Deepika Padukone has essayed a variety of characters in her lustrous acting career so far. Deepika is seen playing a feisty role along with Vin Diesel in Hollywood movie xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. She has previously done some meaty and interesting roles including that of Mastani in Bajirao-Mastani and Veronica in Cocktail. However, her Meera in Love Aaj Kal remains one of the most memorable and strongest characters that is etched in the memory of her fans forever. As Love Aaj Kal celebrates seven years today, here is a look at why Meera is a special character for Deepika.

Meera was one character that every other girl could relate to. Her character was a mix of innocence and strength. Deepika was playing a strong-minded career oriented woman. But at the same time film showed her following her heart.

Deepika Padukone, Love Aaj Kal, Deepika Padukone Meera, Meera Love aaj kal, Love aaj kal cast, Love aaj kal 7 yearsDeepika aka Meera's relationship with Jai essayed by Saif Ali Khan in Love Aaj Kal was outright cool and straightforward. There were no layers of shyness or hypocrisy in her character.

The film was also first-of-its-kind to show a freely independent woman, her lifestyle, choices, friend circles, and decisions. Meera's relationship with Jai essayed by Saif Ali Khan was outright cool and straightforward. There were no layers of shyness or hypocrisy in her character. Women in Indian cinema have been often portrayed in traditional, typical roles. This was different. Meera's role carried a freshly modern spirit with a tinge of values rooted in Indian culture. There was an undertone of emotional vulnerability , yet at the end of the day, she was as practical as any other man. Deepika did everything right to bring out this rare balance in her much-demanding role.

Deepika Padukone, Love Aaj Kal, Deepika Padukone Meera, Meera Love aaj kal, Love aaj kal cast, Love aaj kal 7 yearsIn the film, Meera married Vikram, but upon realizing that she is in love with Jai, she takes to confessing and quietly moves out of the relationship.

It was also a character that defied the usual norms of Hindi film industry. Meera married Vikram, but upon realizing that she is in love with Jai, she takes to confessing and quietly moves out of the relationship. You wouldn't have expected her to remain trapped in an unhappy marriage. Instead of leading a sad and miserable life, Meera allowed herself to live freely and happily.

Deepika Padukone, Love Aaj Kal, Deepika Padukone Meera, Meera Love aaj kal, Love aaj kal cast, Love aaj kal 7 yearsLove Aaj Kal's Meera like any modern woman experimented with life, made mistakes and learnt from them.

Another relief in Meera's character was its sheer imperfectness. Meera like any modern woman experimented with life, made mistakes and learnt from them.

The character was also new in respect with showing a woman with a professional career. Not many movies had done that before. Meera Pandit resorted to the profession of art Restoration. This was a rather unconventional and cool profession for women characters in the industry. Meera took pride in her work. Though the movie takes one through the high and lows of her personal life, one never sees Meera letting her career take a backseat.

hhmmm...makes sense...

but not always...as u said, she wasnt a career oriented woman in BM neither in Chennai Express, nor in Ram-leela...but other then those yes...maybe that is what she identifies herself more with.

but she wasnt career oriented in Cocktail...and people generally feel cocktail was the turning point for her career

Her character was confused and irresponsible. She made a mess of her as well as her poor husband's life, divorcing him just after marriage. Saif's character too was no great shakes. Worst love story ever.

Oh darn! I was just talking about this last night. I liked her when the movie released but surely not now when I am mature enough to understand what loyalty and trust means. She was meeting up with her ex w/o knowledge of her partner...hanging out with him...singing songs and getting drunk...Doesn't that sound pathetic?? 😵 I mean I dont think its anything wrong to meet up with your ex if you are still good friends and know your boundaries but please doing this secretively and not even being guilty about it...this is cheating. You cant term this as strength or straight forwardness. And then what she does after marriage is more pathetic. How can you just ruin someone's life like that and leaving them stranded in the middle of relationship because now u changed your mind. How dumb and irresponsible.

It was relatable in the sense that most young people today are like this- Confused & irresponsible. It was refreshing in that sense but I wouldn't call Meera "strong". She was like most Young & urbane Indian women today- Operating on 2 different levels , emotional & physical, in romantic relationships, great escapists.. To me that's more irresponsible than strong, lol. Saif's character was quite like younger Saif minus the poshness-- An urbane & charming well-to-do- man-child. I loved Meera's styling & clothes , THE MUSIC! And Rahul Khanna's cameo <3 , but hated how Saif & DP looked, such awkward chemistry!! 😆 😆 , almost as bad as Kat-Shah & Kat-Aamir lool!!

But strong isn't what I would name as an arriviste to either of them, lol. Off the top of my head, Piku was a pretty strong character if we are discussing DP's strong roles.

Her character wasnt irritating even though she was a confused soul.
And her performance made me like her until i joined this forum and hated her PR and RelationshipGoals
