Chapter 23: A minds love vs a hearts love
Even though Vicky made an early exit from home, but he didn't reach office till very late in the afternoon only then being informed about Maan's numerous queries on his whereabouts. Once he was in his cabin, he asked for a brief of all his projects and thought for a while before dialling his brother's office number. This being the first time, since usually they talked through employees, even now when everything was ok between the two.
TRING the phone went, and Maan jumped up instantly shooting a scared look towards Geet and rushed to disconnect the call. Being afraid that the monstrous machine would call again, he left the receiver to his side so no one could possibly call him but he didn't care, for as long as Geet's sleep wasn't troubled.
Vicky watched his phone call once again meeting the same end, raising the anger quotient within him then all of a sudden his mobile came to life with Meera's smiling face flashing on it. He spent the morning thinking of Geet's accusation, was it true did he make decisions on behalf of Meera. Maybe he did, but it was with good intentions unlike Maan's. He wanted to see Meera happy, failing to realise that only he could make her happy. The war between his mind and heart intensified after last night's allegation. He spent the morning sitting by the river banks fighting against his heart, much like how the tides fought against the barbed wall. He did right; Meera wouldn't like to live in house which always clashed. The three Khuranna's seemed to be arguing all the time, always running away and now Geet seemed to be doing the same thing. Somewhere he believed Meera would do the same, honestly a part of him was also scared that Meera would leave as soon as she saw his broken family. He'd rather remember the good times than make bad ones, Meera was better off being a Gupta than turning into a miserable Khuranna, who'd probably escape the minute she realises what a big mistake she did by getting involved with such a manic household.
'Sir files' Trina intruded his thoughts letting the rest of his thoughts slip away which he was happy to do, fighting with one's own heart was a difficult task.
Sasha tried working but she couldn't, in the end she transferred her end of the work to Adi and Tasha, complaining about a headache when in reality it was the heart that burnt in pain. So here she was now, in her quiet cabin searching for 'Mrs Maan Khuranna' but she also met with nothing like Geet, other than the flashes of a faceless Sameera. Huffing in distress, she thought to snoop around. This 'IT' seemed to be quite important in her MKs life.
Geet stretched her arms releasing the stiffness that took over the body, letting out a yawn she raised her head taking in the different atmosphere stopping at Maan only then remembering where she is. With an open mouth, she immediately flipped so her bottom was positioned onto the sofa like it should be and then closed her mouth seeing Maan's awkward stare.
'Sorry, I was bored here alone' She apologised looking down while her hand schooled down her hair after placing her scarf to the neck, she then sorted her outfit and proceeded to fold his waistcoat with a disordered look.
'Its ok' he attempted before going back to his work, which she assumed would be quite important seeing the scowl on his face. But little did she know, he was still hunting down that perfect sofa set, big enough for Geet to sleep on.
Adi just about had enough, his morning was spent hunting down the culprit while he spent his afternoon at the police station, with the said fraud. Seeing him cry for mercy, made his soft heart weep in uneasiness; this was clearly not his cup of tea. Yet, he abided by orders and forced a smile seeing the married woman of the imprisoned ex-employee run to him in help, who then left cursing his linage. Just when he thought it couldn't get any worse, Sasha called with a headache asking him to take on her duty. 'Great just great' he mumbled getting into his cabin with a stack of files.
'Thank you' Maan heard Geet say with her hands outstretched with his waistcoat, he smiled a little taking it from her but she just walked away to the sofa in a hurry. He would have continued to stare but couldn't, seeing her flinch under his gaze.
'How long was I sleeping for?' she asked trying to locate a clock
'I don't know maybe 4-5 hours' although he said it quite precisely with no harm intended, he knew that was a mistake hearing her yelp in shock.
'I'm so sorry I was meant to work, do you want me to do anything' she asked running over to his desk to sit on the opposite chair, ready to work.
'Yes there is actually something for you to do' he said meeting her demanding confused eyes
'Nisha send some hot food in, whatever the cafeteria is serving, oh' he conversed stopping at his watch in worry
'Fine, whatever snacks you can find' he finished the call and acted to be working when in reality he snuck glances at Geet who smiled warmly having an idea of his intended purpose.
