Contrary to its name, Bridge Day is not actually a celebration of bridges themselves, but a celebration instead of the world of BASE jumpers. These adrenaline junkies engage in jumping from Buildings, Antenna's, Spans (The aforementioned bridges), and Earth (cliff jumping), and Bridge Day was organized to create a formal event for all of them, and to recognize these daredevils.

History of Bridge Day

Held on the third Saturday in October, Bridge Day is the largest formalized jumping event into the world. Hundreds of BASE jumpers have been gathering every year since 1980 to participate in this extreme sport. Utilizing parachutes or wingsuits, this sport has been gathering a respectable following for years, even though it is currently still considered an extreme sport.

Prohibited in some areas, Bridge Day is both a celebration of the sport itself, as well as a push for legitimacy amongst its adherents. When BASE jumpers have completed a jump from at least one of each of the four categories, they're awarded a BASE number. The first to complete this were Phil Smith and Phil Mayfield (cautious parents, this may be a warning against naming your children Phil), and are therefore noted as BASE #1 and BASE #2. As the BASE numbers grew, a separate category was awarded for those completing night-time jumps, and thus was born Night BASE #1, first won by Phil Mayfield, and followed again by Phil Smith.

Parachute attempts have come and go since early in the history of science, initially recorded as having been done by Faust Vrancic. But all of these were solitary events. It wasn't until 1978 that parachuting began taking off as a hobby. Since then it has become prominent in action films and other cinema.

How to Celebrate Bridge Day

For those who enjoy a good show, you can attend one of the many events around the world celebrating Bridge Day. There can't be anything more fun and entertaining then watching dare devils plummet from hundreds of feet to descend to earth like gentle leaves or, in the case of wing suits, diving raptor birds.

If you're particularly daring, you can take this as your opportunity to start participating in the event yourself. BASE jumping is a particularly dangerous hobby, so you're going to want to make sure you find yourself a trainer and a group to educate you on safe practices and ensure that I'ts legal where you are.

Sometimes you just need to set yourself free... from the earth and everything else for a few minutes.

Educational games can add up to a lot of fun, as World Maths Day goes to show. The annual event encourages thousands of students from around the world to take a break from standard maths lessons. Instead, they take part in competitive maths-themed games, with the chance to win certificates and prizes. The aim is to help raise standards of numeracy.

Since it was founded in 2007 by the organisation 3P Learning, World Maths Day has seen its popularity multiply fast. It's now part of the World Education Games, linking schools from many parts of the globe, and in 2010 the event established a world record for the largest-ever online maths contest. Children as young as five can get involved, competing against others from abroad in real time. It is also possible to play via mobile phones so that even more youngsters can discover the number-themed activities.

World Students' Day is a celebration of multiculturalism, diversity and cooperation among students across the globe. Though originally a day of commemoration of the more than 1,200 students from the University of Prague whose lives were taken in WWII, World Students' Day has become an occasion for universities the world over to boast their masses of international students, and the good they do for the local community.

Students display and celebrate their acts of social responsibility and have gatherings on campus to showcase the causes they volunteer for, take part in gleeful competitions, indulge in student food, gossip about the student unions and complain about their student fees. Although decidedly not as elevated or as relevant to mankind as the activities of the forefathers of World Students' Day, these gatherings attract a good deal of involvement, donations and attention for organisations and charities.

If you have a student at home, or if you yourself are among those who were privileged to be selected by universities to pay a fortune for courses which will most likely never be applicable to the career path you will ultimately choose, then spend this day thinking about student life, with its ups and downs, and about how you would like future generations to experience these few life-defining years.

History of Sweetest Day

On October 8th, 1921, Cleveland Confectioners came together to create a new day to celebrate the people's love of candy and each other. On the first celebration of this day 20,000 boxes of candy were distributed throughout the city, everyone from newsboys, old folks, the poor, and orphans were gifted with delicious treats to help make it the "Sweetest Day of the year for them.

From there the idea spread through big cities like New York and Detroit, expanding in popularity and importance as the years went on. Through various promotions Sweetest Day has gone on to become a popular choice for charity drives, including by organizations like the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children, starting as early as October 17, 1940.
