wajah se tune apna pyaar humesha humesha keliye kho diya hai...aur ab dekho, maharani khud bimaar hokar baithi hai aur mere bete se apni seva kara rahi hai..."..."maa teri problem exactly kya hai?...yeh ki maine apna pyaar kho diya...yah yeh ki maine Sona se shaadi karli...yah phir yeh ki main uski care kar raha hoon, use recover hone mein help kar raha hoon...please maa...main pehle se hi bohot jyaada tensed hoon...tu apni puraani dushmani ke chakkar mein meri pareshaani aur mat badha...please jaa yahaan se..."...annoyed Dev was about to leave the place as Ishwari hit her final arrow..."meri pareshani yeh hai ki tum dono jindagi bhar uss kamre mein ajnabiyon ki tarah rahoge...tum dono ke beech kabhi pati - patni jaise rishta nahin ban payega aur naa hi iss ghar ko kabhi uska waaris milega..."...Dev stopped dead in his tracks.

"tujhe pata bhi hai ki tu kya bol rahi hai maa...kisne keh diya tujhse ki main aur Sona uss kamre mein ajnabiyon jaise rehte hai, ki humare beech koi rishta nahin hai...kaun aisi uut pataang cheezein tere dimaag mein daalta rehta hai?...hum dono bohot khush hai iss rishte se, humne apni marji se shaadi ki hai...aur please ab humse yeh expect mat karna ki har baar hum tujhe aake batayenge ki band darwaaje ke peeche hum dono kya kya karte hai...ek dusre se apna pyaar kaise jataate hai...yeh humari jindagi hai maa...humari personal life...please stay out of it"...Dev tried his best to hold up the facade.

"zabardasti se jude rishte ko shaadi nahin kehte hai beta...aur yeh naatak mere saamne mat kar...mujhe sab pata hai ki kis tarah se uss ladki ne Natasha ko teri jindagi se door kiya, aur tune gusse mein aakar usse jabardasti shaadi karli taaki tu use jindagi bhar ka gam de sake...ek bina jazbaatoan ke rishte ko nibhane keliye majboor kar sake...jab subah teri pyaari patni tere papa ke saamne apna rona ro rahi thi na tab maine sab sun liya tha...mujhe acche se pata hai ki kal subah maine tum dono ke kamre mein jo kuch bhi dekha woh sab ek naatak tha...tum dono ke beech pati-patni jaisa kya...koi bhi rishta nahin hai"...Ishwari concluded triumphantly as Dev looked on shocked...how could Sona do this to him...he had warned her not to reveal their little secret to anyone ...despite of that she had gone ahead and confessed to his father!!!!

"to ab tune yeh karna bhi shuru kar diya hai...logon ke kamre ke bahar khade hokar unke kamre mein jhaanka aur unki baati chori chupe sunna shuru kar diya hai tune...I don't believe this...yaar privacy naam ki koi cheez hai yah nahin iss ghar mein...hadd hai"...Dev gave his last shot for the damage control as his facade had almost got revealed to his mother..."jaakar apni patni ko kyun nahin sunata yeh privacy ka lecture...main usse poochne nahin gayi thi yeh sab...woh khud poori duniya ke saamne cheek ke aailaan karegi to ismein meri kya galti?..."...Dev paced upto his room as he didn't have the patience to speak to his mother any further as she was hell bent on getting the truth out of him.

Dev came back to his room to find a soundly sleeping Sona...there was a slight serene smile on her face...the innocence which dripped through every feature of hers told another tale...no this has to be something else...she might have spoken to his dad, she might have told him certain things...but certainly his mother was trying to create a ruckus out of nowhere...one thing was for sure that every since his childhood his mother had tried to instigate him against Sona on every possible instance...over the time he had successfully gauged her intentions and safeguarded his Cheeku...but now the situation was a different one...the person in question had already broken his trust once...she could do it once again too...questions flooded his brain endlessly as he decided to call it a day and wait for the new day to dawn ...this time everything would be face-to-face...he would directly question Sona about her confessions.

The next morning Dev was sweating it out in the gym when his dad approached him...he had always been cordial with his dad...his bitterness towards his mother had never affected his pure relationship with his father..."Dev bete, kaam kaise chal raha hai ...inn dino jab main ghar pe hota hoon tab tum office mein rehte ho...aur jab main office chala jata hoon toh tum ghar pohunch jaate ho...koi theek se baat he nahin ho paati...isiliye socha ki aaj mauka dhoond ke subah subah tumse baat kar loon...mera beta ab akela thodi na raha...ab to shaadi ho gayi hai uski...ab use sirf apni hi nahin balki apni patni ki bhi jimmedari nibhani hai...sahi keh raha hoon na main?..."...Jay patted his shoulder as Dev flashed a genuine smile across to him.

