#2 PREGNANCY
writen by mansi
Aman was lying in her room, waiting for her beloved husband to show up now. She has been alone for over some days, in this big house. Its not that no one was home. Everybody was. But the one she wants to be with, was out for a week now. He should be back. He promised her to be and she had been looking forward to it a bit too anxiously. Of course she will, she is going to be away from him for a few months though they still will be in the same city. She is going to her brother's house despite her futile attempts to dodge the preposition. Viraj was way too excited to let the opportunity of pampering a pregnant aman go, he really is fond of her. He was almost bouncing like a kid high on sugar when vasu told him about the tradition of a daughter or sister coming back to her maayka for sometime during pregnancy. So he first asked her nicely about it and when she rejected his proposal, he resumed to the infamous emotional blackmail and she succumbed to his demands. She silently cried in bliss thinking how could she got so lucky that there is almost everyone on her beck and call, everyone trying to make her happy. Blame the pregnancy hormones, she thought as some tears raced down her cheeks thinking how some time ago, she had no one to call her own and now she has a crazy family and soon is going to start her own. Wiping those traitors, she willed herself up and sighed as her back protested due to the heavy belly. A hand on her back and another one on her protruding stomach, a stance she had became accustomed to in these fellow months, she left for the window sill. A gush of wind tickled her face and a smile spread across her features. She stared up to look at the vast dark sky lighting up with starry night. How she wished to have him here with her in this moment. How she wished to be in his arms and be in peace. A bustle of approaching footsteps broke her trance and instantly she was wrapped in the most magnificent and familiar scent of him making her sigh in contentment. Oh! Her wish was granted.
Sliding his arms around her pregnant figure, umesh felt the feeling of belonging and home once again. He placed his large hand on her stomach, sprawling and covering her skin trying to feel their token of love in there. "hey..." he muttered in her hair inhaling her sweet self. "i missed u" she leaned on him while he tightened his arms around him. "i missed u more aman... and i missed my little one too" he whispered back placing a kiss on her shoulder. "let me see u... i havent seen u in a week" he turned her around and took a good look of a very shy aman. He had to suck in a breath to calm his heart which was racing at the speed of a tornado seeing his wife looking so ethereal even in her simple maternity attire. "u look..." he stopped short... failing at words to describe how beautiful she looked. The moonlight falling on half of her features were giving her a soft look. Her eyes were half open observing him, breathing shallow as her lips parted gulping on the air. His eyes roamed on her features, admiring the way her body is filling itself in places. She waited him to complete his sentence but when he did not budged, a wave of insecurity washed her. "i look like a whale... right?" she said with a nervous laugh covering her anxiety. His eyes snapped to hers and a small frown appeared on his face. "no.. u look beautiful... exquisite even..." he told her with sincerity to which she only rolled her eyes. " i weight more than a ton now" she pouted as he laughed at her cuteness. "no... u weight just a bit more because u have a little one inside u" he stated and wrapped her in a warm, nerve soothing hug. The instance she fell in his arms, her body let go off all energy making her slumped in his embrace. Pain and exhaustion shoot through her as a groan escaped from her pretty mouth. "tired...?" he inquired now a bit worried for her well being. He was aware of how this pregnancy is taking a toll on her making her tired so very often. She nodded her head a little when she felt him lifting her up in his arms. "laddo..." she sighed as he marched towards their bed and made her lie down, stuffing a lot of pillows behind her back. He then pulled some more pillows under her feets and started massaging them in a slow and rhythmic manner.she moaned at the sensation of relief and pain dissipating through them. "how are u now..." he asked as he heard her even breathing and occasional groans of pain. "yeah... now leave it and come here" she pouted extending her arm towards him. He looked up and gave her a wistful smile, obliging to her demand. Soon they were spooning with his arms around her while she was cocooned in his warmth. "m going to miss u..." she whispered ruefully, her fingers playing with his. "then don't