Manik was in his car with Nandini, on his way to drop her, when he got a call from Ranbir.
"Kya be tu to out of sight, out of mind ho gaya...land karne ke bad se ek phone bhi nahi? Aur yahan hum kitne pareshan ho rahe the.."
"Yeh suddenly tujhe kya hogaya hai, why are you sounding like an over dramatic- over possessive girlfriend? Abhi I am coming back na tomorrow... wo jaldi mein I forgot to text you." Manik turned to Nandini, who was pouting and rolling her eyes at him.
"Ho..Ho.. Ho.. Seedhe seedhe bol na, hawaon mein, fizaon mein, har disha mein tujhe sirf Nandini Murthy hi dikh rahi hai. Waise kuch to baat hai us larki mein ... ek din mein devdas se Romeo bana diya, kahan tu maun vrat pe tha, aur idhar madam ne aisi dor kheenchi ki tu swayam Mumbai pahunch gaya?"
"What?? What the heck has gotten into you, tu kabse yeh pure hindi mein mythological types dialogues marne laga? I tell you man, stay away from Madhubala. She is doing some black magic on your tongue." On either side of the line, the friends broke into peals of laughter. And watching Manik laugh without a care in the world, brought a smile to Nandini's face as well. His friends were his lifeline. If only they realized their own worth in his life. If only they settled their scores and got back as thick as before.
"Acha? Waise madam se guftagoo ho gayi ya abhi bhi chal rahi hai..?" Ranbir threw in yet another line in pure hindi.
"Seriously Ranbir????? Guftagoo?? Waise did you call me at 4 am to do this stupid chit chat?"
Even though, Manik had given them no reasons for leaving Dehradun and the last thing they knew, was that Manik and Nandini were having a fight, Ranbir could so easily read through his urgency. He understood, fight or no fight, Manik was craving to meet Nandini, that there could be no reason bigger than this to make him travel all the way to Mumbai, just for a few hours. Manik blushed as he realized how well Ranbir knew him already.
"Nahi" Finally Ranbir got down to the real matter, assuming a serious tone." I actually called to tell you two things..one ki you don't need to come back. We will handle it here. And secondly, to warn you that Nandini's phone is being tapped."
"Tapped? What do you mean?" Was he hearing it right? Tapped? Did Ranbir say tapped? Nandini, sitting next to him, was alerted at this sudden shift in Manik's voice. Who was tapping what? She wondered.
"Exactly what you heard. I don't know how, but we found voice clips and chats from Nandini's phone, saved in his cloud storage. May be he has hacked into her Google account too. I donno how, but he has somehow messed up with her phone. We can't take this guy lightly " What kind of a creep taps his supposed fiancee's phone. Neel was not just out rightly disgusting, but he was dangerously disturbing too...deranged and psychotic."Matlab uski ma mil gayi to I would do her charan sparsh and ask, how did she manufacture a piece like that?"
Manik, numb from the revelation, couldn't react for a few minutes. Then, replaying all their telephonic conversations he had had with Nandini over the last couple of weeks, he asked "is it just phone calls or all Social Network convos I mean FB and whatsApp?" Nandini, still oblivious to the entire truth, was growing impatient. Would someone just tell her what on earth was happening.
"Good question. Dekh voice files are in Mp3 format so its difficult to make out the source but I am fairly sure that data transferred through Whatsapp is encrypted so that can't be recorded."
"Sorry Ranbir, I donno how to thank you... I mean I dragged you along and then I left on a whim, leaving you guys there, making you stay up all night." Manik was just as apologetic as he sounded
"Agar meri jagah Cabir hota, would you still have said sorry?"
Manik grew silent, pondering over the precarious question. If he said 'yes', Ranbir would feel as though he was and always will be second to Cabir. If Manik said 'No', he would be lying. He would have never thanked or apologized to Cabir, for between the five of them, they had an unspoken rule ; if one went down, the others would step in and hold the fort.
Ranbir sensed the unease in Manik's silence, & thought it best to divert the conversation. "Manik we somehow gotta mislead Neel, he shouldn't get the slightest clue that we are planning to expose him."
