Bombay Vikings

The Bombay Vikings were formed in 1994 in Stockholm, Sweden. The Bombay Vikings consist of musicians Mats Nordenborg, Neeraj Shridhar and Oscar Soderberg . The band was born out of a common interest – a love for Indian melodies - be they in Hindi films or Classical Music.

In India Bombay Vikings shot to fame with the song Kya Soorat Hai a couple of years ago. An impressive remix of the original Zaroorat Hai, the new version topped the charts, thanks to some innovative Hinglish lyrics, a cool video and some impressive singing. A year later, Woh Chali followed — and became a huge hit and stayed on top for a remarkable number of weeks, though the song was much slower compared to Kya Soorat Hai. But Jambola made up for the loss and a surprise third hit from the album was Angel Eyes. In 2006, Bombay Vikings reached a top positions on the charts in India with Zara Nazron Se Kehdo, which was produced and mixed by Soundism.

Bombay Vikings is a reputed name in Indian pop with significant number of music albums, most of which are remix of the old Indian melodies.

WOH CHALI

Woh Chali Woh Chali Dekho Pyaar Ki Gali Use Roke Na Koi , Woh Chali Woh Chali

Na Na Na Meri Jaan,Dekho Jaana Na Waha Koi Pyaar Ka Lutera,Lute Na Meri Jaan.

Woh Chali Woh Chali,She's found the love that's real, Now her wounded heart is healed,Finally finally

Woh Chali Woh Chali, leavin all her tears behind Only loves on her mind,Finally Finally

Thou she tries but she cant hide All her joy wrapped up inside She cant wait to reveal,And tell you how she feels

Well this time it feels so right, There'll be no more lonesome nights Good times are here to stay Love will shine on every day.

Woh Chali Woh Chali,She's found the love that's real Now her wounded heart is healed,Finally Finally

Woh Chali Woh Chali, leavin all her tears behind Only loves on her mind,Finally Finally

In my heart there is some pain,Dont ask me why I cant explain May be I did love her too,now there's nothin I can do

On the other side of town, her love is waitin on As she's waivin me goodbye,I think my heart is gonna cry.

Woh Chali Woh Chali,She's found the love that's real Now her wounded heart is healed, finally finally

Woh Chali Woh Chali, leavin all her tears behind Only loves on her mind,Finally finally

Woh Chali Woh Chali Dekho Pyaar Ki Gali Use Roke Na Koi , Woh Chali Woh Chali

Na Na Na Meri Jaan,Dekho Jaana Na Waha Koi Pyaar Ka Lutera,Lute Naaaaaaaaa

Woh Chali Woh Chali,She's found the love that's real Now her wounded heart is healed,Finally Finally

Woh Chali Woh Chali, leavin all her tears behind Only loves on her mind,Finally Finally

Woh Chali Woh Chali,She's found the love that's real Now her wounded heart is healed,Finally Finally

Woh Chali Woh Chali, leavin all her tears behind Only loves on her mind,Finally Finally

My most favourtite is Woh Chali. The song is a remix sure but has a softness to it. Thats a big plus point of Bombay Vikings. They don't indulge into too much of drum beats and all. They try to keep the music very mellowed.

Thanks Bobda and Ron for the links.

The Viking who trills
Neeraj Sridhar may have hit the right note by squeezing new lyrics into old tunes, but his true love is jazz, R&B, and blues

Neeraj Sridhar: "Families should be able to watch my music videos."
ISN'T IT wonderful how an old tune just plays on in our heads till it bursts forth as a happy hum? Off-key or tuneful, everyone's loves doing a "la-la". And lyrics? Oh, just make them up on the way... Maybe you'll even cut a record some day. Well, the Bombay Vikings did. Neeraj Sridhar, the voice and composing brain behind hits like 'Kya soorat hai', 'Woh chali' and 'Hawa mein udti jaaye' thinks nothing is more sacred than the tune of a song. "Lyrics," he says, "must be simple and catchy... I use the spoken language of today, not any high-funda poetry." Although he vehemently opposes calling his modus operandi 'reverse remixing', he does just that— fits in new lyrics in a much-loved Bollywood number. Lines like "Kya soorat hai, baby! No one's so sexy, in the whole galaxy/ You make my heart go beating haarderr... " may sound corny when you read them here, but sung in tune, they actually work. Remix king At Zero-G last Friday to promote his new single, "Aa raha hoon main", Neeraj talks of how he changed from being a little Jalandhar boy to the spiky-haired, junk jewellery-sporting remix king. "I moved in with my brother in Sweden when I was just 12. I did some studying, but all I was thinking of 24/7 was music." Having grown up listening to Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Rod Stewart, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, it wasn't a surprise he soon found himself as part of a number of Swedish bands. "Most people in Stockholm didn't know me as Neeraj. I was just 'that Indian chap'. But when they realised that I was as good as any Swedish singer, they accepted me." Today, his concerts are a rage not just amongst Indians, but also amongst "blacks, whites, Chinese... they're all there". At 16, he "slogged like anything to buy a guitar". That meant three months of hard labour in a factory that made plastic files. "I could pick up songs very easily by ear, but couldn't read notations for the guitar. For that matter, I still can't read music. That doesn't stop me from playing the keyboard either!" Swedish connection Bombay Vikings is one unique name for a band from Sweden, you say. "Why?" ripostes Neeraj, "Vikings is because of the Swedish connection, and since I started the band, I told those fellows — see, as the leader of the band, I say we have an Indian element. And Bombay is the most happening city, so we chose it. OK, OK, I tried Bangalore, but the word Bombay itself has the sound of a bomb on it! But Bangalore is where we began because the video of "Kya soorat hai", our big break, was shot right here in this city." Although it is Neeraj who now does all the composing, he says he doesn't want to be cut off from his original band. "Also, a name like Neeraj Sridhar will definitely flop." Although many of us know and love Bombay Vikings for their remixes, Neeraj says all he wants to play night and day is jazz, R&B and blues. "I try to slip them into my albums along with the remixes. Music today has become a product. It must be packaged and sold with make-up." So would he rather be giving the market what it wants than follow his heart? "Oh no! I love Lataji, Kishoreji and all the amazing old numbers. But times have changed. Some technology improved, lyrics redone to match today's lingo, and there you have it — good music that will sell and, most importantly, be respected. And I do ensure that I slip in a few original compositions in every album. You gotta do it on the sly, or it won't sell." 'Decent videos' Asked about his music videos, he says: "In my contracts itself, I specify that there must be only one or two music videos per album. No overexposure. And the models in my videos must be decent. A whole family must sit together and be able watch it. And about that "Chhod do anchal" video, let me make it clear that I was not part of it. What is all this? Two-three half-naked women dancing around... sheer nonsense!" More than anything else, Neeraj wants people to respect his music. "Many musicians use private albums as a step to film music. I also have two offers to compose for movies, but I'm not jumping at it. Though half the world thinks I'm a newcomer, I've been in this business for ages. I'll always give respect to the music I make today. Films can wait another two years."

