Male stars have more differences than their female counterparts: Karan Johar

Filmmaker Karan Johar says contrary to popular perception, male stars have more differences among themselves than their female counterparts, and he admits making a two-hero film nowadays is a tough job.

"It's about two men in the film that is to think of. You can't afford two heroes and they also don't want to work with each other. It's a mess," Karan said during the panel discussion at the 18th Jio MAMI Mumbai International Film Festival.

This is a reason why Johar feels his impending collaboration with Rohit Shetty on the remake of Ram Lakhan might never happen.

When asked about Shetty's comment that Ram Lakhan remake can't be made as two heroes don't want to work with each together, Johar said, "You can't make (it) as two heroes will not work together. The role of Lakhan will be considered as a larger part and the character of Ram will be insecure of Lakhan."

"I would be like why get into this, either make Ram or Lakhan you can't make both'. It's not (the)age to make multi-starrer films or two-hero films. If (the) two are big stars then you land up doing MRI," he added.

Despite this opinion, Johar's filmography consists of many two-hero projects like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Na Ho, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Dostana, Student of the Year and most recently Kapoor & Sons.

The filmmaker is now set for his romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which stars Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Ranbir Kapoor.

Anushka, who along with Aishwarya accompanied Johar at the session, said questions about two actresses working together have always been there.

She revealed that she has only one scene with Aishwarya in the movie, which is set to release on October 28.

"It was one scene, it's a powerful scene. These questions are constant (of heroines not getting along)," Anushka said.

Recalling an incident, which happened while she was abroad for an award function, the 28-year-old actress said Aishwarya made her comfortable.

"She was too good to me during an award function abroad. I was called for a party in Mr Amitabh Bachchan's suite. I was 21 then and was scared. But she was so warm to me. She kept on asking me if I am okay or not. She didn't need to do that but she did," said Anushka.

While Aishwarya on her part feels it was her duty to make Anushka comfortable.

"She was shy, standing distant and uncertain. It was important to make her at ease and bring her in," Aishwarya, 42, said.

ironically it is a very good point Karan presented! These successful women who actually work together in movies are always asked this sexist question, while the men who do NOT work together at all as they r really not getting along even to contemplate it r given a free pass!

That's true. Will it stop people from asking actresses if their cat fight is over? Sadly no.

So Ram-Lakhan isn't happening coz of RS not able to work with any other actor?
To be honest, Ram's role was a second lead with Lakhan taking major chunk of role.

I like how Aish behaved with Anu as oppesed to how Kajol did not even acknowledge Kriti!
Aish is a class apart!

Males do movie together e.g. RS/Arjun, RS/SK, etc, but I dont think a film budget will be successful if 2 Khans say SRK and Salman take 50Cr each.

Aish is so sweet.
Comeing to the part of two actors shareing screen more difficult than Actresses. They all should hire good scriptwriters to get those actors into one movie instead of only blaming them. It all starts with the story. You rather make a movie of two woman falling in love with one man instead other ways.
And all of them will only consider to be part of it if its a big director be it actors or actresses.

He is saying this because he wants two stars in the film.

If he got two actors without the ego it would not be such a problem.

karan wants to make money.

Why doesn't he just launch some star kids and get their parents to foot the bill.

Getting two male stars in a film was never a problem before this. So many iconic films like anand and sholay were made with two huge stars.
It is simply because those days stars are secure in their own place and stand up to each other in acting.
Nowadays stars are hugely insecure to the point eating up supporting characters screen space sometimes even female leads.

Then, today these medicore stars have average acting and screen presence.

If the female leads are at different part of their career graph, they are accommodative. If not, they can be insecure. Madhuri had no problem with Aish in Devdas, Aish does not mind to have less screen time compared to Anu. They have a life beyond movie roles. But Madhuri would not have shared screen with Sri, Aish would not have done it with Rani.

With men, it is the opposite. They get along with a contemporary, but find it hard to share less screen time with a junior. Salman might have taken reduced screen time with Sharukh, but he would not do that with Bir/Veer now. (When he did cameo, Bir was not a star). Similarly, Anil Kapoor had no problem with Jackey, but with Sharukh (when Sharukh was new).

Women have insecurity when they are at peak. Men get it, when they are coming down (as if their empire is collapsing).