go... i don't want u to go... i want to take care of u and my baby here... and i want to go all out and redecorate our room, stay here and help me..." he muttered, his words muffled in her hair. She laughed sensing his pout "no laddo... u r not going all out and buy the whole market for our baby... that's too much" she said turning to him. "Why not..." he whined like a baby and it took a lot of restraint on her part to not throw herself on him. "Because it's too much... u already have filled this place with everything we will be needing for next one year and i dont want u to spend so much when we have to plan a future" she stated. "When u became this sensible..?" he muttered under his breath but she heard it. "Hey..." she protested to which he gave her a cheeky smile. "Ok... i won't buy anything else... but u have to let me pamper u all i want til you abandoned me and go away to viraj sir's.." he bargained to which she begrudgingly oblige knowing fully what it means for him to pamper her. "Ok..." she replied not before giving him another pout. He grinned again as they lie there talking half the night about anything and everything till it became impossible for aman to keep her eyes open. The next day aman wake up to a delicious smell filling her nostrils causing her stomach to rumble. She opened one eye to find umesh looking down at her with his hand holding a breakfast tray, giving her a soft smile. She smiled back at the site of her husband looking all handsome first thing in the morning, with his heart melting smile. She attempted to sit back but hissed in pain which seared inside her head almost making her dizzy. She sighed knowing this was again a routine for her. This pregnancy is going to be a difficult phase yet a beautiful journey. "U ok?" umesh looked at her panicked and she remembered he didn't knew about these headaches. "M fine... this is normal... just a headache nothing much.." she shrugged like it was a minor detail but it hit umesh right at the place. "Since when... and why didn't u told me about it aman... i was just gone for a week and u seemed to be so careless..." he placed the tray on side table and started rummaging through it's cabinets. She kept looking at him with a loving smile when he exclaimed in victory holding a balm like freaking trophy. She couldn't help but laugh at his antics when he rubbed the contents on her forehead like she was a glass doll which can break any moment. After applying it, he sat by her side and made her eat almost everything on the tray with his own hands as she kept looking at him like a creep. "What..??" he asked when she didn't averted her gaze. She bit her lip which looked like she was controlling herself but that didn't last long when he went on to massage her head. She quickly held his cheeks in her fingers pinching the living day light out of him. "Chhooo cute ladoo.." she said in voice of a small baby making him laugh out loud at his adorable wife.
Umesh managed to get through the day, juggling between shop, restaurant and his wife who needs his utmost attention. It was tiring to say the least but he wasn't complaining. He loves to take care of aman specially now when she was walking on the most beautiful yet difficult path of their marriage life and he didn't want to be left behind. He so wanted to take away her problems but he knew he can't so he was satisfied in taking good care of her. It somehow make him feel attached to their unborn child. He made his way to their room through dimly lit corridors of his house only to find her sleeping like a baby. he smiled at her slight scowl feature and adjusted pillows around her. He stood up and looked down at her glowing face. He noticed how beautiful she looked now, not that she wasn't before, but now when she is pregnant he thought as if she is someone else. Her aura had become more loveable. Not only her body but also her personality has taken a turn. She had become more sensible, more mature taking everything at a mature level. He smiled thinking how previously in day, she scolded him for not planning their restaurant's upgrade. He bend down and kissed her forehead before making himself comfortable beside her, falling asleep instantly. A sound of rustling sheets wake him up. He got startled seeing aman sitting on her side with her head resting on the headboard. "hey... aman?" he said sitting straight and looking at her worriedly. He watched her anxiously as she opened her eyes and smiled at him tiredly. "Why are u awake" he asked pulling her to his side. She smiled at him before pecking his cheek. "Our baby is playing football inside..." she said and winced simultaneously but still had a smile. He looked at her with a cute frown when she placed his hand on her bulging stomach. That's when he felt a kick