But inside, it hurt him badly. In the short time they had spent together, he had come to like Manik, or rather love him and not just for being his brothers friend. But was this feeling mutual? Was he Ranbir to him? Or would he always remain Cabir's twin? Not that he ever felt Manik discriminate. In fact, quite on the contrary, whenever they were together, Manik treated him like a long lost friend, but then suddenly a moment like this would come along and throw Manik completely off guard. It were these untimely, unintentional apologies, these awkward silences that made Ranbir feel like he was still an outsider. Friendships take years to build and he couldn't possibly have it in weeks or months. But did he have it in him to stick through that long. He had already come too far for these people, how much more was he willing to go?
"Yeah bro." Manik dejectedly agreed.
"Chal I gotta get some sleep now. You take care." And Ranbir disconnected the call.
Manik sat still for a while, lost in thoughts. On one hand was this jerk, whose psychotic deeds were beginning to scare him now. If he could tap Nandini's phone, if he could cause that freaking accident, he could do anything. And on the other hand were his friends, all scattered and torn apart. And in the midst of all this, the only people religiously guarding him were Ranbir and Navya - the two people he had least expectations from.
He immediately dialed back Ranbir's number, who was surprised to see Manik's name pop up on his cell, merely minutes after they had spoken at length.
"Listen bro.." Without bothering about or the customary 'Hi's' or 'hellos', Manik jumped straight to the point. "I just wanted to say sorry for the last time."
Ranbir was confused. 'Sorry again? For what?' he thought.
"Aage se tujhe kabhi sorry/thank you nahi bolunga kameene. Chal give me a virtual hug." Ranbir hadn't seen it coming, not now, not this way. No big lectures, no justifications...in just half a sentence, Manik had cleared the fog clogging his heart and let him know that from now on, they would be the closest of friends. He felt dizzy with happiness, almost choking with a sudden surge of emotions. This, he knew was going to be the beginning of a lifelong friendship. And only someone like him, who had been a loner all his life knew the true worth of it . He could see his brother raising a tequila toast to them from heaven/hell.
"Chal ab bas kar, rulayega kya?"
********
Nandini's head was spinning faster than the rotational speed of the earth. After Manik had told her about her phone being tapped, together they had scrutinized her phone and singled out the App that was recording all her phone conversations. She hadn't installed it, they both knew for sure. Then who? And how? She rolled back the wheel of time, replaying each and every incident till it stopped at the day she had bought the phone. She remembered how Neel had broken her phone and how the shopkeeper had taken her gmail id.
"Bloody bas***d!!!" Nandini held her head between her hands. So this is why he had come that day, to spy on her. And how easily, she had stepped in his trap. And all this while, he must have heard every single conversation that she had had with Manik, even the most private ones. She cringed with shame and fear.
But this wasn't the time for such emotional outbursts. They opened the google drive on her phone, where all the recorded conversations were saved and played each one of them to figure out just how much information had been leaked to Neel by now. After they had gone through all the files, Nandini took a deep breath in relief, thanking her stars. This time, luck had been on their side.
Because for the major part of the last two weeks, they had been physically together in the hospital and then in panchgani , there had been very few phone calls between them. And the saving grace was that none of the calls had any mention about Manik regaining his memory, or their plans to upset Neel. Better still, they had fought in the last two calls. That would have pleased Neel, given him the false impression that they were still fighting it out.
An brilliant idea popped up in Manik's head. How to beat Neel Dixit at his own game. Neel thought, he was smart enough to tap Nandini's phone? Now Manik will make sure his plan boomeranged on him. When you dig graves for others in darkness, chances are, that you yourself will stumble in it.
He explained to her in detail, what to do next. It seemed so funny to her that sitting face to face with Manik, in HIS car, they would talk to each other over phone and play-act as if they were having a nasty fight. They would pretend to break up. Mistaking this for real, Neel would jump around in joy for this is what he had longed for, for the longest time, hadn't he? And this happiness would keep his mind off from any further plotting and buy sufficient time for Manik to execute his master plan of exposing him.
Nandini , beaming with pride, imagined raining kicks on Neel. Finally her wish was being granted and despite Manik not wanting it, he had to include her in the kill Neel mission.
"Hello" she said.