Bombay Vikings are back
Two years and three albums down, 'Bombay Vikings' is a name to reckon with. After songs like 'Kya soorat hai' and 'Woh chali' became hits, it is 'Hawa mein udati jaaye' that is now making waves.
'BOMBAY VIKINGS' shot to fame with the song Kya Soorat Hai a couple of years ago. An impressive remix of the original Zaroorat Hai, the new version topped the charts, thanks to some innovative 'Hinglish' lyrics, a cool video and some impressive singing. A year later, Woh Chali followed — and became a huge hit and stayed on top for a remarkable number of weeks, though the song was much slower compared to Kya Soorat Hai. But Jambola made up for the loss and a surprise third hit from the album was Angel Eyes. By now, people began relating to Bombay Vikings' unique style of taking an old song, changing the lyrics entirely, and making a new song, full of attitude and some crazy lyrics. When news of a third album began doing the rounds, the obvious question was: Why not a break from remixes and something original for a change? To this Neeraj 'viking' Shridar's answer was, "I want the masses to relate to my style of music and if you want to reach the masses, you need to keep the music simple. In short, my music is for people who want to chill-out." Well, that sounds convincing enough. Neeraj has spent the bulk of his life outside the country, and this is evident in his music as well. His albums usually show influences from Europe, Canada and places West. In fact, it is surprising to know that this man began his career as a baggage loader at Scandinavian Airlines, soon getting promoted to the post of Deputy Officer. That was long before he started his career producing ad jingles, soon discovered his passion for music, came to India and formed 'Bombay Vikings'. Come to think of it, the whole concept of remixing in the country is changing today, thanks to bands like 'Bombay Vikings', 'Instant Karma', 'Partners In Rhyme' and the rest. Bringing a lot of Western dance and trance influences into Indian music, these bands are a refreshing change from the run-of-the-mill remix albums. In fact, Instant Karma's latest album features some innovative remixing of songs like Meri Soni and Aaja Piya. Coming back to Bombay Vikings, the new album is called Hawa Mein Udati Jaaye (Universal Music; CD Rs. 125; cassette Rs. 50), recalling a famous line from a song in the classic movie Barsaat and the title single is already gaining fast popularity. A very catchy tune, added to it some foot-tapping accomplishments and some 'bindaas' lyrics makes it a very infectious number. The second track, Call Me Up has loads of energy with a 'trancey' feel to it. I Believe and You and I fall along the same lines — and sound quite similar too. After listening to these songs, you tend to feel that Neeraj should consider more remixes in each album rather than only one or two of them. A surprise element of the album is Tera Mera Pyaar Sanam, originally called Woh Tere Pyar Ka Gham in the movie My Love. Falguni Pathak teams up with Neeraj this time — and gives an interesting 'jugalbandi' effect to the song. I Got To Get Loved By You has an interesting fusion of some hardcore dance and a 'bhangra'-style beat in the background — resulting in a 'stop-and-go' kind of thing and Dancing All Night has a 'latino' feel to it. Look for the video of this one soon. Well, the Viking has come a long way — and is sure to leave a mark this time, hitting soon at your favourite disco — and the corner 'chai' shop as well.

Thanx Bobji and Ron for the wondeful post and videos.
Though I basically detest remixes,I like most of Bombay Vikings remixes..They sound refreshing and different...Two reasons probably are that he chooses relatively good songs and he doesn't make the remix sound too loud and jazzy.Normally in remixes, the rhythm and beats are so loud that the drums are all one can hear ...But in his remixes we can hear the music, the singers' voice(isn't that unique for a remix? 😉 ) and also some additional lyrics that sound refreshing and cute..So overall impact...an A from me 😊 .Other than the popular ones like kya soorat hai & woh chali,I like 'zara nazron se kehdo ji' too from his remixes.
