It used to be my favourite reality show for many years...
Like a loyal viewer of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, I was thrilled when the new season was announced. And that too with some of my favourite actors. The timing did catch me by surprise. I loved Jhalak at 9pm on Saturday and Sunday. This time it was just a single show on a weekend. Well, so it better be doubly good. Sadly, this season has failed to rev up any interest whatsoever. Here are a few reasons...
Lacklustre opening
The first show of this season was nowhere close to what we have seen before. When we thought we would see some of TV's best faces rocking the stage with jaw-dropping performances, we saw them performing in duos and groups of three. Such rounds took place in the later stage of Jhalak in previous seasons. The joy of seeing your favourite contestant shining solo on a stage was robbed.
Rating system
Earlier, we had public voting. Yes, it is true that there is ambiguity in that sms method but the current system is equally confusing. It is a combined score of judges' marks and audience ratings. Does this mean that an actor who can bring more relatives/friends on the sets will fare better? Somehow, this evaluation method has not gone down well with many.

Judges chair
There is no doubt that Jacqueline Fernandez is one of the sweetest and most glam gals around. However, her judging a dance show is a little incomprehensible. We cannot understand on what basis she is marking contestants as those with high praises have scored badly and ones who were not lauded earned good points. We hope the arrival of Farah Khan changes things on that front.

Sad eliminations
The fact that Poonam and Priyanka were ousted so early from the show has sent out a signal that there is something seriously wrong with the marking system. Many genuine dance lovers were dissed with this. Also, the idea of double eliminations has not gone down well.
Lack of humour
Many fans fondly remember the punches that Manish Paul cracked in the earlier seasons. Somehow, the humour quotient is also off. Karan Johar does not seem to be in his element. He was in better form in India's Got Talent.
Too much experimentation
We heard there is something like family round and a set of kids will be coming in to challenge the contestants in a week's time. Somehow, this has robbed Jhalak of its true essence.
Not the right mix!
There is no denying that the current crop of contestants are some of TV's most popular names. But take a closer look at the mix. Salman Yusuff Khan, Shantanu Maheshwari and Nora Fatehi are great dancers. Karishma Tanna, Surveen Chawla and Siddhant Gupta are above moderate. Only Shakti Arora, Arjun Bijlani and Helly Shah are genuine non-dancers. The real idea of Jhalak from a non-dancer to a dancer has become vague!