from inside almost feeling the small feet in his skin. His eyes were bulging out when he heard her laugh followed by another kick and a wince. "Must be painful..." he looked at her with somewhat apologetically. "Not in the least... it's joyful" she smiled. "U wake up every night?" he asked rubbing her belly in a hope to sooth her. "Yes... since a week now..." she replied leaning on his shoulder. "A lot changed just in a week..i shouldn't have gone leaving u here" he felt bad. "That was imp... beside i experience changes like these almost everyday so nothing to worry about. "But i feel bad.." he said. "For making me pregnant?..." she barked in laughter at his horrified expression. "Noo... not that... i mean i feel bad because it's only u who had to endure so much and i can't do anything to lessen them" he sighed, playing with her hair. "U do more than u should laddo.." she said. "What do u mean..." he questioned in confusion. "U look after me, compromise on things without me getting it noticed, u put up with my stupid mood swings, ran like a maniac to meet up with my untimely cravings, sooth my pain and most importantly u love me still when i m like a football stadium.." she said softly making patterns on his shirt. Her last comment made him burst out laughing to which she smacked his arm. "U are not a football let alone a stadium... u dont even weight like a pregnant lady.." he said wistfully. "As if u have picked up a lot of pregnant ladies.." she said huffing which only increased his laughter. "Not that but i did my research..." he boosted. "U did what..." she looked at him when he chuckled and tucked her beneath the covers when they felt no more kicks. "Looks like future footballer is tired.. Finally" he mumbled in relief. "What were u saying" she asked. "I said.. I did my research and read a lot about how to be a good parent' when u were asleep in ur early months" he smiled sheepishly while she shook her head. God how come she had been so lucky. He truly is gem of a person. "That's why u knew what to do whenever i throw a tantrum or face a change..." she said putting the pieces of his perfect remedies. "Yup... maa and chachi helped too.." he admitted patting her forehead. She felt overwhelmed to know the extents he had been through these months for her. She knew how hard it had been to manage the restaurant, shop and taking care of her. She had witnessed his dark bags and tired features which he masked effectively in front of her. Unable to contain her emotions, she ducked her head and kissed him squarely on his mouth, startling him. He gasped in surprise but leaned in kissing her softly.
"I luv u..." she whispered against his lips.
"I know..." he replied before pecking her lips again and hugged her close.
"Nisha what is it?" Ramesh asked.
He was sitting in the living room of his daughter's house. She sounded really excited on the phone and he came rushing as usual.
Nisha was digging through her closet until her hand clasped around a white cover. She took out the small wrapped up package inside and gave it to Ramesh with a huge smile.
"Ye kya hai?" he asked.
"Kholke dekho na papa," she's said.
He unwrapped it and found a keychain. It had a note symbol along with a harmonica.
"Happy birthday papa!" She said with her hands up in the air.
Ramesh's face broke into a smile. He hugged his daughter.
"Thank you beta lekin mera birthday kal hai."
"Pata hai. Uske liye maine aur Kabir ne milkar kuch plan kiya hai lekin ye meri taraf se."
Ramesh confused.
"Aapko yaad hai jab main choti thi to humesha aapka harmonica bajana chahti thi. To aapke birthday par apne mujhe bajana sikhaya. Bhale hi aaj mein music stream mein nahi hoon lekin us din mujhe ehsaas hua ki aap mujhe apna happy waala gaana kyun bulaate hain. Aapka gaana itna mast tha us din. Jab bhi aap mere liye gate ho na to kuch extra perfect hai."
Ramesh was almost in tears. He didn't know that his daughter remember such an old incident. Then he realized that if the moment is important one can remember it however old it is.
He hugged his daughter over more time. He was so happy that his happy waala gaana was living the life she wants doing what she wants. She has everything he wanted for her.
Nisha returned the hug with equal love. She couldn't thank God enough for such an amazing father. Someone who protected her and thought the world for her. Kabir might be the love of her life but her dad will always remain her hero.
The father daughter duo were lost on their bliss that they didn't realize that there was a pair of eyes watching them. Kabir had come home early to surprise Nisha. When she showed him the keychain before he said that it was too small a gift and not with presenting. After what he witnessed understood the meaning and feelings behind the trinket.