"Dev life mein aise bohot saari situations ayengi jahaan tum decide nahin kar paoge ki kaun sahi hai aur kaun galat...par ek baat humesha yaad rakhna ...humesha apne dil ki sunna...kyunki dimaag kai baar wahi dekh paata hai jo log use dikhana chahte hai...aur ankho dekha humesha sach nahin hota..."...Dev understood what his dad meant...he had advised him to follow his heart while taking any decision related to Sona...his words sought of echoed Dev's thoughts from last night...the father-son duo continued their heart-to-heart talk for quite some time before both got back to their rooms to head to office.

As Dev finished all his lined up meetings for the day, his mind unknowingly wandered back to the incidents which took place this morning after he had got back to his room finishing his conversation with his dad...as he had entered the room he had seen Sona dressed in a bathrobe sitting at the dresser drying her hair...she seemed to be carefree at that moment...the awkwardness of Dev stepping into the room at any moment and seeing her like this didn't seem to bother her...putting aside her behavioral patterns he concentrated on his own thinking...why was he ogling at her like a fool...was he getting attracted to her?...no he can't...he's just her friend right...so what if now they were married?...he had married her for revenge...and so should be his stance...but he couldn't deny fact that being a man and staying in the same room with a girl, who was actually his legally wedded wife and extremely beautiful at the same time was actually spoiling his brain...he tried to put a stop to his wandering thoughts and the best option he found was to rebuke Sona for dressing such alluringly infront of him.

"Sona..."...he shouted as the poor girl jumped out of her skin in utter fear..."kya hai yeh sab...yeh kamra sirf tumhara nahin hai...yahaan main bhi rehta hoon...yeh sab yahaan nahin chalega...yeh sab karke, aise kapde pehenkar mere saamne yu innocent hoke baithe rehne se kya prove karna chahti ho tum...sab samajh aata hai mujhe...yeh sab naatak hai tumhara...humesha yeh jatao ki tumhe mujhme koi interest nahin hai aur phir aise saari cheezein karo taaki agar main kuch galat kar baithu to tum saara iljaam mujhpar daal do...accha hai na, ek teer se do nishaane ho jayenge...tumhara mujhe paane ka sapna bhi poora ho jayega aur saara iljaam bhi mujhpe ayega...logon ko lagega ki maine apni khushi keliye tumhe force kiya..."...Sona stood there clutching the edge of the dresser for support as she could make a head and tale out of what exactly was Dev trying to blame her for...Dev continued his rant without realizing that his talks were actually making no sense at all now...it was quite late when he realized he was overreacting for a small issue and left the room haphazardly...

Dev was now feeling guilty for his behavior...Sona had just recovered from her illness and his foolishness might have scared her off even more...he wanted to talk to her but after the morning incident couldn't gather courage to call her directly...instead he decided to call Kichu..."Kichu bhaiyya, ghar pe sab theek hai na?...aapki didi mera matlab hai ki Sonakshi Bhabhi ab unki tabiyat kaisi hai?...unhe phirse bukhaar to nahin hua na?..."...asked a concerned Dev trying hard not to reveal his underlying true feelings to Kichu..."bhaiyya ji bhabhi to bilkul theek hai...aaj to kamre se bahar bhi aayi...aur khush bhi lag rahi hai bohot...yahin par hai, rukiye main unhe phone de deta hoon...aap unhi se baat kar lijiye..."...Kichu was about to transfer the call to Sona when Dev stopped him..."nahin unhe mat batana ki maine call kiya tha...maine to sirf aise hi tabiyat poochne keliye...par ab theek hai...main phone rakhta hoon..."...he wondered how long will he avoid talking to her...he decided to apologize to her as soon as he gets home.

"aur khush bhi lag rahi hai bohot"...Kichu's words kept ringing in his head as he was driven back home by his chauffer...morning he had behaved so rudely with her...how is it that she had got back to normal so soon...was his facade of hating her to the core wearing off day-by-day?...or was she getting used to his constant bickering and now it really didn't seem to be affecting her at all...he was so occupied in his thoughts as he failed to realize that they were already home..."sahib, ghar aa gaya..."...the driver's words brought him back to reality...getting down from the car he hesitantly walked into his own house with the hope of Sona not being the first person he encounters this evening...but the sight that met his eyes as he entered the living room was enough to amaze him.

Jay was joyously instructing the house helps to prepare Dev's favorite dishes for dinner, the table was set out as though the Dixit's were hosting a grand party tonight..."dad...yeh sab kya ho raha hai?...yeh itni saari tayyariyan?...koi celebration hai kya?..."...Dev asked all confused..."celebration to hai bete...after all tumne aaj itna bada project jo haasil kiya hai...tumhe pata hai main 2 saaloan se iss firm ke saath collaboration karne keliye joonj raha tha...par jo kaam main na kar saka woh tumne kar dikhaya...tumhara bheja hua presentation unhe itna pasand aaya ki unhone turant tumhe Indore bulaya hai deal sign karne keliye...tumhe kal subah hi nikalna hoga...maine saari tayyariyan karli hain..."...Jay blessed Dev for his achievement and pulled him in for dinner...Dev realized Sona was missing from the scene...he wanted to ask where she was but was feeling odd to do so...finally observing his dilemma Jay spoke up..."Sona ko dhoond rahe ho?...usne to khana kha liya kab ka...filhaal kamre mein packing kar rahi hogi...aakhir pehli baar shaadi ke baad tum dono bahar jaa rahe ho...tayyariyan to karni hogi na use kai saari..."...Sona would also be accompanying him on his business trip?...now this was all the more confusing for Dev, but he chose to be quiet.

