CHAPTER 10 (A). MARRIAGE? WHAT MARRIAGE?

Previously on Love...

Khushi continued to narrate the story and it took all Maan and Geet's willpower not to react to Khushi's words. The way she met Arnav, the way her sister's wedding got cancelled, the way Arnav ruined her reputation in Lucknow, how Shyam entered her life, how she entered AR and then entered ASR's house Shantivan. From the first meet to marriage and them leaving the house and coming here, Khushi didn't leave anything out. As she finished her narration, she continued to sob on Geet's shoulders. She felt peace wash over her. She had let her family know! She was not hiding things from them and lying to them anymore! She had come clean! She felt lightness inside her and she let out a deep sigh of relief.

But Khushi didn't notice how Geet was looking at Maan in shock or Maan looking at Khushi and Geet with anger. And she also didn't know that right at that moment Arnav had arrived at the doors of Khurana Mansion. And she definitely didn't know that her life was going to turn upside down in next few minutes!

"I cannot believe this! I cannot!", boomed Maan's voice and Khushi looked up in alarm. Maan, oblivious to Khushi's feelings, continued to speak, "How dare Arnav treat you like this! He has no right to behave like this! So narrow minded! But then what else should I expect? Typical Indian men! No respect for woman! Sochte hain paav ki jhooti hain! These Indians have no respect. How dare they treat my sister like this! My sister's life has been destroyed because of these people! But then, why am I shocked? India destroys everything. They took my mom, my aunt, my dad and now my sister too! How dare Arnav..."

"MAAN!", Geet shouted and Maan was pulled out of his anger. He turned to look at Geet who looked at Khushi and Maan took in a sharp breath. His sister was hiding her face in Geet's arms sobbing her heart out. He realized how much his ranting must have scared her sister. He moved to console her when a servant arrived and announced that Mr. Raizada had arrived and was waiting for them in the main hall. That was it. Maan's anger had found its target. And a furious Maan headed downstairs to confront Arnav for his actions.

Arnav was checking out his mobile when there came a roar, "HOW DARE YOU!"

Arnav looked up and was shocked to see Maan storming towards him. He stood up and before he could take any action, Maan had delivered a punch to his face. Arnav fell down in shock. But before he could comprehend the situation, Maan had grabbed his collar and started to punch his face. After few punches, Arnav came out of the shock. He instinctively grabbed Maan's hand to stop him. He pushed Maan away and stood up. He raised his hand and before they knew it they were all out fighting. One punch after another, both threw at each other. Eyes got bruised, hands started bleeding both men continued to fight.

STOP IT!", came a shout and Maan and Arnav, who were holding each other's collar with their hands ready to deliver the next punch, turned to look at the stairs where Geet stood with flashing eyes with Khushi standing right behind her with fear written on her face. Geet stormed towards them and physically pushed Maan away. Maan stumbled back while Arnav stood angry and confused.

"Yeh kya kar rahe hain? What are you doing?", Geet shouted.

"What am I doing? I am treating him the way he should be treated. The way he treated my sister, he deserves each and every one of my beating."

"What?", Arnav cried out in confusion, "What did I do to your sister? I don't understand!"

"You don't know what you did to my sister? You don't...", Maan lunged forward to hit Arnav again. Arnav took a step back in surprise just as Geet jumped in front of Maan with hands held wide, stopping him effectively.

Maan growled annoyed and then spat, "What about blackmailing my sister to marry you? Huh? Answer me! What about that?"

"It did not happen!", Arnav retorted, feeling annoyed.

"Hah!", Maan let out a shout as he pushed Geet away, "That is because Khushi claimed to kill herself! Or else you would have done it! You would have blackmailed her into marrying you!"

"Enough!", Arnav hissed, "Enough is enough! I didn't do anything wrong. I did what I had to do at that moment! Anyone in that situation would have done the same thing!"

"Oh really?", Maan chuckled mirthlessly and then glared, "What if somebody did the same to your sister? What if somebody blackmailed your sister into marrying them? What if she was disowned by her family for eloping? What if she had to prove her innocence by marrying a guy who humiliated her, caused her physical harm and treated her like a dirt? What if...", Maan was cut off by Arnav.

As Maan spoke each and every event that happened with Khushi, Arnav saw all those moments flash through his mind. Only this time it was his Di in Khushi's place. He imagined someone blackmailing his sister to marry him. He imagined Naaniji throwing Di out because she married Shyam. And as he watched Shyam treat his Di the same way he treated Khushi, he felt his blood boil.

"ENOUGH!", Arnav roared interrupting Maan. He glared at Maan and his chest heaved in anger. Maan's face reflected satisfaction as he smirked, "Ah! Now your anger sparks! Now you are indignant! But where was your indignity when you treated my sister the same way? Your sister is supposed to be kept on rose petals while my sister has to suffer at your hands? No one should harm a single hair on your sister's head but my sister can be tortured by you anytime you want?"

