So all we know about Arjun's past is that both his parents are dead
And they both consecutively died once Vandana came to the Sharma house
But isn't that a bit convenient?

Why does vandana like Saanjh so much?
Saanjh is a emotional fool. She is someone who would blindly follow what vandana says. Vandana can control Saanjh and mold her to her own liking... vandana can easily fool Saanjh and make her believe something that isn't true
Why does vandana not like Maya?
Maya is intelligent. She will do what she thinks is right even if she hurts someone's feelings. Vandana can't control Maya and she knows that Maya is not a person to give in. Vandana can't fool Maya and Maya will try to do anything and everything to find out the real truth
Vandana ko Maya se khathra hai, Saanjh se nahi
Maya can reveal Vandana's true motives and characteristics to Arjun, which is something that Saanjh would never be able to do. That's why vandana is doing all these things to irk Maya, thinking that maybe Maya will leave Arjun herself. No sane mother would get a case reopened knowing that it's his sons wife. She is using the advantage that "Maya is bad luck" to justify her actions, which is pathetic in itself! I feel like she has other motives of separating Arjun and Maya