"Are you nuts, why did you call up this late?" Manik made up a groggy voice as if her call had woken him from sleep.
"To kya karun, you haven't called me in 20 hours. What's going on Manik? Why are you not talking to me?" They had to cover their microphone by turn while the other spoke. Otherwise their plan would fall flat on its nose as Neel would easily make out everything.
"I am busy Nandini, and I am in Delhi." Delhi??? While he was right before her eyes in Mumbai? This cracked up Nandini. She pressed her palm tightly over her mouth to stop a chuckle from escaping. Manik on the other hand was damn serious and rolled his eyes at her, gesturing her to get serious and concentrate on the mock fight. "Why can't you just keep to yourself, why do you bug me all the time?"
"Don't you like my calling you, Manik?"
"Tum to Einstein nikli miss Murthy, ab tak tumhe samajh mein nahi aya that your calls disturb me, that I am AVOIDING you INTENTIONALLY."
"But I love you Manik, always have, always will." Her voice was softening. They were both looking into each other's eyes. Their eyes speaking a language contrary to their lips.
"What do you mean by 'ALWAYS' , Nandini? You hardly know me for a couple of months? It was just a passing phase Nandini." Manik intentionally mentioned the 'couple-of-months' thing. He wanted Neel to believe that he still didn't remember anything from the past.
"But Manik, you said you love me too, you promised me that we are in this together, that you will not let Neel come close to me."
"I am tired Nandini, tired of this Neel and the baggage you carry. I was just looking for a happy go lucky, no string attached relationship but your life is a full on drama. And I don't think I can handle it. I feel claustrophobic Nandini. Its best that we moved on our separate ways." Manik saw Nandini's face tighten into knot. She was no more smiling, her eyes were becoming glassy. He touched her cheeks gently to remind her that they were just enacting it.
"You don't love me then?" She asked with such innocence that for a second Manik felt like cutting the call and pulling her in a bone crushing hug.
"Love..." he took a pause, clearing his throat and trying to cheer her up with his eyes "Love is a big word...I don't know what it means. 'Attraction' is what I felt for you. You know, I am always surrounded by these high maintenance, dolled up girls and you were a welcome break. You are real and ordinary, and I liked it. But that's about it. If you thought this was going to last for life, with family and all involved, I am sorry, you read it all wrong."
Her eyes were welling up and a lone fat tear tumbled out of her left eye and sat cozily on her cheek. Why was she taking it seriously? Why was she getting so deep into it? Manik cursed himself for this idea. He should have kept her out of this. He should have known, she was too sensitive, to even pretend that they were drifting apart. And it made him realize once more just how much she loved him and how hard it must have been for her to live aprt from him all these years.
"So its all over?" her voice was quivering. "Whatever we had is over? Just like that?" and she started sobbing like a fool "Are you walking out, right now?"
"Honestly, I never took it so seriously, it was just another..."Even Manik was finding it difficult to continue "another fling, another phase Nandini. After three years in Denmark, it was a new country, new people... you are making me feel guilty Nandini. Listen I wish you all the best in life and because you have been such a sweetheart, I would love to be your friend but please don't drag me in this. Let me make it clear for once and for all, that I am not your BOYFRIEND!"
"But what will happen to me?"
"Nandini stop it ok? Your life, your problems, I have had enough" He raised his voice momentarily before disconnecting the call midway.
He opened his side of the door and dragged Nandini out of the car. By then, she was already in tears. He drew her to his chest, wrapping both his arms around her, and then like consoling a little child, he whispered in her ears "Shhh.. Why do you have to cry all the time Nandini? You know I love you, you know I am not going to leave you come what may, you know I will dodge death to be with you, then why do you cry?"
She didn't have the right words to reply to him. Yes, she knew all of that and more and yet she felt weak on her knees even to imagine a life without him. It broke her, it crumbled her like a stale pie, even when it was a joke or a lie. She would never be able to justify or express what he meant to her. She would never be able to put logic in her feelings for him. He wasn't a playboy like thousands of other men of his age. He loved her with a purity and sincerity that was rare, he loved her like a girl and protected her like a child, he respected her like a woman and they could even get silly like besties. Life with him was so beautiful that she didn't even want to IMAGINE it without him. Why weren't they already married?