After dinner as Jay went up to his room, Ishwari asked Dev to sit with her as she wanted to talk to him..."main jaanti hoon ki meri baatein tujhe kabhi pasand nahin aati...tu mujhse bohot chidta hai...par kya karun maa hoon na to raha nahin jaata...tu pehli baar ghar se bahaar business trip pe jaa raha hai...har baar Jay aur tum saath jaya karte the ...par iss baar tujhe akele hi sab kuch sambhalna hoga...apna dhyaan rakhna...apne gusse pe kaaboo rakhna...aur haan Sona bhi tere saath jaa rahi hai...to tum dono apni nayi jindagi mein khadam rakhoge...mera aashirwaad humesha tumahre saath hai..."...she blessed Dev by placing a hand on his head.

"maa tu kehna kya chahti hai?...Sona bhi mere saath jaa rahi hai...to hum dono apni nayi jindagi mein khadam rakhenge, matlab?...main kuch samajh nahin paa raha hoon...please saaf saaf bol..."...dev demanded...flashing a cunning smile Ishwari continued..."tu bohot bhola haina Dev...isiliye woh ladki humesha tere bholepan ka fayda utha leti hai...tu itna bhi nahi samajhta...tu wahaan business trip par jaa raha hai...ab woh wahan tere saath jaakar kya karegi...par nahin jidd karke baith gayi tere dad ke saamne ki mujhe bhi bhej do Dev ke saath...aur tere dad ne aaj tak use kisi baat keliye mana kiya hai kya...to iss baat keliye bhi maan gaye...haan waise ek tareeke se sahi hi hai...tum dono ki nayi nayi shaadi hui hai...yahaan hum sab ke beech tum logon ko privacy bhi to nahin milti hogi theek se...isiliye usne socha hoga ki business trip ke saath saath tum dono keliye honeymoon bhi ho jayega...ab main kaun hoti hoon tum dono ke beech bolne waali...tum dono ki jindagi hai...tum log hi decide karo...chalo main chalti hoon..."...saying so Ishwari walked up to her room leaving behind a hurt Dev.

Dev went back to his room after quite some time thinking that Sona must have slept by now...but to his surprise she was still awake, very enthusiastically packing her & his stuff for the trip..."aap aa gaye?...sorry maine aaj khane pe aapka wait nahi kiya...woh dad ne kahan ki jaldi khana khalo aur packing karne lag jao...waise maine yeh sab pack to kar liya hai par aap ek baar dekh lo...agar kuch reh gaya ho to bata dena...main aati hoon..."...Sona went off to change into her night-clothes as Dev looked around at the packed bags in disgust...irritated he just kept the bags down and went to sleep without even bothering to change his office clothes...when Sona came back she was surprised to see the bags dumped on the floor and Dev being fast asleep..."shayad thak gaye honge...isiliye...koi baat nahi...kal subah uth ke dekh lenge..."...arranging the bags in a corner so as to avoid Dev colliding with them mistakenly she went to sleep on her side of the bed.

Dev who had been pretending to be asleep woke up as soon as Sona put off the lights...his mind pouring umpteen questions to his heart..."kyun kar rahi ho tum yeh sab Sona?...subah mujhe laga ki tumpe chillake maine galti ki...par ab lag raha hai ki main sahi tha...tum yeh sab kuch mujhe paane keliye hi kar rahi ho na...kyun Sona why?...tum apni jidd mein itni paagal ho chuki ho ki ab tumhe yeh sab karna bhi sahi lagta hai?...tumhe lagta hai ki tum mere saath akele bahar jaogi...tang kapde pehenkar mere saamne aaogi to main apna control kho dunga aur tum mujhe haasil kar logi?...tum kyun nahin samajh paa rahi ho ki main tumhe sirf apna dost maanta hoon...maine kabhi tumhare baare mein aisa nahin socha...phir yeh sab kyun...haan agar shayad hum dono sirf dost ki tarah rehte to shayad aage chalkar mujhe tumse pyaar bhi ho jaata aur hum dono ke beech normal pati-patni jaisa rishta bhi ban jaata...par aaj yeh sab karke tumne mujhe bohot dukh diya hai Sona...main tumhe iss sab keliye kabhi maaf nahin karunga..."...hot tears flowed down his cheeks as sleep eluded him for that night.
