SECOND SHOT

PART 2:

"How're you, Meena?" Jodha smiled to her as she had opened the door to welcome her. "Is your pain alright now?"

"Yes, yes madam..." The middle-aged maid of the house seemed to be over-exalted with this question. "I was trying to come yesterday also, but the..."

"It's okay; you needed rest." She told with decent smile. "Be careful Meena; these sudden pains in stomach is not a good sign. Had you gone to doctor? Or living only on pain-killers?"

"Hehe... " she chuckled. Jodha frowned with the smile intact. "This is the problem of the mothers of our India. They never care for own health! Okay... Let me have some coffee now; then I will check you up thoroughly!"

Meena, being overwhelmed by her new mistress's sweet gesture, kept on talking while doing her works... "You are really a Goddess madam! You care so much for us! You have a golden heart..." and her flow of talk as always went to the same direction- "If it had been our mem-sab, she would have eaten me alive for absenting yesterday! I shouldn't tell these... may god give her peace... but I have never seen such a kharoos aurat in my whole life! I mean Sab is such a gentleman and she... however, her last days were..."

Jodha sighed with a pale smile. Will this house ever be able to get out from the shadow of the former mem-sab'?! 2 weeks have passed since she had married still Jodha is an outsider in this house. The mistress of this house is still present in each and every corner of this apartment, controlling everything without even being present physically. Jodha has to feel it every moment... even Meena shows her this truth at every moment...

But what is Meena's fault! The person who is the owner of this house is still...

Sighing again, she was to keep her shoes on the shoe-rack and was shocked to see two pair of polished formal shoes still sitting at their place. She looked at her watch. "Is Jalal still at home?"

"He is still at bed." Meena replied while making coffee for her.

"O I see!" Jodha paced towards bedroom. She is known for her patience and sensibility, but today she could not help to suppress the frustrated grievance to burn her soul. Each and every day from their marriage Jalal sets off for office as soon as possible, returns home as late as possible when Jodha is at home- as if he is hiding from her! Yesterday night she had night-duty, so he came home at time, just before she left; now as she has come back earlier, she got to know he has no hurry for his office today! Aren't they just some excuses to avoid Jodha's company as much as possible!

She shook her head in dissatisfaction. It was a very grave bad decision of her to connect her life with Jalal forever again. She should have understood that a broken pot can never be fixed properly! How she dreamt to get back her same young charming prince of college in the dejected shadow of the man who has bent already to bear the load of his own world! And that world is too much private to give her access in there!

"Jalal?" She stepped inside the room and cast her glance on the bed. Jalal was awake with closed eyes. He opened the lashes and smiled. "Good Morning. You came back early?"

You are actually not happy with the fact! Jodha thought but did not utter. Instead she sat beside him and told- "You have no hurry today?"

"I was just about to go!" he chuckled. "Actually suddenly one side of my head is aching..."

"Where?" Jodha touched to press the spot of headache. "You are taking too much of stress nowadays." She commented.

"Maybe!" he sighed somehow unmindfully. Then he smiled to her. "Let's go for a short trip at this weekend. We should spend our honeymoon too, right!"

Jodha looked at him, then smiled an agonised smile. He wants to spend time with her and that is evident. There had been times when he himself proposed her to go for dinner or movie together outside the house but still...He has coated himself with a hard shell of mysterious silence from the day they married. It's impossible to break that!

"Before that let me check your BP!" Jodha waved the topic aside and got up. "You had a machine of checking BP right? Where is that? I left mine at chamber."

"Inside the last drawer..." He pointed at the nearby chest of drawers attached with the bed. She opened the drawer and got the machine. "Does it work?" She smiled.

"Much more than your old machine!" Jalal stated proudly. "For long 6 months I have regularly checked pressure in this and it gave much perfect result than yours did!"

"Our Jalal has learnt to check blood pressure too!" She giggled while checking his pressure. "I have learnt a lot of things on medical science these days Doctor Sahiba!" He winked. "You may keep me as your compounder now..."

"Free service or you will demand remuneration also? Hey Jalal..." Jodha's expression suddenly changed from fun to seriousness. "Your BP is quite high than normal."

"Hmm!" He became unmindful now. Once his BP had increased suddenly; Jalal was amused to see Ruqaiya tensed about that. "Hope you stop fighting with me by now-at least to save my life!" He had commented with laughter.

"I fight with you? Or you fight with me? Have you left any option..."She had started as usual.

"Again!" Jalal had sighed in fun. "It seems that High BP will not leave me until and unless you leave me!"

Jalal gripped his own fingers. Will not you leave me to live ever, Ruqaiya?

Jodha, who was quite relieved to see him normal and to have a light talk with him, had noticed the abrupt change in his facial expressions. "Jalal?"

"Yeah!" He wiped out the weary of face with chuckle. "Can you please bring a pain-killer for me?"

"Yes sure! But we have to think seriously about your blood pressure. Why do you keep so much stress now?" She had opened the other drawers to get the pills... "Pills are inside the cupboard." Jalal informed pointing the swing-door cupboard at the corner of the room.

