I find it hard to believe that Asha sang more songs than Lata in total
Lata started playback singing much earlier, in the 1940s and continued actively till the 90s.
Asha also started singing in the 40s but in the 1950s she mostly sang the songs rejected by Lata or Geeta Dutt who were the top singers back then
Both Lata and Asha have sung in dozens of regional languages, particularly for Marathi and Bengali films
Many of the Music directors back in the 50s and 60s were Bengalis and they usually recorded Hindi and Bengali versions of the same song by Lata or Asha

I think Lata sang more songs total than Asha...Lata has more duets with Rafi, Kishore while Asha sang a lot of the club/ cabaret type songs back then
Asha has always been a very competitive person and I dont think Lata cares much abt being in Guiness Book of Records, shes much above all that.

True. I am very surprised, though it's possible that she sang more songs but Lata's songs were in general more successful, leading to the perception that Lata has sung more songs than others.

Being more prolific does not necessarily make one more successful. 😃

^^Lata used to turn down item songs in her youth. She sang very few, like Chadti Jawani and Mera Naam Rita Christina. If she had sung more, then she would also be considered versatile.

Bold - I am surprised too, those days movies used to have a lot of songs and most of them were by Lata except 1 or 2 which were done by others - mostly Asha.. I think if it's true Asha surpassing Lata must've happened after the 80s

I heard SBP has recorded 40,000 songs, Chita 25,000 but it must be easy to do that now

In those days they took days to record a song, All the singers and musicians must be present at the studio while recording the song and one mistake by anyone, they have to start all over again...

So just as Lata Ji's song became more popular it was assumed that she had sung more songs ?
