5. Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif

This couple starred together in more films this year than any other on our list, three in fact! Their first film together was Humko Deewana Kar Gaye and, though maybe not a hit, it certainly showed that they had incredible chemistry on screen. Next came Namastey London, and again the pairing of the 2 set the screen on fire. Our reviewer said, "After Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, the chemistry between Akshay and Katrina is again sizzling!" This super-hit film cemented them in the hearts of many fans as a perfect jodi! Apparently directors were listening, because they again cast the two actors in Welcome, which released on December 21st. We cannot wait to see the two of them light up the screen in another film.
4. Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor

One of the biggest stories of the year was the break-up of these two stars right before the release of their new film, Jab We Met. How would the movie do? Would people believe the jodi of these two on screen even with the romantic changes between them? The answer was a resounding YES! The two were brilliant in Jab We Met: Kareena, the flighty one who lives life to the fullest, and sad, serious Shahid, switching personalities after the interval. Factor in the perfect script, and their performance as a couple became one of the best of the year. They played off of each other perfectly, and the film was truly a total romance (or, as a friend called it, a "total chick flick"). We hope that despite the fact that they are no longer a real life couple, we will see this shining "reel life" couple together again.
3. Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

This couple ranked number 4 on our 2006 list and, though better last year, their filmi jodi was considered only so-so. The two started dating in real life and everyone was watching to see how that would translate on screen. We got the answer in the film Guru, where we, for first time, saw real chemistry between them. The love between the two characters seemed true and the pairing in the film worked wonderfully, factors that made Guru one of the biggest hits of 2007! Their chemistry offscreen as well was love, and they married in April of this year.
2. Konkona Sen Sharma and Kunal Kapoor
This couple was very close to being our number 1 because of the magic they create in their movies. These two fine actors were seen two different films this year: Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and the incredible Aaja Nachle. However, since their romances were only a secondary story in both of these films, we decided that for this year they should be runner-up. One of the greatest things about this couple is that at first you think, "tall Kunal and little Konkona, a couple"? But then you see them together and you think, of course, they are love. You can see the connection between the two in every scene, especially in Aaja Nachle. Their chemistry is second to none (well second to number one on our list) but it is a joy to watch. We are hoping and wishing that next year we see them together in a quintessential romantic film centered around one of the best jodi's in Bollywood . If not next year, then soon, we think they will hit the top spot!
1. Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor
Our Number 1 jodi consists of two debut actors with a dream first film. Both from filmi families, the two grew up together and are fast friends which contributed to their connection on screen. The dream movie was Saawariya, one of the most highly anticipated films of 2007, directed by the genius Sanjay Lee Bhansali. He put the two through rigorous preparation for their roles, and, though the film did not set the box office on fire, their chemistry shone for all to see. Each time they were together on film you could literally feel their wanting, and in the end … well, in case you have not seen it, I will not give anything away. Not only were their performances brilliant, especially for a debut film, they also looked perfect together. The performance of the two was so superb that Amitabh Bachchan compared them to a Beethoven symphony, "Ranbir is the storm. Sonam is the soft breeze. Ranbir's presence is a storm, and Sonam is the graceful, calm, gentle breeze that flowed around him. The narrative is almost like a Beethoven symphony, where the thunderous sound of the orchestra is always followed by the soft thin flute - a symbolic interpretation of gentle desire and overpowering destiny." We know that both of these amazing actors are only going to continue to grow and hone their craft, and we will be eagerly anticipating a film that pairs our Jodi number 1 yet again!
All of our couples were exceptional in their varied roles and we applaud each and every one of their performances. We are sure we will see these bright lights of Bollywood on our lists again, perhaps together or perhaps in a new jodi! We will have to wait and watch to see whose jodi make our hearts go thump in 2008!