He wiped her tears and assured her with a pat on her back & a kiss on her forehead . "Its 4.20 Nandini, go home and I will send you a new phone tomorrow morning. And don't worry about Neel."
He continued to hold her, as she refused to let go of him, nudging her face against the fabric of his shirt in defiance. Her hands were firmly wrapped around him.
He kissed her once more, on her cheeks.

Sorry for the delay. I was unwell and had gone out of town. My schedule is so packed that an absence of three days caused a lot of backlogs and it took some time to clear them out. Thank you for all your heart warming messages in the last chapter. I am sorry i couldn't reply and kind of disappeared.
Chapter 104
It was freezing cold outside and Ranbir's face, especially his ears had gone numb. He quickly pulled the hoodie over his head, and tucking his cold hands inside the front pockets, turned around to walk back up to the house.
Inside, Nishant and girls were sleeping and to avoid waking them up, Ranbir had sneaked out to call Manik.
But as he took the very first step, he noticed a darkish thing hunched over on the bench in the back yard. In the darkness, it looked like a sack, or like a dog curled up on the bench, but for all he knew, it could be anything or anyone. Frightened out of his wits, Ranbir fastened his pace, trying to flee the place before that something or someone attacked him. But as luck would have it, as he was about to unlock the door knob, he felt a solid tap on his shoulder. Choking with fear, Ranbir started weighing his options. Should he scream for help at the top of his voice, waking up every living creature within a diameter of a 1 mile or should he be a man, turn around and punch the man/animal/ghost in its face. Thankfully, before he could do either, a shrill female voice hit his eardrums.
"Chor! Chor!" he heard, and even before he could turn around and tell her he wasn't a thief, he felt his collar being pulled and then a mighty blow landed on his jaw, desensitizing the entire left side of his face and he fell flat on the ground under its impact.
"Chori karta hai, kameene?" she was about to hit him again when he revolted in desperation, "Navya are you Nuts??? Its me Ranbir."
"Ranbir, tum!!!!??!!! Tum itni raat ko yahan kya kar rahe ho? Aur yeh sar kyun dhaka hua hai?"
Unable to decide, whether the stars were in the sky or in his head, Ranbir mustered all his strength to sit up. His teeth were still tattering under the impact of the third degree assault. He was so angry at Navya, he could almost strangulate her. "EXCUSE ME!!!! May I know what are you doing here like a bhatakti atma?"
"Wo hume neend nahi aa rahi thi." Biting her lips, she quickly knelt down and began to inspect the extent of damage on Ranbir's face, ."Waise tumhe zyada chot to nahi aayi? Sorry haan, mujhe laga koi chor hai. Ab mujhe kaise pata hoga ki itni rat ko tum choron ki tarah ghar ke andar ghus rahe hoge"
"Madhubala, can you ever be a little less dramatic? Matlab janam ke time pe agreement sign karke aayi thi kya, ki jahan jaogi, ek naya trouble create karogi? Agar I lose a single teeth because of your punch na, I swear, I will drag you to court." Lame - Ranbir realized, perhaps the lamest joke he had produced in a whole week. He was expecting Navya to lash back at him for the same, but the only word that reached his ears was a meek 'Sorry'.
Navya quietly extended her arm and helped him stand back on his feet. Perplexed, Ranbir asked, rubbing his still sore jaw "Yeh tumhe kya hogaya, why are you replying like a punctured balloon?"
"Kuch nahi, jao jake so jao, bohot raat ho gayi hai"
"Aur tum??"
"Bola na, neend nahi aa rahi hai."
Ranbir touched Navya's forehead with two fingers. "nahi, matlab bukhar to nahi hai, fir kya pagalpan ka daura para hai ? You will stay here in this cold?" He started dragging her inside by her hand.
Navya jerked her hands from his hold with kind of raw defiance that Ranbir had never seen in her. Why was she behaving so out of character? Keeping his funny side aside, Ranbir asked seriously. "Kya baat hai Navya? Kuch hua hai kya?"
She kept mum, but the her face gradually softened, as her lips drew in a sad grin.
