Dev Dixit is a complicated guy. He struggled a lot, had to ask and receive a lot as a stepping stone to his success.. as did his mother.
Let me tell you a story:

My grandfather was really poor. He could barely make ends meet and he had 3 sons to raise. He saw no opportunity for them so one day he took a loan and packed his family up and emigrated to another country.

It was really hard. His wife was angry because she was taken far away from her relatives. They had to all stay in a tiny room because that was all he could afford. And they worked and worked for pennies.

His older son went to work in the docks and would be gone for weeks. His middle son would sell peanuts and snacks made at home in front of a local cinema. Everyday the coins are counted for expenses and savings.

My father was the only one they sent to school. And teachers saw his potential and made him jump class as he was studying well. He finished his school leaving exam so well he won a community scholarship to study abroad.

He worked as he studied. Scholarship money was sent for his family to make ends meet. Brothers would send him fees and necessities as they too had wives and small kids. The wives toiled for their daily household income and know exactly how much was allocated to him.

When he got his degree and was due to return, a big disagreement broke at home. My father had sent a large sum of money back and the 2 bahus wanted to know who gets how much. Ugly words were exchanged and each vocally expressed how much they sacrificed for my father's studies.

It became so ugly that every single thing my father owned was split into two (even a bicycle for parts) one Bahu marched out with her family to her own house. Big drama.

My father came back to a heartbroken mother and angry elder brother and wife. He was forced to take their side and stay with them because , well he was Big brother who had taken charge after Grandfather died.

My father got married and every aunt of mine was jealous and would claim importance from my father over the stupidest things. If my father bought my mother a dress, the same thing must be bought for the niece (of equivalent age as my mother). Don't ask for logic as it does not apply.

My mother would ask for something, and her (SIL) in laws would be the one to approve if she deserves it. And duplicate must be bought for them too. They hold my father like a golden goose, who'd pay all the bills for them. He even paid for his nephews and nieces to study in Uni too and now their grandkids.

My father's 3 daughters are all professionals with their own income. He kept savings separately for us in savings that he gave us upon graduation. But his money is for his family, a fact that still bothers my mother.

For my father, it is simple. He wouldn't be here if not for his brother and his wife. He owes them his life. He'd do anything for them. He won't even discuss it. The grandkids come and claim things without deserving and he just gives and gives. It's an unquenchable debt.

Dev and his mother have this debt with Mamaji. Mamaji does not collect but GKB and Vicky have no qualms in doing so. They feel entitled and just take and ask for more. Only Mamaji has the grace to say thank you.

Dev was right. It's not about Sonakshi at all. She shouldn't get involved at all. He just got a bad scolding from his mother and his head is on fire. He was humiliated as a Businessman by his own mother, and bullied into giving a newbie a job he doesnt deserve.

He needed some time alone. Sona can afford him that. Husbands aren't always gentlemanly and courteous. You would be more valuable if you stood by and didn't add stress onto him at a difficult time.

He had to beg Vicky to take the job too. Even willing to absorb the losses and cover up for his inadequacy. For Mamaji.

Support Dev, Sonakshi. Don't be another obstacle of stress for him. Dont egg him on. Just stay out of it for now. Please. For the sake of your marriage. Dont make Dev stop discussing anything with you by issuing challenges.

Wow what a story. And such a true reflection. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I know exactly what your father would feel. Dev is exactly like that. When it comes to family sona has what Dev never did. Hopefully will. Unconditional support.

Everybody is expecting something or the other from Dev and what will remain is a broken man. He can fight the world but fighting his own self , his guilt he will never win.

Why Dev appointed Vicky. Just because. And that is the only possible answer.

Just because...

That was a very heart touching story Annz.
Kudos to your dad for being such a brave heart. I think its a deep rooted feeling of gratitude that is bound to defy all logic. And people stay indebted throughout their lives. It's the fault of such relatives who see your dad as a cash-cow.

As for our serial, I am upset with Dev for two things
1) He could have expressed his position to Sona without yelling at her. That was just inconsiderate and disrespectful of him.
2) He could have at least pointed out to his mother not to drag Sona into this matter as she kept saying naye puraane rishtey. Sona gave her suggestion but the decision was mine, which I will now change for you maa. Now the consequences will be because of you.