Maan's anger raised its head again, "Why? Only because she had nobody to stand by her right? Because she was poor right? Not anymore! Her fortunes have changed. She has a brother now who is also rich. And he will do anything to keep her safe. Even keep her away from a man like you!"

Arnav's eyes widened. All he could think was Maan was going to take his Khushi away from him. No! No! As Arnav's heart beat faster in panic, his emotions clouded his judgment. And whenever ASR got emotional, his logic went out of the window and he did something impulsive that always hurt others. Last time this happened, he tried to blackmail Khushi into marrying him. And this time...

"You know what! I have no desire to stand here and listen to your crap!", Arnav snarled, "I am ASR! And I refuse to allow you to treat me like this!" He turned around suddenly and marched towards where Khushi stood. He grabbed her hand and started to drag her towards the door all the while telling her, "Koi bhi mujhe iss tarah se beijjat nahi kar sakta Khushi! Aur main tumhein aise logon ke saath rehne de nahi sakta! Yaad rakho Khushi, aaj ke baad se yeh log tumhaare kuch nahi lagte! (No one can insult like this Khushi! And I can't let you stay with such people! Remember Khushi, from today onwards these people mean nothing to you!)"

Khushi was in shock. What was happening here? First her brother and Arnavji fought. And then they threw accusations at each other. And then Arnavji accepted that what he did with her, he wouldn't have let it happen to his sister! It broke her heart to knew that Arnavji had so less value of her in his eyes. And then her brother had declared that he stood by her. That had given solace to her weeping heart. For once, there was someone in her life who had the power and the strength to protect her from anyone who meant to harm her in smallest manner. And now Arnavji was taking her away from the family she just found. For years, she had been longing for her real family. For years, she wanted to belong somewhere. And now when she had found that family, Arnavji was taking her away from them.

Here was a family that was ready to fight for her against the injustice they thought had been dealt to her and here is Arnavji, the love of her life, but who cared only about his insult. Khushi raised her accusing eyes towards Arnav who simply continued to drag her away. But then all those sweet moments she spent with Arnavji came to her mind and her accusing eyes softened. On one side is my new found family and on other side is my love, how can I choose between them?

Just then Khushi's other hand was grabbed and she was jerked to a stop. Arnav turned to see why Khushi had stopped while Khushi turned to see who had grabbed her. Both saw Maan standing there holding Khushi's hand tightly. He moved ahead and grabbing Arnav's hand, he wrenched Khushi's hand away.

"Tum meri behen ko yahaan se nahi le ja sakte! (You cannot take my sister away!)", Maan uttered as he pulled his sister behind him. Khushi was too stunned to react and could only watch with wide eyes.

"Yeah right!", Arnav snarled, "I am taking her with me and that is final! And you cannot stop me! Because she is my wife! And I have every right to take her away with me!"

As Arnav glared at Maan, Maan gave a smirk so chilling, that Arnav felt a foreboding sensation. Whatever came out of Maan's mouth next was not going to be good for Arnav, Arnav felt. And he was right.

"Arnav Singh Raizada! You think you are so smart, a true genius right?", Maan mocked and Arnav's heart thudded a little faster.

"But you better think twice before calling Khushi your wife! Is she your wife? Remember Arnav? Remember! Is she your wife?", Maan asked as he started to circle Arnav. Khushi looked at her brother curiously. What was he talking about?

"It seems you don't know what I am talking about!", Maan came to stand in front of Arnav, "Then allow me to enlighten you! According to Hindu Marriage Act, no marriage is legal unless there are witnesses if done through traditional way and the proof of marriage is shown to the registrar and certificate is obtained. Or else, they marry by court marriage where you marry in front of judge with your family or friends witnessing it."

Arnav blanched as he took a step back. Maan let out a loud chuckle, "Aha! Now you understood!", Maan mocked. Behind him, Khushi looked on curiously. She didn't understand the reasoning behind Maan's explanation.

Maan continued to focus on Arnav, "Yes Arnav! Yes! Khushi is not your wife in the eyes of law! She is not your legal wife!" Behind him, Khushi staggered back and sat down on the chair behind her. Her eyes teared up as she looked at her brother and Arnav uncomprehendingly.

"Oh Arnav! In all impulsiveness you forgot to register your marriage. You didn't legalise your wedding. And hence, Khushi is not your wife and you have no right on her!", Maan smirked. And then he turned serious, "Now I sincerely request you to get lost! You are no longer part of her life! Get lost and never come back!", he hissed. Arnav looked at him with wide eyes. "I said GET OUT!", Maan roared and Arnav unable to take the insult turned around and stormed away leaving behind a gloating Maan, a surprised Geet and a stupefied and tearful Khushi.

Warning: The rant by Maan about Indians is not my opinion. I love my country but Maan is simply reacting like this due to the trauma he faced in his childhood and has deep rooted fear of India.

By the way, didn't I tell you in Betrayal that the whole non contract marriage will be important later? I have waited for three years just for this moment! So eager to see your reaction to most poignant scene of this story!
