First Meeting
"Mr. Abhi, I promise you she is the best person for the job. She's an expert in children's literature and has a lot of experience. She's one of our most popular professors too, and I think you'll find her personality is exactly suited to the project." The dean took another biscuit from the tray and dunked it into his tea. "She's just finishing up a lecture and will be here any moment," he said with a reassuring smile before biting into his biscuit.
Abhi nodded politely and tried not to look at his watch. The ten minutes he had spent waiting for this perfect professor felt like an eternity already. Ever since his accident, he hated sitting still, and it was only sheer force of will that had kept him seated quietly with the dean for so long. If the professor didn't make her appearance soon, he'd probably have to start pacing to let out his agitation, and too bad if that looked rude to the dean.
Just as the itch under his feet was flaring up, the door finally opened. Abhi stood up immediately, his body happy for even that little activity even as his brain was complaining that he wasn't keeping his cool.
The woman at the door froze as his gaze fell on her, but he could tell right away that it wasn't the normal kind of fangirl awe his presence usually inspired. There was something different about the way she was looking at him, with her wide eyes so startled and the instant flush of red in her cheeks. She wasn't
impressed to see him, but she was surprised.
He found himself walking towards her without realizing that he was moving. He held his hand out to her, extending his palm out even before he was within touching distance of her. "Hi, I'm -"
"Aap -" she suddenly looked at the dean instead of him. "Aapne mujhe bulaya?"
Abhi was amazed to realize she was ignoring him, and he watched in confusion as she walked right past him to take a seat in front of the dean. How could she have missed him trying to introduce himself? Or was she so formal that she was waiting on instructions from her boss first? Her conservative - and elegant - salwar suit suggested that she might be very old-fashioned indeed, but then again there was something fresh about her face, some youthful energy just from her presence, that made her sure that this woman was
not going to be the boring type of professor he had expected.
"Yes, Pragya, I'm glad you are here! Mr. Abhi is launching a very important project for the orphanage he sponsors, and he has chosen our college to run the educational side. The department has selected you to be his partner. Now, about the details..."
The dean launched into an explanation of everything Abhi had already told him about the project. Abhi quietly returned to his seat and watched as the perfect professor - with the pretty name of Pragya, apparently - listened attentively to the dean's every word. He realized quickly that what he was doing could only be called staring, and yet he couldn't look away. But she didn't react at all to his gaze, keeping her focus squarely on the dean.
"And so, effective immediately, you are being reassigned to work exclusively on the orphanage project for the rest of the semester. I have to get to a board meeting now but you and Mr. Abhi can begin your planning here for today, and from tomorrow we will set you up with your own office down the hall," the dean concluded, getting to his feet and gathering some papers for his meeting as he spoke.
Pragya rose from her chair too, so Abhi followed suit and stood up.
"I - but, sir -" Professor Pragya said, her pretty lips working futilely as she apparently struggled with her words. "Sir, I really don't think -"
"No time, my dear!" the dean said heartily, completely ignoring her tone of protest. He clapped Abhi's shoulder and somehow nudged him toward Pragya, making them stand closer as he made his way from the room. "I know you'll do us proud. This is the beginning of a beautiful partnership!" So saying, the dean left them alone in his office, the door clicking shut behind him.
Abhi turned to look at the professor, getting ready to introduce himself again, because it was the polite thing to do. But when he met her eyes, the words disappeared from his tongue, and his mind went blank. He had the odd feeling that he was falling somewhere deep and fast, even though he knew his feet were planted in place. But it wasn't a scary fall, it was like floating into the deepest peace, some primal return to a safe place he couldn't name.
"I've been waiting to meet you," he found himself saying softly. "Now we can finally get started."
"Y-yes," she said, choking on the single syllable. "Let's get...started."
