"A father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light to show us the way."
-- Anonymous
"Hey!" Jatin exclaimed as he saw Soha sitting alone on her bed in her room.
She looked up and greeted him with a wide smile.
"What are you doing, princess?" He asked as he looked in the notebook she was holding. There was a drawing of Sonakshi, Soha and Dev standing together, holding hands. Sonakshi was yet to be coloured.
"I am making a family picture." Soha said, and held the notebook up in her hands, "perfect, just perfect!"
She resumed her drawing and Jatin continued to observe her. She had become extra happy in the past two weeks. And of course the credit went to Dev. He had been a great father. Or so everyone said, at least.
Actually, he really must be. After all, they won the best 'father-daughter duo' award at summer camp. Jatin' s mind went back to the time when he had also won such an award at Soha' s previous school in Kolkata. But of course he had to give it up. He wasn't that fortunate to have this princess as his daughter.
Dev was her father. And he was a good father. Asha aunty and Dida always kept saying that. Saurabh also believed that. Even the person who hates him the most, Sonakshi, herself admitted it. And Soha had called him Papa in just one week's time. Yeah, he must be good...
"Why is your face looking so sad?" Soha asked innocently.
"Sad? No way. I am happy." Jatin shrugged, trying to pull off a nice smile.
And that nice smile was soon rewarded by a frown and an out-of-nowhere punch.
"Ow!" He cried, clutching his stomach. He scowled at Soha, who was still busy frowning at him.
"No lying. Do you want your nose to get bigger like Pinocchio? No right. Then tell me the truth." Soha demanded.
Jatin scowled again and then said with a sigh of defeat, "fine! I am sad because you are going to Ishwari Nivaas next week and I won't be able to meet you there!"
It was a stupid idea. Dev would come to Bose house for a week and then Sona would go to his house for a week and so on. Jatin didn't know what to think of it. He could only say that the vibes were not helping.
"That's not true!" Soha exclaimed, "It's a pretty simple route to Papa's house. You can ask Papa once. He would invite you for a day. There are pretty cool people there, especially Elena Mashi Chachi and Golu. And the Mami there is really good at murdering English, so you are gonna get some entertainment dose too. Hai na, perfect?"
Yeah, but I won't be welcomed really. Jatin mused.
He cleared his throat and said, "You are going to have a lot of fun there. I won't be of any use."
"But what if anyone doesn't know how to play scrabble?" Soha asked.
"You can teach Golu and he would play with you. And your mom is there for that too." Jatin reassured.
"What if they don't know any great Bengali stories?" Soha asked again.
"Well, your Grandma knows a lot of other good stories. I bet she can sing lullabies too." Came the reply.
"I don't like lullabies. I am too cool for them. And what if no one does push-ups with me sitting on their backs?" Soha asked, now annoyed.
"Your Papa will." Jatin answered trying to keep a smile, "And look Soha, the whole deal is that you get to spend your time with both families. Your Grandma and everyone else would wait one week for you. Heck, they have waited seven years, haven't they? Then you should try to live with them, adjust with them, understand them, befriend them. So that, you accept them as family and vice versa, you see. I am sure Sona must have told you. And I promise, during your second one-week stay at Dixits, I would pay a visit after asking your dad, happy?"
"No! Not Happy, not happy at all!" Soha cried out, as the wide smile she had managed to keep dropped completely, "you are making excuses because you don't want to play with me!"
She got up and went to the extreme end of the bed and sat there with her back turned towards him.
Uh-oh.
After mentally slapping himself twice, Jatin got up and sat beside her.
"That's not true, Soha!" He said but she refused to listen. He poked her stomach, and a bubble of laughter escaped her. He poked her again.
He was going to tickle her with both hands when she jerked them away and turned towards him with an imapssive businesswoman look, exactly like her mother.
"Look, Suhana Bose believes in fair deals, that is what I am offering you. You are absolutely right. I would have loads of fun there. But not you Mister. You will sulk at your home, because you won't have Soha with you." Suhana said, "Still don't want to visit?"
"That's okay if you are happy." Jatin said.
Which is not exactly a lie.. Jatin thought to himself.
"And if I am not happy there, and I miss you?" She asked.
"Then, you already know." Jatin smiled.
"You have to say it." Soha demanded.
Jatin looked at her for a moment and hesitatingly put a hand on her head, unsure of how the gesture would be welcomed.
Soha smiled in return, filling him with a new kind of faith. Faith that nothing had changed. Faith that he had a right on her, that she had given him a right on her. He smiled ear to ear.
"I'll be there for you." He said, fully meaning it.
