CHAPTER 2. THE DEADLY ACCIDENT AND THE DREAM
"No! No! No! You are not getting it!", Maan spat in annoyance as he tried to explain to his client how the finished building would look from the inside. They were standing on the wooden lift of the incomplete building at the height of sixteenth floor. All around them workers were doing their work. It was the next morning after the car accident and Maan was at one of his construction sites where the client was also on the visit.
Maan explained once again the floor plan all the while praying to any deity who would hear to give him some patience to deal with the obtuse client. Am I speaking in Greek that this fellow can't understand? God save me from idiots!
The client left the lift and walked into the building inspecting the work around him. Not that the idiot would understand anything, Maan grumbled in his mind as he glared at the back of his client's head. As far as the client was concerned, even if the workers filled a whole room with cement the client will simply nod and walk away. Why this fool wants to inspect the work of his building when he does not understand a single nuance of it was something Maan could not understand. Let the Professionals do their work, you oaf! You go and focus on your money. Maan spat in his mind and pressed the lever that took the lift down.
The lift started to go down slowly and then suddenly stopped at the third floor. Maan frowned. What is wrong with the lift? But before he could check or even get out of the lift and onto the floor and the lift jerked and suddenly fell down at a neck breaking speed. Maan did not even have the time to scream. He simply felt the fall, a blinding pain at the back of his head and then nothing but darkness.
Maan could see nothing but darkness. Where was he? He heard beeping noise and would have smirked if he could have moved his facial muscle. I am at the hospital! Of course I am! Where would I be after that fall? He heard murmur of voices but then his conscious slipped away and he knew no more.
Maan did not know how much time passed since last time he heard the beeping noise. Once again he heard the murmurings and beepings. But this time the voice started to clear and he heard his Daadima ask somebody about Maan's health. The Doctor, who seemed to be British by his accent, explained that miraculously, Maan survived from the 3 floor fall with only head injury at the back of his head. And that also did no internal damage as seen in several scans. Daadima asked next about Maan not walking up even though two days had passed since the fall and the Doctor explained that the trauma must have affected him mentally too and his brain was simply recuperating before it came back to life. Doctor assured Daadima that there was nothing to worry about and walked away. Maan heard his Daadima sigh and say, "Rab Di Meher hai, humaara beta bach gaya!" Maan did not know that he had actually smiled at his Daadima's words as he fell asleep again.
Next time Maan woke up, it seemed to be evening and his Daadima sat nearby praying. Maan was finally able to open his eyes and he looked towards his Daadima.
"Daadima!", he whispered and Daadima looked up, "Maan bete!", she gasped and got up to call the Doctor. The Nurses arrived just as Maan signaled for some water. The Nurse helped him drink few sips and then the Doctor arrived and started asking questions about pain and sensations on his body parts. Maan answered every question dutifully and even wiggled his toes and fingers when asked by the Doctor. Soon the Doctor left after informing them that Maan was alright but had to stay another two days for observation before he could leave. Maan had grumbled at that. That meant he would spend the morning of his birthday in the ward. Daadima had chuckled at that.
Soon the grandmother grandson duo was left alone and Maan asked Daadima how many were injured and how many died due to the lift falling. Maan was happy to hear from Daadima that no one died and there were only one or two people with minor injuries. Maan smiled, "Thank God! No one died!"
"Yes Thank God!", Daadima murmured, "But for how long?"
"What?", Maan asked surprised by Daadima's words, "What are talking about Daadima?"
"Kya? Kuch nahi Maan bete! Bas aise hi!", Daadima replied with a polite smile on her face and looked away.
Maan frowned at his Daadima. The only time Daadima looked away while talking to him was when she was lying! What is Daadima hiding from me?
"Daadima! You are hiding something from me! What is it?", Maan spoke in stern voice.
Daadima shook her head but Maan was relentless. He badgered her again and again till she gave up.
"Kya kahun Maan bete! Kaise samjhaaun tumhein?", Daadima asked with pain on her face.
Maan smiled softly, "Daadima! Mujhe bataayiye toh sahi! I will find solution to your every problem, I promise!"
Daadima finally explained to him about how she had gone to Panditji to show his Kundali after his parents' accident and what all the Panditji had explained to her.
"WHAT?", Maan roared, "What rubbish are you speaking? Divya shakti? Supernatural? What the hell! Daadima! Are you out of your mind?"
"Dekho Maan!", Daadima glared at him, "I don't care whether you believe in this or not. But I know. Yeh buri shakti achchi shakti sab exist karti hain! Hum in sab mein maante hain! Aur agar yeh sach nahi hote toh aapke saath yeh haadse kyun hote?"
"Oh for God's sake Daadima, what haadse? Ek car accident hua because I was sleepy and the lift was faulty so I fell down, big deal! They were just accidents!", Maan growled.
"Achcha? Accidents? Toh tumhe gaadi chalaate waqt neend kaise aayi? That never happened in your life Maan! You have never felt sleepy enough to fall asleep on the wheel!", Daadima spat at him.
Maan rolled his eyes, "Then someone must have drugged me Daadima! That's it! Anyone could have drugged me at the Awards Daadima! You know its possible!"
