We've seen you only in Balaji serials so far. Any specific reason?
Not really. It's just that I'm concentrating on only one serial right now, Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi that comes on air five days a week. It's enough work to keep me occupied.
We hear that you will soon be appearing in an episode of CID Special Bureau in which you're the target of a female don, Deepshikha. That sounds exciting?
(Grouchily) Who tells you such stories? I'm not coming on any episode of CID.
Last year you walked away with the Best Beta trophy at the Star Parivar Award. This year Karan beat you to it. Were you upset?
(Shortly) Not at all.
Is Gautam Virani anything like the real Sumeet Sachdev?
(Thoughtfully) Well, Gautam is a very aggressive guy. He is very short- tempered and reacts quickly and impulsively to situations and people. He takes decisions without thinking at times. In comparison Sumeet is pretty cool..chilled out. However, neither Sumeet nor Gautam are bad guys really. The only difference, I guess, is that I'm less prone to jump to conclusions and not quite so impulsive.

(Cutting in) Girls are crazy about Gautam. (Smiling) I think they like guys with a short fuse. I don't think they much care for a controlled guy like Sumeet. But no sweat. I like both guys.
Is your gelled-back hair a style statement like Ansh's trailing locks and glares?
My hair is thick and long. Gel keeps it in control.
Most TV actors crib about their heavy schedule that keeps them from spending time with their loved ones. Does your family voice similar compliants?
Well, work is pretty hectic these days. My family is based in Delhi. I have not met them in two years. (With a wry grin) Now they've got used to my prolonged absence from their lives and have stopped grousing. Fortunately, I've found myself another family in the Virani parivar. It's a big joint family and everyone's very nice.
Is it difficult to call Smriti Irani mom given the fact that she's your age?
(Chuckling) Smriti is five days younger to me. And no, I have no problems calling her mom.
Smriti's taken to politics in a big way. Do you have similar aspiriations?
No, I'm not into rajniti. I'm a music lover. I don't even know the spelling of politics.
Will Kyunkii... go through another generation leap soon with you becoming an elderly father?
(Cagely) I believe something along the lines is expected to happen soon.
At one point people were calling you the small screen's Hrithik Roshan. You must have got a lot of film offers since you became a regular on Kyunkii.... Haven't you ever thought of switching over to movies like Amarr Upadhyay who became a household name as Mihir in the same serial?
Well yes, I did get a lot of offers but none of them were anything to write home about. So the decision to choose between film and television hasn't cropped up yet. (Wistfully) I'd love to do a film on a musician's life. In fact, if I were offered such a role I wouldn't even mind doing a crash-course in music. I love music and doing a role like this would be a dream come true.
You mean a film like Jhankar Beats?
(Looking puzzled) I haven't seen that film. Was it good?
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
(After a thoughtful pause) That's a difficult question to answer. I don't think so far ahead. I want to be happy...I want to be known as a good person all my life...
The rumour is that after experimenting with several relationships you have found a perfect soul mate in your reel-life wife Damini aka Reva Babbar. True?
(Snapping) False. I don't know who spreads such rumours.
So tell us about your dream girl?
(Curtly) I don't have time to think about all this. Right now I'm completely focused on my work. Marriage is far from my mind at the moment. It's only in Kyunki... that I end up taking the saat pheras...again and again and again. But even that seems to be behind me now...