Excusing himself, Ranbir ran inside to grab a thick quilt. If they had to spend the rest of the night outside, he might as well cover up. He made her sit on the bench while settling next to her, and wrapped the quilt around themselves. "Ab bolo, kya hua?"
She would still not say anything and gently leaned against Ranbir's shoulder, as her eyes began to flood.
He had never seen her like this, dispirited and lifeless. How would he comfort her? The only way known to him was humour and that was clearly not working today. Navya, to be honest had been the easiest to talk to. She wasn't typically girlish, but simple, unassuming and funny. But the Navya, he was lending his shoulders to today, was just a woman and Ranbir felt utterly under-equipped talking to her for he had never had a serious man-woman conversation ever.
She wasn't going to say anything, Ranbit figured out. He would have to get her to talk. "Acha ye batao, ki why did you come with us? Sirf Nandini ke liye ya you have someone in Delhi? Last time also we met in Delhi."
The mention of Delhi, saddened her more. "I miss Abir" she finally confessed.
"Abir kaun?"
"Mera beta"
"Use to tumne.. You have given him up for adoption na?"
"Hmm" she sighed. "Wo...I mean uske parents Delhi mein rehte hain"
Ranbir didn't know what to add. Should he console her, or should he just keep quiet and let her speak. This was a sensitive matter and he didn't want to blurt out anything, intentionally or otherwise, that could potentially hurt her.
"Har 2- 4 mahine mein I come to Delhi and chup chup ke dekhti hun Abir ko. Pata hai wo abhi 3.5 saal ka hogaya hai, aur itna cute hai ki doll ki tarah lagta hai"
"Uske parents..don't they take good care of him?" Ranbir hesitatingly asked.
"Nahi nahi, bohot khayal rakhte hain uska, unki apni ek beti hai 7 years ki, fir bhi they wanted to adopt Abir and usko khub pyaar karte hain." She said excitedly.
"So then that's good right, then why do you worry so much. He is getting the kind of upbringing jo shayad tumne uske liye socha hoga."
After a long silence, Navya uttered softly "Ma ka dil hai na, bhoolna chahoon bhi to reh reh ke uski yaad ati hai "
"Do you regret giving him up for adoption?"
"hmm shayad...pata nahi"
Ranbir adjusted the quilt, tucking in the loose ends that had slipped down Navya's shoulders.
"Kabhi kabhi life hamein options nahi deti, bas jo karna hota hai, so karna hota hai. Jab Abir is duniya mein aya to hum mushkil se 20 ke honge. Khud ko samhalte ya usko. Pata hai Ranbir, hum jahan se aye hain na, matlab patna se, wahan ghar ke mard bahar jake paisa kamate hain, aur ghar ki aurat bacche samhalti hain. Mumbai mein humein akele hi Abir ke papa aur uski ma, dono roles nibhane the, fir us chote se bacche ke liye waqt kahan se late. Kaise bara hota wo? Isiliye dil pe patthar rakhkar uske de diya aur ab tak us dard se nikal hi nahi paye. Apne hi bacche ko apne se dur bara hote dekhne ka dard kya hota hai, yeh hum lafzon mein zaahir nahi kar sakte, bas mefsoos kar sakte hain aur us dard mein har din thora aur mar sakte hain"
(Sometimes, life doesn't give us options. What's to be done, has to be done. When Abir was born, I was hardly 20. I was too young to handle myself, forget Abir. You know Ranbir, the place where I belong to, Patna, that place has a patriarchal society. There men earn and women raise kids. In mumbai, I was all by myself. I had to be both his father and mother. And in between earning a living and running a house, where did I have the time to raise a child. I didn't want him to grow up through a love-less childhood, that's why, I had to give him away. But sadly, I haven't yet recovered from that pain and I don't think I ever will. The pain of seeing someone else raise your child can't be expressed in words, it can only be felt like I feel every day and die a little more)
'The prettiest smiles hide the deepest wounds' Ranbir remembered his favourite lines from way back in school.
"I know its useless to discuss these things now, but tum kisi ke sath, I mean why didn't you get into a relationship after that?"