"What?" She could not help but to laugh. "You keep useful medicines inside locked cupboard? Really Jalal!"

"Actually..." Jalal stated in a bit of ashamed tone, though his eyes had touched a strange gloomy cloud. "Three months back this room was full of medicines... the drawers, the tea-table, the study-table everything... so I thought to lock the less used medicines- like the painkiller or Paracetamol or enzymes or...the tranquilizers etc- inside the cupboard, so that the nurse herself doesn't get confused..."

"O...I see!" Jodha opened the chest of the cupboard and took the box of drugs in hand. As he said, all the household medicines are kept there... "I am astonished how you didn't need any of them during this time?" She chuckled. "Three months without any of medicines- and you! Hey, where are the sleeping pills?" She remembered how much foolish question she has slipped out, as she herself has seen him to take sleeping-pills before lying on the bed at time at least twice since they have married. But before that those were supposed to be locked inside the closed cupboard, as stated by Jalal just now!

"How Ruqaiya got those pills near her hands when they were locked inside cupboard? She was too weak to walk from own" Jodha couldn't keep this question aside which suddenly stung her head. But she herself assumed the answer for that. "Maybe for some reason you had to keep that out... Or someone like Meena or the nurse gave her those pills! But they were better there! At least... they would have been out of reach of her hands!" She sighed unmindfully! Taking one pill of pain-reliever in palm, she filled a glass of water, casually, like every professional, flowing with a past gloomy patch in her memory... very casual, unmindful she was... too much casual to even think that she should not start these discussions with her husband! "It was strange you know... I hardly traced any sign of acute depression in her ever! I have handled hundreds of cases like this, depression, suicidal tendency etc are not very uncommon but she hardly had any of those symptoms ever! " she sat beside him, sighed... "However... Take it... Jalal..." She shook him for once. "Jalal!"

"Haaah!" Jalal quivered as he got his sense back and cast his eyes on her. Like a spellbound he forwarded his palm to take the medicine, gulped that like a possessed soul.

"Is everything alright Jalal?" She was shocked to see Jalal's face. Not only shocked, rather she was speechless when she looked into his eyes... into the deep of this black, dark, numb orbs...

A moment of silence inside the room, but it was like a long era between them. Then suddenly, with a forceful hurry Jalal got up from bed and got out of the room.

It took some more minutes to understand the situation; Jodha stared at his path. Yes she should not have raised the topic on the death of Ruqaiya all of a sudden... actually she is mad at herself for being such a foolish suddenly... but his reaction was unbelievably uncanny!

It's normal to feel sad and gloomy all of a sudden to remember about the death of wife. It's normal to feel guilty from inside for not stopping herself from taking the crucial step of ending life. It's normal to have the grief of the death of first wife lifelong despite marrying again! But his eyes had something beyond those normal sadness, agony and guilt...and that is fear. A pure fear!

She was not wrong. His black intense orbs had got hazy with her each and every word. And from under the deep coat of haziness she could easily recognise the shadow reflecting from his pupils. And that shadow was made of little amount of hesitation and guilt blending along the large quantity of fear... the fear of a guilty who is caught red-handed after a crime!

But why? Why he is hiding? What is he hiding? From whom he is hiding?

Jalal sat on the sofa outside pressing the sinus with two fingers of hand. His heartbeat had been doubled; throat had dried up out of thirst suddenly. He tried to gather all his confidence together to get rid of this condition. Why he is frightened. What has happened? What has he done? What is he hiding? From whom he is hiding! The person who used to suspect him, from whom he has always has tried to hide his heart and mind, will never return! And this time she knows... she knows everything!

A very old picture of Ruqaiya suddenly flashed in front of eyes. A picture of a night... an intimate night... an intoxicating night! A night of war...

FLASHBACK:

There was the reunion party at evening. Perhaps the nostalgia with old friends, the touches of old happy memories turning into the precious sad ones and obviously the shower of plenty branded liquors had made him to fly in a happy land. Perhaps he had boozed a little, and the unusual intoxication, the beautiful night, the pleasure in the luxury of floating on the sea of sadness had warmed him up with passion, with wildness, with revengeful mentality... and that night became something more than the regular practices. While drawing Ruqaiya suddenly inside his bare chest like an addicted he had shot a question. "So madam, what did you get to know today evening? In the party? Do you suspect me to have an affair with Mrs Singhania who was talking around a lot? Or do you suspect Tanuja, with whom I started laughing suddenly? Or someone else... Maybe...maybe... Ohho! How can I forget! You have no fear from other women- your fright is only Jodha... right?"

"What's it Jalal!" She was weary and had dashed him. "Go away! Sleep!"

"That can't be true! You're not happy?" He had laughed out before kissing her neck. Clasping her waist with his arms he had started opening the buttons of her night-coat, his desire for her body had been mixed with the madness of pinching her with her own weapon... "Why? Maybe you had expected to meet her isn't it? So you came with me... not to meet with my friends... but to catch me red-handed!"