Sona should take a step back and let Dev fight his inner demons and offer support as a friend in this case, coz this is a sensitive issue for Dev.

Omg it was very emotional. Similar to my some comments supporting Dev. Yes that's truth it happens in most of the families.

I feel bad for Sona too. She is lost and trying to find her place and is being attacked unfairly by his family. Which he isn't aware of. She came with fixed notions of what a wife should be or what kind of a wife she wanted to be.

Now she's finding there is a difference in what she thinks she should be and what they expect from her. She should adjust accordingly, have a calm chat with Dev at a calmer time and things will improve.

Sigh. It's hard to watch your early wedding problems on a screen all over again...

Great personal story. It's great that your father wants to be responsible for all his family. But still, there are some wrongs that happened to his wife especially. She never got the respect she truly deserves. So just because it happens in many families, it doesn't mean that it is right. I want to see what is right in the show. I don't want to see Dev endlessly slogging for the sake of his mother and her whims and Sonakshi looking at him longingly for her whole life. That's not right. It would be better if Dev just gives away everything he earned until now to his blood sucking family and leaves the house with Sona. If he is smart and hard working, he will be able to make a life for himself again. He has no right to drag Sonakshi through the mud along with him.

It's his burden to bear, he would say. But he made sure his kids didn't get second hand effects. Our obligations are to take care of him and Mum only, thankfully. I even told him frankly, that he's spoiling the younger generation by spoonfeeding them. How will they depends on themselves?

As for our serial, I am upset with Dev for two things
1) He could have expressed his position to Sona without yelling at her. That was just inconsiderate and disrespectful of him.

He shouldn't have, of course. But everyone has their weak moments, Sia. That's life. We have a bad day, we lash out. Dev just came home from a long day at work, only to be ambushed at the door very harshly. Ishwari was unusually hard on him and scolded him like she would an errant child. In front of everyone. It was awful. Where was Dev ki izzat? She verbally lashed him and accused him of forgetting the people who helped their family because of his new wife. Sonakshi was there. She heard the direct accusation.

Of course, Dev doesn't think Sonakshi influenced him or manipulated him. But his mother was disappointed in him and it stung like hell. He will come around, but he did ask for some space. He needs to find a balance between the two women, and neither is going to like it. 😕. Each has to give way for middle ground.

2) He could have at least pointed out to his mother not to drag Sona into this matter as she kept saying naye puraane rishtey. Sona gave her suggestion but the decision was mine, which I will now change for you maa. Now the consequences will be because of you.

that's the next step were waiting for... Ishwari has compromised her saintly persona today. If she continues in this angry bullying manner, Dev will start to see past the halo. And if Sonakshi stays neutral she will emerge as the more stable part of his life.

Sona should take a step back and let Dev fight his inner demons and offer support as a friend in this case, coz this is a sensitive issue for Dev.

A very interesting post I liked your narration to make a point.

I would like to add another point :
Debt of gratitude does not have to be repaid in kind like how GKB and Vicky are expecting.

Debt of gratitude can also be paid through advises, emotional outpours, hug, kisses, brotherly love, providing a shoulder, proving personal training to Vicky how to achieve the Sales manager post instead the gruesome reality that the company might get into trouble, something untangible which is how Parents and Children function generally.

Parents do not sign any contact with their children that I gave birth to you, did your upbringing so in return I expect you to pay my medical bills, provide me a room during my old age and importantly keep me entertained. Children do what ever possible because they feel like, they repay in different ways - being sensitive to their requirements inspite a money crunch. Its not business of give and take - its relationships.

A surprise gift irrespective of the amount involved is different from giving Rs. 500. I know the difference very much - alot of emotions are involved in this.

Like how Ria is learning through those untangible ways, Vicky can too. This whole Vicky track is not about gratitude at all, that is just an excuse Ishwari came up with, its just to prove GKB that Dev is married to Sonakshi namesake, Dev is still Ishwari's son, never Sonakshi's husband. This track is also to show bias that Ishwari has for daughters v/s sons. Ria has to work the ladder, but Vicky gets it doing nothing.

In the past Dev/Ishwari did give money to Vicky for his college course that was different - no one was being hurt, except it was money not being utilized.
