My outlook on this is that --- it's all about money for some, is their work for some, is a passion of some others, for some others - a timepass, for some others - an avenue to 'prove' themselves and make a name for their selves, and for some others - a combination of the aforementioned reasons... Anything cannot be black or white, for some people who basically work for money, find their passion while working too.
I'd say same about remix, remakes, sequels --- it can be many reasons - some people remake out of their own respect for the original, or, out of sentiment - nostalgia, some others because they have nothing better or original to produce, and some others so as to grab the audience - some a combination of reasons. You know, my uncle used to be obsessed with some songs so much that he used to make/write remixes of the songs as a hobby, and when you get success you would want to share your mix of a song right... it can be anything lol. Some remakes are made with honesty while some others in an effort to cover up for nothing better or to sell their song..
As I said, we can never point at one thing and strike something down as _______.
As for promotions, as I thought about it, I feel that the idea of promotions is to get into our brains... by going everywhere, by spreading their reach - the impact of which has backfired in some sections.. It's a mere marketing strategy. Why has it increased now is because of the increase in plethora of platforms where they can connect with their consumers - audience - TV/radio/ads on websites/even SMS/malls/colleges/train/etc.. aside of teasers/promos/audio/video releases on youtube.. And being media friendly, connecting with fans and all is also a strategy, although there are celebs who genuinely care for fans... like I said, nothing black or white.
The idea was to get into our brains by always being in our face all the time - which has it's drawbacks too. It has only made people averse to promos, some lose interest because there's no surprise factor and so on..
It's about money, success, name, fame, passion, competition..
As for brand, let's take SRK for example, he is a big brand, filmmakers do use him, he too uses his name, but, he is that passionate actor too when he does his job right? :-) Cannot deny that can we.
I see nothing wrong in people hankering after money, using strategies - as long as they do it by fair means... as for stupid music/promos.. well, that's just how much they are able to put out... maybe it's a phase?
