Bhopal: A ruling BJP leader here on Sunday announced a reward of Rs 10,000 per slap with a shoe on filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali for trying to distort history in his movie under production, Padmavati.

Akhilesh Khandelwal, chairman of Hosangabad municipal corporation in Madhya Pradesh, announced the bounty on his Facebook wall, which has got 178 likes within a few hours of posting.

The saffron youth leader has over 10,000 Facebook followers. He later told the media here that he has no regret for announcing a reward for slapping the Bollywood director with a show.

"They (such film personalities) are trying to distort our history to show us in poor light in public. We can no more remain silent. We consider it our responsibility to rein in such forces", he said.

Opposition Congress here took strong exception to the BJP leader's "provocative" post, demanding action against him for attempting to instigate an attack. "The saffron leaders have taken up the role of moral police," a Congress spokesman here said.

Congress leader backs Karni Sena, says no one has right to dent Padmavati's image

Sat, 28 Jan 2017-12:00pm , ANI

Backing the views of Rajput Karni Sena, who thrashed noted director Sanjay Leela Bhansali over his upcoming Indian period drama- Padmavati, Rajasthan Congress leader Pratap Singh on Saturday said that Queen Padmavati was not anyone's 'lover' as the filmmaker is portraying her in his upcoming flick, and was devoted to her husband.

"Padmavati was not lover of anyone. Bhansali cannot hurt the sentiments of the people by portraying the sacrifice of Padmavati in a wrong way. Padmavati has a history, she had fought for everyone. Chittaur is a pride of the nation," Congress leader Pratap Singh told ANI.

Asserting that the state tourism department has furnished wrong facts about Padmavati, Singh further said that it was the moral duty of the state government to look into the matter.

He also added no one has the right to present Padmavati's character in a wrong way and dent her image.

However, Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Singh Kataria said that flouting law to express anger is not called for, adding that probe would be initiated in the matter.

Protesting against Bhansali's upcoming Indian period drama Padmavati, the Karni Sena workers yesterday manhandled the former, alleging that the film has love scenes between Queen Padmini and ruler Alauddin Khilji, played by actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.

The protesters also demanded that Bhansali should delete such scenes in the film, if any.

Meanwhile, defending its action of vandalising the sets of 'Padmavati' and assaulting Bhansali, the Rajput Karni Sena warned that they will not let the history of their ancestors be tarnished, adding that they would defend their Rajput lineage from ignominy.

Twitter is also abuzz with the comments and reactions of various Bollywood celebrities, including Hrithik Roshan, Karan Johar, Sonam Kapoor, director Madhur Bhandarkar to support the 'Padmavati' director.

SLB: Why it's time to take action, writes Sarita A Tanwar

Sanjay Leela Bhansali
SARITA A TANWAR | Mon, 30 Jan 2017-06:30am , DNA

The video of Sanjay Leela Bhansali being attacked was disturbing for many reasons. It would perhaps have been less distressing to see some other director (Yes, I have some names in my head) being bullied like this. More so, because some of them might have punched the bullies and even cracked a skull or two. SLB stands for love, music, beauty, and romance. His world is soft and sensitive. He lives in a fairytale universe, on and offscreen. A recluse, he hardly parties, he never networks. He lives in the world of poetry and opera and is someone who probably has no idea how to deal with this sort of goondaism.

While most of us have it in us to deal with whatever googlies life throws at us, I am afraid that SLB doesn't. That he will be too affected by this unpleasantness and that the scars on the inside might never heal. We can't allow our artistes to be treated like this. While it is great to see the whole industry in support on Twitter, unfortunately, that won't make any difference. They need to do something constructive. Come out on the roads, do a dharna or be a silent march, sit in protest outside the homes and offices of powers that be... Or even go on a strike. In short, do something that is on every news channel for a few days, and captures the attention of the entire nation. Make some non-Twitter noise, because that might bring us closer to a solution. For decades, the film industry has been a soft target and it will continue to be that till the actors and makers come together and do something constructive about it.

Strangely, the Producers' Guild is silent on this. They brought everyone to the table to combat piracy; is this any less serious? One of their own has been attacked and in response, there is silence. Itna sannaata kyun hai, bhai? It even took the lead cast of Padmavati over 48 hours to react to the attack on their director. Because that's the world we live in. They were probably advised not to speak. When they were allowed to speak, they were most definitely advised to choose each word carefully. Why? Isn't it time to push back? Each of them has an army of millions of followers. That's power. Use it to make a difference. Not just to post selfies and dog videos.

I don't have all the facts on why SLB refused to file a police complaint, but that's setting a wrong precedent. They got away with creating trouble for Ashutosh Gowariker's film Jodhaa Akbar and flinging chappals and bottles at Ekta Kapoor during Jaipur Literary Festival, a few years ago, for her TV show Jodha Akbar. Now this. This will continue. And it will get worse. We are making movies of a blind man going on a rampage when the system fails him. Let's give the system the opportunity to do justice. And failing that, take action themselves.

Post 'Padmavati' setback, is Rajasthan a safe place to shoot?

Karni Sena activists on the set of 'Padmavati' at Jaigarh fort in Jaipur on Friday.

Following the goondagardi by the Rajput Karni Sena on the set of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmavati' in Jaipur, Kulmeet Makkar, CEO of The Film and Television Producers Guild of India Limited has raised safety concern over shooting in Rajasthan.

"The larger issue here is to question if it's safe to shoot films in Rajasthan anymore. Given that security of the film's unit is of utmost importance, such incidents will discourage filmmakers in India and abroad to shoot in that state in future," he said, adding that although Information and Broadcasting minister Venkaiah Naidu has condemned the incident, the industry needs to see concrete action being taken. "The Rajasthan government needs to reassure the film industry that they can safely shoot films there."

Members of the Karni Sena attacked the unit of 'Padmavati' at the Jaigarh Fort, accusing the filmmaker of distorting historical facts. Bhansali, who was assaulted by the goons, has already returned to Mumbai along with the crew. A unit hand tells hitlist, "We don't intend to resume shooting there after what happened to Sanjay sir."

Another source adds, "A number of lenses and cameras, among other equipment, were damaged in the attack. The production team is yet to determine the exact amount of losses incurred."

While Bhansali is yet to file a police complaint, no action has been taken against the assaulters. Ashwini Chaudhary of the Indian Film and Television Directors' Association says, "The president of Karni Sena has claimed he has full support of the safrron brigade. The I&B Minister of State, Rajyavardhan Rathore, is from Jaipur, but the silence of both the Centre and state government is worrying."

Losers who can't even understand. The movie is not even shot and look at the hullabaloo they create. So many rapes happen and none of these bloody politicians speak up. Work of fiction and jobless people come for fame.