Vicky's phone beeped once again like it did that day and all the previous days, the message beacon going red. 'Answer my calls Viks or else I'll cut you up' it said causing him to smile at the irony, she was already cutting out his heart but then again he had only himself to blame. He looked out the large window behind, overlooking the showcased Delhi with beaded yellow lights. It was easy to forget oneself in the busy life, never mind pain. Yet it still beat, loud and steady thumbing in glorified pain. Vicky tried focusing on the increasing traffic, rush hour was at its peak adding to the trouble were the pedestrians running past beeping cars. The hustle, the buzz and everything seemed to be the same but not him. His heart remembered Meera and their time in traffic, the endless stares and the escape to the road side stalls. Everything reminded him of his Meera and everything equally added to his frustration causing him to throw back his chair in annoyance.
Geet without showing any courtesy ripped open the packet of crisp and shoved it down her throat, feeling the pangs of hunger attack as soon as the food was placed in front of her by Nisha, who stared at her in surprise.
'Sorry I'm really hungry' she mumbled embarrassedly biting at the chocolate bar while Maan passed over a bottle of water with a fond smile
'Calm down Geet, it won't run away' Maan said in a humorous tone again shocking Nisha who stood there firmly watching Maan tap Geet's back who hiccupped violently.
'I told you to slow down' he spoke in an angry, once again giving her the water bottle to which Geet smiled sheepishly making him smile too, again Nisha stood there open mouthed. What was happening here?
'Nisha can you go and get Vicky' Maan asked finally turning to Nisha who nodded in acceptance trying to recover from the shock.
'Vicky's here' an excited Geet shouted in surprise, again confusing Nisha who saw Maan reach for Geet's hand and then forced her to sit back down while giving her another packet of crisp. Just what was happening but more importantly, who is this girl?' Nisha thought walking out the cabin. Sasha would not be happy' was her final thought looking through the glassed window into Maan's cabin while walking away.
Vicky was stunned seeing Nisha stand in his cabin asking him to meet his brother, but never the less he did as told and walked over to Maan's cabin only to see a smiling Geet wave at him through the glassed wall. He hadn't even made it to the door when Geet opened it, flung him in and jumped into a hug while he kicked the door close. For a moment, all his miseries flew away, being with Geet made him forget his trouble.
'Where were you, I waited for you and then slept here' she pointed to the sofa where Maan sat grinning at him to which Vicky smiled back. He was just about to say something but got stuck for words and then soon last night's events replayed, turning him cold to her response.
'Vicky I'm sorry' she apologised holding her ears seeing Vicky's sad eyes who also cautiously moved away releasing her hold from him
'Maan' she cried turning towards him as Vicky walked a few steps back before turning his back to her and her wielding eyes.
'Vicky she's sorry man, I'm sure Geet never meant it' Maan stepped forward turning Vicky by his shoulder
'Now stop being a grumpy old man and just forget it' Maan pressured signalling with his eyes for Geet to move forward
'I'm sorry' she apologised again holding softly onto Vicky's large arm that crossed over his chest in denial. It took a long silent minute, Geet still gingerly held onto his right hand while Maan firmly pressed onto his shoulders, an act he acknowledged that was on behalf of Geet.
'It's OK' he stated smiling a little before Geet engulfed him into another hug
Maan stood beside watching them hug, something in him again felt a little off. He didn't like it, he didn't like Geet hugging Vicky. 'But why?' he released the question for the first time but stopped at the sight of Geet mouthing a Thank you' to him. His brain replayed her smile savouring its essence as Vicky and Geet walked out his cabin hand in hand. He then went back to his desk with the thought of work, suddenly remembering the situation in the morning with Geet's exit.
'Call Adi and Sasha to my cabin, and I want the project files that are involved in this case' Maan ordered Nisha and then placed the receiver back in its home. This wasn't an out of character Maan, for he was always considerate towards others feeling. However this was a Maan, who somehow managed to suppress his frustration and anger, maybe it wasn't him but Geet who triggered the good fortune.
Maan's words of wisdom sprang to life causing Geet to appear much more confident than her morning self, she even tried to tug her hands out of Vicky's grip but when he tightened its hold she silently followed him but smiled at people who stopped to stare.
'Get to work' Vicky demanded seeing how the employees stared in confusion, realising that an unknown female might cause a stir but didn't want to intrude Maan's decisions. His brother would have to introduce Geet, in a form that was acceptable by both. With his order all went back to work, but the wandering eyes followed until Vicky pushed the door shut behind him finally ending the inquisitive stares.
'Vicky can I ask you something?'