That's when it hit him. His wife was doing so much for her dad's birthday. Their bond is beyond perfect and he didn't even know his dad to feel any kind of connection of that sort. He didn't have a man who did everything to make him happy. Unknowingly his vision blurred with tears. He left the house before Nisha and Ramesh realized that was there in the first place.

Kabir almost knocked on the door when opened revealing Kaira dressed in a beautiful saree.
"Accha baba jaa rahe hain hoon," she said looking towards their kitchen.
She turned and looked towards the already open door to find her Devar. She noticed that he wasn't his usual self. On any other day he would have already peeped into the house in the direction a Kaira was looking and started joking about something. Today he seemed so lethargic.
"Kya hua Kabir?" she asked. She hoped that he didn't have a fight with a Nisha. Their fights always last for a long time and it hurts her to see them both in pain.
"Kuch nahi bhabhi," a Kabir said forcing a smile.
Kaira wasn't convinced but before she could all anything her husband was at the door.
"Aap kisse baat kar rahe hain?" he said before he saw Kabir. He was wearing and apron which was almost covered in wheat flour. He then noticed Kabir and expected a joke for his flour covered attire but he noticed that Kabir's face was solemn. Kaira sensed that they were due a bro moment. She turned to her husband and said,
"Ek kaam karte hain. Aap Kabir ke saath bahar jaayiye aur main khana banati hoon," she suggested.
Viraj turned his attention back to his wife on hearing this. He looked at her sharply and pushed her out of the door.
"No ways," he said. "Aap har din khana banate hain. Aaj humara day off hai aur aap enjoy karenge aur hum khana banaenge."
Kaira shook her head and looked from Kabir to Viraj and back. Viraj understood what his woman was trying to say.
"Kabir humara madad karenge, right?" Viraj said.
The younger brother gave a faint smile and nodded.
"Aap jaayiye bhabhi. Hum sambhal lenge."
Kaira hesitated at first but then she didn't want to argue with either of the Rathore brothers especially since she noticed that something was wrong. She left the two boys praying that they don't burn the penthouse down.
Viraj headed back to the kitchen and Kabir followed him.
"Kaira ne cook rakhne se mana kar diya. Woh chahti hain ki hum sirf unke haathon ka khana khaaya. Jab hum chote the na to sirf cook ke khana khaate the. Mom jo nahi thi. Isisliye Kaira aur ziddh karti hai is baat ko lekar. Dad ke baad maine kabhi mom ke haat ka khana nahi khaya. Mujhe yaad bhi nahi hai uska taste. Jab mom wapas ayi aur phirse mere liye kuch na kuch banakar lati hain tab bohot accha lagta hai hume."
Kabir watched his brother go on and on as he tried to create the roti dough out of the flour.
"Aapko dad ke baare mein kya yaad hai?" he asked.
Viraj stopped punching into the almost formed dough and looked up at his younger brother. That's when he realized that he lost their mother's company in his childhood but his brother never even knows their dad.
"Bohot strict the. Sare Rathores aise hi the. Rules aur discpline follow karte hain. Dad utna pyaar nahi dikhate the. Mujhe laga wo humse pyaar nahi karte, lekin kabhi kabhi main unhe aur Maa ko tension mein dekh samajh jaata tha ki our father is like a Coconut, hard from outside, soft from inside. He always would tease Maa saying that he wants a Junior Vasundhara, or another Junior Arjun" Viraj said, lost in thoughts
Kabir's heart broke a little. He thought he's the only one who was hurting because he never had a dad around. Now he found out that his dad too wanted him, but destiny took him away from them.
"Kya hua Kabir?" Viraj asked. "Aap pareshaan lag rahe hain. Jab se aye hain aapne mera mazak nahi udaya aur chup chap humari baatein sun rahe hain."
"Kucch nahi bade bhaiyya wo...aaj maine Nisha aur Papa ko saath mein khush dekh kar sochne laga ki agar dad hota to hum dono saath mein kitne khush hote."
