Secret #1:
Karan's movies are shallow. I know it, You know it and Karan knows it. The thing is- if I want something deep, realistic and meaningful, I will watch Satyajit Ray movie. Karan's movie are as deep as ditch water but any zoologist will tell you know this small body of water has richest culture and is full of life.
Secret #2:
Karan's movie have out worldly connection. It is no secret Karan likes to film his movies in different part of world. It could be Uk, US, France, Austaralia, India, Timabaktu - but his characters always belong to a single place called La-La-La land. Where else will you have women wearing more makeup than Ekta's serials, who are more coiffed (even at crack of dawn) than Delhi Doyennes and wear enough bling to rival someone named Lahiri.
Secret #3:
Karan dreams big. How else can he can get his leads to live a life in a palatial home on salary of an engineer. This house can give serious complex to rich crorepati mansion that were part of old Bollywood that housed most if not all heroines. Heroes were mostly poor and in need of rich inlaws. (Rescue fantasy 101). Karan has done away with this by giving nice houses to both his lead. (Fantasy 101).
Secret #4:
Karan is best fiction writer whose work rivals Dan Brown. Have you noticed how said palatial house (based in NY) houses - if not several -at least one Indian servant by name of Ramu chacha or some mausi (who has family's welfare in his/ her heart). Reality 101. Us is DIY country. Here you are expected to be your own maid, cook, dhobhi, plumber and carpenter. And if you are lucky- really lucky you will earn enough and find some one to work for you whose name will be Theresa, Maria, or some other nameless Mary Maid who will-
A> Work by hour/ half day/ once a week (if you are really lucky)
B> Will charge you a bomb if you ask her to do something that is not in her contract
C> Will charge you double if there is over time involved
D> Will give you stink eye if you don't finish pre-cleaning before she arrives
Secret #5:
It is no secret both Karan and Ekta like to show Indian culture- a lot. While Ekta loves giving us subjugating regressive soap opera, Karan knows how to mix his tradition with modern sensibilities. His characters are more progressive and have been known to take decision which may not align with traditional value.
Secret #6:
Difference between nostalgia and reality.
Nostalgia is looking for your old house on street where you lived. Reality is your father nudging and letting you know gently that you have been standing before the house for past 10 minutes and few changes have happened since you last visited.
Nostalgia is powerful filter that leaves behind joyful memory. It is that first breathe of air that you take when you visit your home country. Reality is wondering why you have trouble breathing, why there is so much pollution, smog, crowd, why you can't walk without getting hit by some vehicle, why traffic lights are never followed and why you have amoebic dysentery after eating paani puri. But I just ate 1 plate of paani puri from Thela. I always loved eating from that place.
Nostalgia mixed with reality is meeting someone whom you thought you had lost- a friend, relative, neighbor and finding them even more loveable. Bags brimming with stuff that you can find only in India. Kurti bought for 100 Rs that will go well with thousand dollars jeans, bag that is currently in and not affordable. Who cares if Berkin is spelled as Burkin. That is just poor spelling. Karan's movie are like dose of nostalgia laced with realism.
Secret #7:
It is no secret Karan has great taste in fashion. He gives females serious fashion goal that is achievable, desi and yet trendy. Is it surprising that females love watching his movie.