She didn't tell anything in protest; as she was never able to hide her venom of heart from the rest of world. In response she had just poured her face in his chest breathing deeply... her breath had a passion of possessiveness... a mad possessiveness. He hardly had tried to fathom that ever... he had pulled her chin and bit her lips wildly, as his manly desire was thirsty for a woman, but at the same time he was ready to fight with the same woman he was making love with fire of avenge! "You told me once that you are waiting to catch me red-handed right? What will you do if you actually catch me red-handed, Ruqaiya? Have you ever thought how would you live with that bare truth?" He tried to gear her up with laughter. "Will you leave me or kill me?"

She had clutched him tightly... Her nails had only left to tear his chests to bleed. In an uncanny whisper, like a possessed voice, she told... "I will neither kill you... nor leave you... I...I..."

FLASHBACK ENDED

She hadn't completed as both of them flowed with the tide of desire, and perhaps she herself had no answer that time... But she has shown what she would do... She left forever with victory...

"You took it wrong Ruqaiya! You understood it wrong! I never ever wanted to do that... You were wrong!" He desperately blubbered... too low to be heard by anyone!

"Jalal!" A soothing touch brought him back in real world. When he looked back, he saw everything has been changed abruptly, and Jodha, his love of life is standing behind with anxiety.

"I... I have work!" He wanted to go but she held his hand. "What has happened to you, tell me? Why are you so disturbed? Please share with me Jalal!" She requested tenderly, placing her palm on his cheek; but he harshly took that off. "You are tired. Take rest..."His voice was stating it clearly that he does not want her near. For the first time she heard him to be so rude with her.

"But Jalal unless and until you took off the burden from your heart you will..." she did a last trial, and she never ever expected the response from him that she got. "Enough!" He suddenly shouted out, as harsh as a slum-dweller. "Stop nagging behind me and get a job! I am not bound to answer you in every second understand?"

Jodha was staring at his raged eyes with hurt surprise... His voice was rising higher, so was the rudeness. "I said you to go. DIDN'T I??"

"Sorry!"

Perhaps he would continue his reasonless bashing, but something forcefully stopped his uncontrolled tongue, and that was the single word uttered by Jodha in a very measured and intense tone, full of gravity and hard to overlook! He was unable to look at her eyes by that time... He was feeling low in front of her personality; her one reluctant sorry' made him ashamed like hell. Her reaction was so different from the usual reaction he was used too! There was a time when he used to attack with all his strength and voice to dominate his wife's attitude, and today the same tactics made him embarrassed.

Jodha was going inside again without looking back holding the disgusted frown intact, Jalal held her hand from back. "Jodha..."

She did not reciprocate, but stopped. He came closer. "Sorry Jodha! I am actually... I am going through a lot of stress so my mood..." While trying to clarify his voice became vulnerable. "Don't take me wrong Jodha! Please!"

"Had I pressurised you too much to marry me Jalal? Was it a forceful decision of mine?" Suddenly Jodha asked. He could not answer, only gripped her hand!

"You should not have married me Jalal! Neither should have I return in your life! If you want, you can easily rectify the mistake." She went back inside the room, leaving the hold of Jalal's hand...

Thanks for the pm dear! OMG im speechless wow this story is so different but I LOVE IT👏 I love how you went out on the limb and really wrote something so unique! I really feel so bad for all characters, Jodha and Jalal were not able to marry at first therefore his wedding with Ruqaiya and yes I did feel bad for her too, on her death bed😭 The relationship she shared with Jalal was really so complicated but you did a fabulous job describing both Jalal and Ruqaiya's point of view! I wish Ruks had tried to be nicer but I think her jealousy really made her insecure which did not allow her to care for Jalal, and Jalal although he tried his best to be a dutiful husband the space in his heart for Jodha and Ruks constant jealousy and insecurity did not allow him to completely accept her hence the distance between the two!
One thing is not clear to me, is Jalal behind the death of Ruks😲? Jodha thought that "His black intense orbs had got hazy with her each and every word. And from under the deep coat of haziness she could easily recognise the shadow reflecting from his pupils. And that shadow was made of little amount of hesitation and guilt blending along the large quantity of fear... the fear of a guilty who is caught red-handed after a crime!"
Is that the guilt that is killing him and not allowing him to let go? I really hope that is not the case otherwise this will really keep eating him up, poor Jalal his condition is a nightmare!

Really feel bad how Jalal is ignoring Jodha and now she is really regretting her choice of marrying him but I feel she did the right thing, she knows Jalal needs someone and being his true love she cannot leave him in such a condition! I hope she stays strong and I know she will remain by his side! I loved the end how with Jodha's one little "Sorry" Jalal broke out of his rage, and loved the part where you explained how he would have stayed angry had Jodha yelled back as he had become so accustomed to Ruks back talk! That just shows the difference between the two woman, and I hope with Jodha's little differences compared to Ruks helps Jalal come over his grief!

This is the longest comment I have written haha but seriously its because I'm really loving this story! I know you will not disappoint Deb, you are an amazing writer, after this long separation and pain I know Jalal and Jodha will again have that undying love for one another they just have to face this obstacle together which will only make their love stronger❤️

Update soon cant wait to read more😳