Daadima was loosing her patience and now stood up, her body language displaying anger, "Achcha? And what about the yellow duppatta wearing girl? And she luring you to your almost death on the terrace? If I hadn't followed you, you would have died! Maan I had enough! It is obvious that whatever is protecting you, is unable to do it anymore! I won't take anymore risks regarding your health! Jis din tum discharge hoge, usi din hum Panditji se milne jaayenge! Ab wahi koi upaay nikaalenge!"
Daadima huffed and stormed out of the room. Maan growled in annoyance and slapped his bed. Damn! Daadima and her rubbish beliefs!
"Mohi", a voice came and he looked around. He saw that he was in some sort of field with a tree in the middle. Hiding partially behind the tree was a girl dressed in blue salwar kameez. He could not see her face clearly as everything around him was blurry.
Again a girl's voice called, "Mohi!" He realised that it was the girl behind the tree calling his name. He smiled. Toh tu etthe chupi hai!
He lunged forward and grabbed her hand.
"Ai ai! Kinna jor se pakda hai!", the girl whined and he raised an eyebrow.
She struggled to get her hand away but his grip was too tight for her.
"Arre! Chodna! Mennu dukh raha hai!", the girl complained and he smirked.
"Galti teri hai Soniyo! Kisne bola tha tujhe mennu Mohi bulaane ko!", he narrowed his eyes.
The girl huffed, "O ho! Mohi ko Mohi na bulaaun toh kya bulaaun?"
He turned serious, "Mera naam Mohi nahi kudiye! Mohinderjeet hai! Mennu tu Mohinderjeet de naam se bulaaya kar! Samjhi?", he gave her a stern look.
She wrenched her hand away and put her hands on her hips. Her voice took on a warning tone, "Oye Khotya! Tu kuch bhi keh le! Mennu toh tennu Mohi hi bulaana hai!", then she softened and spoke in playful tone, "Kyunki tu toh mera Mohi hai! Duniya ke liye tu Mohinderjeet hoga! Mere liye toh tu Mohi hai! Iss kamli Mahi da kamla Mohi!", she placed her arms around his neck and he placed his hand around her waist. He could not see her face but he could sense that she was smiling. Her smile brought the smile to his face and it broadened when she leaned forward and whispered in his ear, "Mahi da Mohi!"
He blinked and when he opened his eyes he was shocked to see nothing but darkness. He seemed to be lying on some bed. He woke up with jerk. Mahi kitthe hai? He tried to look around in the darkness.
"MAHI!", he screamed and suddenly the lights came on.
"Mr. Khurana!"
"Mr. Maan!"
The voices echoed around him as coat wearing people entered the room. He blinked. He was Maan! Maan Singh Khurana! But wasn't he Mohinderjeet few seconds ago? He frowned in confusion. He could not understand a single thing of what happened. The Doctor asked him few questions but Maan was too confused to reply. Then he was given some injection and Maan's world returned to darkness.
Next morning when Maan woke up, he was back to normal. But the dream remained in his head. He had many dreams in so many years. But none of them were like this. Most of them were normal dreams that normal people had. But nothing was so clear and affected him so much that he woke up associating himself with another name. Mahi da Mohi! The words echoed around him and Maan tried to make the sense of it.
"Maan! Maan bete!", his Daadima's voice came and Maan looked up from his breakfast.
His Daadima walked forward and hugged him. Maan hugged her back, her arms making him feel calm. The whole dream thing had left him confused and feeling lost and it was Daadima's hug that seemed to ground him and make him feel like he was Maan Singh Khurana. As they pulled away, Maan wondered why he felt so disassociated from his own identity by just one dream?
Daadima started to speak breaking Maan out of his thoughts, "Kaise ho Maan bete? Doctor ne mujhe bataaya ki kal raat ko tum bade hil gaye the? What had happened Maan?"
Maan shook his head, "Nothing Daadima! Just a bad nightmare!"
Daadima nodded and both elapsed into silence. And then Daadima suddenly started fidgeting and looking around nervously. Maan frowned at her actions and grabbed Daadima's fidgeting hands, "Daadima! Is everything alright?"
Daadima nodded but remained uncomfortable.
Maan sighed, "Then what is it that you are not letting me know?", he adopted a tender expression hoping that his expression would encourage Daadima to speak her heart out.
The idea worked as Daadima sighed and spoke up, "I did something that I am not sure you would like. So I don't know how to break the news to you!"
Maan smiled, "Daadima! Whatever you do, you will never make me angry. I might be annoyed but I will not hate you. Ever. So tell me, what did you do?"
Daadima hesitated a little but when Maan patted her hand in comfort she blurted out, "I took an appointment with the Panditji for tomorrow, right after your discharge!"
When Maan did not react to her words, Daadima started to get nervous, "Dekho Maan! Yahaan bahut kuch ho raha hai jo humaare samajh se baahar hai! Behtar hoga ki..."
Maan cut her off, "Daadima! I think your decision is right!"
"Kya?", Daadima looked at her grandson in shock.
Maan sighed, "Even I want some answers Daadima! Things have happened that makes me question a lot. I want answers for those questions! And finding it through this Panditji might be one way to make it!"
Especially why I think of myself as some guy called Mohi sometimes! Maan thought. And why have I been seeing this Mahi so much recently when I don't even know her?
And that was another chapter! Did you like it? Let me know!
Thank you, take care and have fun,
Kalpana