'No Geet, you may not' he ended the conversation even before it started and then sat at his big oval shaped table with Geet warily following, a little shocked by his different demeanour. The next few minutes Geet looked around his cabin, which was very different yet both the brothers had one thing in common, bland and colourless. While Maan had splashes of greys and blacks, Vicky's was more neutral with pastels being prominent.
'Vicky can I ask you something now?' it wasn't even 3 minutes when Geet started again, to which Vicky counted up to ten knowing what her next reaction would be
'Talk to me' she moaned while he twirled around in his chair giving her the royal ignore.
'I'm going back to Maan, me and you are never going to be friends ever ever ever again' she finalised slamming her small hands to his table making a little sound while saying the last EVER, as if it was her ultimate decision
'Is that a promise?' he kidded turning with a full smile while she slugged to the couch with a crying face
'You're always doing that, I don't like it. You're not meant to' Geet snivelled showing him her pinkie finger
'Gosh Geet, it's great to have you back' he jested rubbing her hair with his palm, a warm fuzzy feeling enveloped both of them and the next minute they both burst into a loud laugh
'But I'm still upset' Geet ranted the minute both stopped
'Huh wasn't it me that was meant to be upset' Vicky stated with mock confusion making Geet smile in embarrassment
'I said I'm sorry, didn't I' she commanded walking off to his chair and then twirled around until she felt dizzy while he stood watching her childlike innocence. Who would have thought this woman was married? Never mind that, he wouldn't have never known she was the same woman he met at the night of the wedding. This was a very different Geet. She was open, innocent and absolutely childish.
'What are you staring at?' Geed asked relaxing in his chair, forcing him to sit on the opposite seat.
'Nothing, just that you've changed' he noted her expression changing within a second, causing a bout of regret to flow to the pit of his stomach making him shift his gaze in remorse. Somethings were meant to be unidentified.
'Vicky can I ask you something?' She asked one final time and then moved to the seat beside his, seeing how he made no effort to acknowledge her plea.
'Why do you think you have to leave Meera?' she questioned pulling the frame that was faced towards the glass table and then placed it in front on them with a watery smile, there he was with a beaming Meera on his lap. The good old days.
'You know what the difference between a woman and a man's love is?' Geet quizzed changing the topic seeing his depressed state to which he jolted back in surprise
'A woman loves from the heart and a man from his mind' she answered solemnly and then turned to Vicky with bemusement, seeing him grow in confusion
'For example Meera loves you and that's why she came here for you, even fought with me for you. Then there's you, you love her but willing to give her up for her happiness but don't you see Meera's happiness lies in you' Geet advised remembering Pammi's words, she had been young when she realised the equation between her big Bhabi's and Teji's relationship. Pammi would do anything to please Teji while he would only succumb if he thought it to be acceptable or worthwhile which was something Geet noticed ran in most relationships. Even Maan loved Sameera with his mind, had he truly loved her then she wouldn't be here, placed between two lovers as an unwanted wife.
'Stop loving from your mind Vicky, love her from the heart. Think of her, would she be happy without you' Geet pushed forward the frame of them two together looking like the perfect couple. Vicky stared at the picture running Geet's words over and over again, like a record. Was it right, was the mind incapable of loving, did it fall short in front of the heart?
'You know Meera's dad hated us two together, he wanted someone better because he thinks Motherless child's are disobedient and disloyal. Then Maan bhai fell for Sameera which he clearly disapproved of, when they moved to New Zealand he thought that was it, me and Meera would be pulled apart by the distance. But then we grew strong, I'm sure she had to fight to come back to India' Vicky shared nurturing his weak heart, maybe he was thinking a bit too hard. Meera and he fought through so many obstacles together then why was he tumbling under pressure now. Why couldn't they try one last time?
'Talk to her Vicky, she will understand after all she loves you' Geet added placing his hand on his heart trying to remove any last debris there may be, the heartbeat was to guide him to the truth.
'and Vicky it's not that I don't want to be in your family, it's more that the person I left my family for doesn't want me. He loves someone else however Meera loves you' she called in a soft whisper stopping his run which was heading for the door, wiping off a tear she turned to him seeing him look much like she did, ashamed.
'Now go' she cheered smiling with her tear filled eyes making him run out with a small smile, finally something made sense. Meera wasn't something to give up on rather something for the keeps.
Note: I don't know about most people, but I certainly believe that a man loves from the mind while a woman from her heart. I don't think it's a saying but something I realised through life and stories. Please correct me if I'm wrong? I'd like to be proven wrong J Also it is me or are these updates getting longer :o
