There will always be characters who have a larger fan base than another. And it's a natural aspect of fan crushing that you can't see how another can be "better" than the one you adore. Putting down another to show your idol in a better light is an unfortunate human instinct. Not that I'm condoning it in any way.</font>

The perceived sense of safety in a group then allows the mocking and disparagement to escalate. Over time, the sense of comfort grows. Quite often the ridicule is not deliberate, it feels like it's just for a laugh. And the cocoon of being one of many feeds that feeling. Not many stop and think of the implications, you're just seeking to outdo each other in the "witty" stakes.
