Amitabh Bachchan who has always espoused women empowerment, today reiterated his stand for the cause of the girl child while speaking at the press meet held to announce the launch of Global Citizen Festival of India.
"We as a nation are extremely proud of our women. We have a huge cultural backdrop and we are fast changing that. Why should a woman or wife walk 10 steps behind their husband. There are many reasons why we need to change all that. 50 percent of the strength of our nation should be women. They need their dignity, their presence and honour in our society. That's what we need to work for."
Narrating a tale from his Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) days, Amitabh recollected, "As the host of KBC, I once met a girl of 23-years old when she came the hot seat. She was from a rural area and told me that she was stopped from being educated when she was in the seventh or eighth standard. And her father told her that we are not going to educate you anymore because the people of the village have told us that we don't need to waste more money on your education because you will be getting married. The girl revolted against this thinking. She left her home and went to her grandmother's house where she was treated equally badly and was made to do menial jobs. But she educated herself on her own to finally reach the hot seat of KBC. During the course of the game she won 25 lakhs and when I asked her what she would do with the cheque she told me that she would go and give it to her father and tell him that their daughter is also an asset to the family."
The actor also exhorted others to take part in and becoming an example for the rest of the community to see that change happens in society.