Viraj gave up on the dough and washed his hands. He walked up to Kabir and placed his hands on his shoulder.
"He would have been very proud of you," Viraj said.
"Main bas unke baare mein sunna chahthe hun," Kabir said.
"Main batati hun Jojo," Vasundara said from the entrance of the kitchen. She smiled at them but Kabir noticed that her eyes were a little wet.
"Mom main aapko upset nahi karna chahtha tha," Kabir said looking concerned. He didn't think that his mom would over hear everything.
"Koi baat nahi Jojo. Tera haq banta hai Arjun ji ke baare mein janane ka. Ab mein batati hun tere Dad ke baare mein."
The two brothers sat down with their mother at the dining table as she began talking.
"Aapko dono pata hai aap bilkul aapke papa par gaye hain. Wo mujhe kabhi-kabhi mujhe bahar bhej kar humare liye khaane banate the. Gifts aur pyaar se mere zindagi bharte the. Chahe jo bhi hai wo humare saath the."
There was a pause while Vasundhara and Viraj got lost in their memories. Kabir on the other hand had a blank mind.
"Agar wo hote to mere Bachpan ko bhi pyaar se bharte the?"
The older woman noticed the doubtful tone in his son's words. She turned his face towards her.
"Hum nahi jaante destiny ne humare saath aisa kyun kiya, par haan, he would have pampered you like anything. Viraj ko toh woh ek minute nahi chodte the, gifts, chocolates, sweets, what not! Hum kitna daantate the, par no asar. He was the best dad I have ever known.
Viraj, "Aapko pata hai Kabir, Papa chahte the ki unke doosre bete ka naam Kabir ho yaa agar beti hui toh Sapna, aur Mom ne unki wish poori ki,
She wiped her tears, "your dad loves you beta. Woh jaahan bhi hai, tumhe dekh rahe hai, never doubt that son,
"Kabhi doubt nahi karunga mom," Kabir said as he silently cried into her shoulders.
~~~
It had become quiet late at night. Kabir had texted Nisha that he'll be having dinner with his mom. He knew she'd start awake for him so he returned right after dinner. To his surprise the house was dark. There's was no light except for a faint yellow coming from their room. Kabir expected a candle light surprise. He entered the room to find Nisha sitting next to a photo of his dad and a small cupcake in front of it. The faint light was from the candle atop the cupcake.
"Nisha te sab kya hai?" he asked.
That's when she looked up to find Kabir standing with a puzzled look.
"Viraj Sir ne mujhe phone karke sab kucch bata dia," she said.
He sat next to her.
"Kabir mein andaaza bhi nahi kar Sakti hoon ki tum par kya beeth raha hai," she continued.
She placed a hand on his cheek.
"Lekin itna pata hai ki Papa tujhse bohut pyaar karte hain aur main... Tum mere duniya ho Kabir. Tune mujhe jeena sikhaya."
"Nisha, I'm sorry. Kal papa ka birthday hai aur meri wajah se aaj tera mood kharab-"
"Jab tum khush nahi ho to main kaise khush rahungi," she said.
He held the hand that she had placed on his cheek and kissed it. She could see that he wants to break down one last time for the day and hugged him tight. She had never known how it felt to grow up without a dad and seeing Kabir like this broke her heart.
"Aaj tak tune apne dad ke liye kuch special nahi kar pata to kya hua? Ab kar lena," she said.
The broke the hug. Kabir blew the candle and they shared the cupcake.
"Dad jaahan bhi hai na yeh dekh kar khush ho raha hoga," Nisha said and let her own tears rolled down. She couldn't hold back any longer.
Kabir cupped her face in his hands.
"I love you," he said.
"I love you too Kabir."
With that she kissed him. Letting the kiss console him. They stayed in each others arms for quiet sometime and soon Nisha feel asleep on Kabir's chest. He looked at the beautiful woman in his arms and knew one thing- wherever his dad is he would tell him,
"Yeh ladki aapke liye perfect hai."
