I didn't know what to title this post but hopefully it will not be confusing.
No there were no declarations of love, no there were no major overt progressions. What happened today was a subtle but significant progress in understanding.
His Smart Savior
He did not hesitate even for a moment as he told Bade Papa the details of how Anika had saved them; he who refused to apologize or thank her, he stood firm, head held high with pride at what she had done, a slight smile at the way she had done it, his voice oozing respect, admiration, and yes, that unregistered word, affection.
She was right there, picking on the first fact and glaring at him with narrowed eyes, ready to fight. He definitely felt the air exit all his sails at that as he pointed out, a bit intimidated, if she had heard the praise.
And then all of a sudden, she knew she had to tell him, to share with him all that had happened, to share with him the details of how she had shouldered his responsibilities as he lay in pain, hating it. Arguing would be baseless, a waste of this precious time of shared success.
And as she narrated, he listened. Took in every word, every gesture with wide eyes so as to not miss a single detail, he moved when she moved, followed her with not just his eyes, but his throbbing head as well, until she landed plush in his arms, taking them both by surprise.
As the air changed and darkness dawned, it felt more like all light focused on the two of them. Anika's night-banisher, Shivaay: The destroyer of darkness.
Letting go reluctantly, he held on to the couch behind him for dear life, what if he pulled her close again?
Family
When Bade Papa said those words, he felt rather than saw Anika's eyes glisten with unshed tears of gratitude, of belonging, of longing. Their eyes met and he could not, would not look away. He stood by his words, he meant what he had said and would repeatedly show it to her, if that is what it took to make her eyes happy again.
All he knew was she lived with Sahil and a bua. He could never have guessed the pain in those eyes that sometimes overshadowed their happy sparkle.
He could not know any of her past problems, except the ones he gave to her. And yet, he refused to break eye contact. As if, as if telling her he will stand with her till she regains her composure. As if he wanted to be a part of this moment, share it only with her: their own secret moment of togetherness and harmony amidst THEIR family.
But he got a call, and reluctant to leave her side (as it were), he had to take it: she was not his first sub-priority at the moment, unfortunately. But, he lingered, he hesitated, and that was enough.
She could not imagine she would feel so cold and alone as soon as he left the room. She had not even realized he was the reason of her warmth at this time. But there it was, that sting that he had left behind; she watched as he walked away from her, despite himself, leaving her alone amidst people who accepted and respected her for who she was.
