Some people believe that Bani did not fail the Maalgaadi task. They believe the task had two options and she picked the option of captaincy because she believed it was more important for her.
I disagree: I believe Bani completely failed the Maalgaadi task. Here is the reasoning.
What happens when a person gives up a task because he cannot do it
a) When a person gives up a task, he first tries it, then feels he cannot do it, then gives it up
b) The person has no intellectual reason for why giving up the task is better than continuing the task, but he is governed by a feeling (of fatigue/pain/etc) and accompanied by a rationalization (e.g., doing the task is not worthy, not doing the task is also good, etc.)
What happens when a person picks a different option in the task
c) The person outright knows which option is better for him and follows the rules of the task to get to his option as efficiently as possible, OR
d) The person receives first tries one option and then receives new information or realization that helps the person to change preference from one option to another. In this, the person can clearly tell which new information or new realization from existing information helped him change preference
Reasons why Bani failed
Bani failed because
- she displayed behavior (a). She stayed in maalgaadi for sometime (~1-2 hours and then gave it up)
- she displayed behavior (b). No new information came in that would have justified her changing the option. She later said immunity was important to her, but immunity was still important to her earlier when she stepped into the Maalgaadi. The only thing that changed between then and this point was her feelings after participating in the task for some time.
- She displays neither behavior (c) nor (d)
- She has a history of giving up tasks early or losing tasks early. E.g., bicycle task, rope task, etc.
- She has not showed any example of commitment to a task comparable to other participants
- The first things she said after giving up task was related to food, that if anything wanted anything to eat, she could provide them. This shows food was close to the top of her mind when she was getting out. Given she is so particular about food and not particular about tasks, it provides additional supporting information that she gave up task.
Constrasting behavior of Swami Om who did not fail, but picked the different option.
Swami Om showed the behavior of a person who picked the option of captaincy and did not fail the Malgaadi task because
- he exemplified point (c) completely.
- He did not show any behavior of (a) or (b).
- He knew righaway he wanted captaincy and he articulated clear reasons strongly why he was going for captaincy and not raising prize money.
- Judging by this behavior in the show upto that point, his articulated reason was consistent with his earlier behavior.
For the above reasons, I believe Bani failed the Malgaadi task. Her statement that she got out to pick the other option (captaincy, immunity) is a convenient rationalization.
