I am not sure of this genre in Hindi. But Malayalam and Tamil industry is full of movies where we have a grey hero, especially the Malayalam movies of 80s and early 90s. The scripting of these shows were so great that you root for the hero/heroine when he kills. Maybe that is why I am able to connect to Maya because she reminds me of those strong characters of Malayalam script. So if any one of you get these movies with English sub titles do check out
Malayalam

Rajavinte Makan- The movie that took Padmashree Bharat Mohanlal to super stardom. He played Vincent Gomez a gangster. Loosely adapted on Sidney Sheldon's Rage of Angels this movie will not make you leave the seat from first scene to last scene

Adhipan- Again Mohanlal. Thriller. Revenge perfect murders

Panchagni- Career best role of Geetha as Indira who is on a parole after a murder. Her need for justice overcomes everything, even her need to have a life

Devasuram- Mangalsseri Neelakantan( Another career best role of Mohanlal). Like Maya you will love to hate this man. But in the end, ends up loving him.

New Delhi- Mammooty steals the show in this thriller

Naduvazigal- Again Mohanlal and the last scene phew it is such a thriller

Tamil

Naayakan- Watch Kamalahasan in this Mani Ratnam movie and antagonist will be never the same again.

This is something I remember now. Will put as and when I remember it.

There is another tamil movie. Dont remember the name. It had Chimbu and Nayan Tara and Raima sen i guess. It was a rat race between Chimbu and raima who were high school lovers but Raima turns obsessive. And kuch toh kaand hota hai they break up. Years later he falls for nayan. And is bff is sandhya. And end mein raima kidnaps sandhya or nayan and chimbu pura fass jata hai.
Even another one. With Dhanush. His 1st or 2nd movie.

Btw in malayalam, we had MANICHITRATAARU. The most epic one. Who doesn't love shobhana in that. She was not negative, but her role as a multiple personality disorder patient was dope. Like everyone fell in love with her for the portrayal of gangaa.

Hindi mein Gupt is classic. Darr too. Baazigar, Don. Agneepath(righteous though).

You cant place Baazigar and Gupt in the range of movies I have put. The script is at a different level for the Malayalam and Tamil movie. They are not simply revenge movies, character sketch is extremely complex.
Nayakan won 3 National Awards including best actor for Kamalahasan and it is listed In Time Magazine All time best 100 movies
Vincent Gomez and Mangalaseri Neelakantan are cult characters in Kerala which the characters of neither Baazigar or Gupt can demand

The Mohanlal starer Drishyam though it was not an intentional murder the way Georgekutty and his family burries the crime is really a thriller to watch
Then Aaryan, Irupathaam Nootandu there are so many in the list. Most of them are Mohanlal starers from early 90s. Don't know it is whether because of the actor or because of the character or both we easily sympathise with them

I don't know anything much about Indian regional cinema. So can't comment on that. Even BW I hardly watch anymore.

But a great movie in recent times where a female protagonist turns into a killer is "The Brave One" starring Jodi Foster. She and her fiance are attacked and he is killed. Desire for revenge overcomes her after she wakes up in the hospital. She starts to feel for other victims. She becomes a vigilante and kills bad people. You know she is wrong but you can't help rooting for her. You don't want her to be caught. That was a good movie.

The only thing one needs to do when presenting a Grey character or an Anti Hero is to Justify them, and make people empathise with them. Then the character will sell themselves to the audience. It helps to have a skilled actor in the role too. Like how Jennifer makes Maya look vulnerable as well as vicious sometimes. As long as you can sell the character you got yourself a hit!

@Darcy justification is the key in the case of grey characters. Between the story you mentioned look like that of Hindi movie NH10, but not exactly
@alanta Mohanlal made those characters memorable, but then great credit should be given to those scripts where they justify the grey character

@KS nothing can match Nayakan.

@sunithi gupt or sigappu rojakal you dont that much empathize with the person doing murders. The movies I mentioned you root for them to win.
