From the show you would think the number one quality to be a idol is to have a fantastic sob story. Key points for future contestants
1) Struggle struggle and more struggle.
2) Some one should have died or left you. lesser the money better.
3) throw some fabulous non related career - something on daily contract rates ----

Ughhh!!!

Why cant we have some fantabulous singer , looking average to smoulderin ( since it is Indian idol after all ) and has a perfectly normal life of parents , school , music lessons and riyaz ?

Nothing against the idol contestants .. they are here to compete and sing. Few of those esp the ones eliminated have questionable musical chops.

Is it only me or does the idol contestants seem to all have a similar thread.

Absolutely.
I have already mentioned somewhere (here or on twitter) and have also read numerous people feel the same.
Many people have normal lives and are fantastic singers. But that doesn't get you trp's.
These shows are less about talent (though I'm not doubting anyone's talent here) but more about melodrama.
Even when there isn't melodrama they'll add some masala to contestants lives - manga had no drama but they had to milk the bahu angle and how she's away from the husband.
Rohit until now had no melodrama, but I foresee them milking the stammering angle.
Malavika has had a normal life but they're forcibly creating a love angle.
Hardeep has sung in restaurants - its his job like many of us have jobs, but Indian idol make a big deal out of that too.

All of this is such a put off and usually the poorest or the one who has struggled most wins and if not win the judges will bid the person such a melodramatic good bye that it's more than that of a winner.

Going by Indian idol logic - Mohit stands the most chance of winning followed by Khudabaksh.

Good question TM,

One has to have plenty of sob stories to win. I won't blame the channel alone, even audience are favouring such contestants.

Secondly, good looks helps.

Thirdly, the choice of songs, some audience feel disconnected when some contestants sings classical or songs not known to them... so one must be really careful when selecting songs

And finally comes the real talent, versatility, and music knowledge.

Just spot on! I have no hopes that the real talent will win. As the public voting starts now, one can expect the most favorable of public will survive and the rest will be eliminated. It's a talent contest, isn't it? sometimes I am forced to think whether it is a contest for popularity- as people get popular each week through their background stories, melodrama and the looks.

In my opinion, they have to change the format. Judges should choose the bottom three or four and ask the public to vote for them. This way you can expect the talent to win, atleast to an extent.

absolutely !!! The love story looks very forced! I really like the chutzpah of Revanth but as a singer so far he has been below par. But he is one the the most liked on the show !

YEs u r right!! But The audience is also required as this is a Idol where some personality is required. But most of this is passed on personality ...
Based on the way current stories are shaping up , in my opinion the popularity stakes are ...

Mohit
Revant
Malavika
khudabaksh

So so much this!

Bang on on the list of factors, NJ! The sob stories are getting on my nerves , but I have no doubt they're going to buy the contestants a lot of brownie points. Ditto on the looks (sadly and frustratingly) and choice of songs (this matters a lot. I know it does to me since I found myself skipping the performances wherein the songs were ones I didn't recognize). And the bummer is that one can't always choose the right song, there's no one perfect formula.

Chutty, ..wonderful idea! Judges choose the bottom three and the audience votes one of them out. That would be a fairer means of elimination, with at least some hope of real talent winning. Else I have no hope at all, especially for the South Indian contestants! 😕

Lizzie, TBH the south indian contestants have an advantage this time in terms of singing, but I only see see Revanth going through, no doubt he is talented but his looks and existing popularity will definitely help him.

I also wish the formula that chutty suggested will be used.

But then, if these contestants make one mistake, they will be gone and eliminated, where as the popular ones will stay in contest despite making multiple mistakes, thanks to audience's votes.

So it's more of a battle of popularity...I dont mind if the most popular one wins, but at least make sure the really talented ones stay till the finals...