Navya laughed out loud and then fell quiet again "Duniya mein Manik jaise larke kam hote hain aur harshad jaise zyada. Ek pregnant larki ka sath kaun nibhata. Infact tab hi kyun, aaj bhi jabtak logon ko mere past ka pata nahi chalta, wo ache se baat karte hain, interest bhi dikhate hain, par ekbar trust karke sab bata diya to aise bhagte hain ki fir unki shakal nahi dikhti... bohot complicated hai life."
(The world has fewer Maniks and an abundance of people like Harshad. Who do you think would have loved a pregnant girl? Even today, the moment people learn about my past, they start avoiding me like plague..life is complicated.)
"Kuch bhi Navya? Kaun si century mein rehti ho tum. Who cares about these things in today's time, duniya kitn aage bar gayi hai. We like people for who they are, we don't judge them for their past."
"I wish Ranbir, I wish ki tumne jo bhi kaha, wahi sach hota, par wo sach nahi hai. Is desh mein, is sehar mein, aaj bhi larki ko agni pariksha deni parti hai. Humne bohot tarakki kar li, bari degrees, mehenge kapde, achi naukriyan, par fir bhi dil chote hi reh gaye. Khair choro, hum is bare mein baat hi kyun kar rahe hain?"
(I wish, you were right. But the truth remains that even today, a girl has to walk through fire to prove her purity. We have come far, in terms of the jobs we do, the clothes we wear, the degrees we hold, but our hearts have remained just as constricted. But anyways, why the hell are we even discussing this?)
"ok, lets not discuss this. But why are you punishing yourself like this? Your son is legally no more your son. He is happy wherever he is and you know that. That is his family now, those people are his parents, and that's what he would grow up knowing. Then why are you subjecting yourself to this torture, stalking him from a distance? This is obsession navya and the only person who will be hurt from all this is you."
"Obsession kaise bol sakte ho tum Ranbir?" Her increasing tone indicated that she was hurt and angry. May be he had used a wrong word, may be he shouldn't have been this blunt, but this had to be told in one way or the other. "Yeh koi break up nahi hai ranbir that I am obsessed with my ex. Use to main kab ka bhula chuki hun. Who khoon hai mera. Mera baccha hai wo..obsession nahi hai. Aur yeh rishta kabhi nahi tut sakta."
"All I know is you have to let go Navya, for Abir and for yourself. You are still a young woman, you have a great life ahead, you are beautiful and lively and caring...you have all the right in the world to have a happy life. Don't deprive yourself like this. Don't live in the past. Your son is happy, and you should be happy too."
The first rays of the sun began permeating through the dark sky, diluting the black into a lucid indigo. Somewhere in the distance, they heard the croaking of chickens.
"Ranbir, hume neend aa rahi hai, andar chalein?" navya was feeling tired from all the arguing, but having spoken out her mind to someone made her feel light too, and after a long day and a longer night, sleep was finally catching up with her.
"Hmm..." Ranbir took a deep breath, and got up from the bench "But Navya, duniya mein sirf Manik aur Harshad type ke log nahi hote."
Navya, who was a little ahead of Ranbir turned back and replied with a smile. "janti hun, kuch Cabir ki tarah hote hain, jo zimmedari to uthate hain, par unki majboori hoti hai ki who pyaar nahi kar sakte...aur kuch tumhari tarah hote hain, jo pyaar ke naan se hi dur bhagte hain...waise tumhare daant thik hain ki court tak jana parega"
(I know, some are like Cabir, who are willing to take up responcibility but unfortunately they can't commit to love and then some are like you, who get scared even at the mention of 'Love'. B the way, how are you now? All your teeth in place or are you dragging e to court?)
"Thank God, you are sounding like yourself again."
"Like what?"
"Like patna ki subah wali masala chai...aur uske saath garma garam litti chokha"
No one had ever described her with the colours of her own land. Navya blushed a little as happy memories from her childhood rose in her blood. Matching steps and bidding the lonely night a farewell, the friends stepped inside.

A/N: Just to let you know, the story seems to be inching towards an end, with the end of Neel and Nandini wanting to marry Manik. But that's not happening. the story will have lots of twists ahead and dont worry Manik and nandini are not going to pulled apart. Thought I should let you know to clear the doubts.
