Today I would say CVs did a brilliant job in presenting to us the refined juvenile justice law. The under age criminal in Nirbhaya case had done the crime of an adult and what did our law do to him. Treated him as a child.
If our so human right activists could listen to Hanuman today. Hanuman tells to Akshaya he is a child he doesnt know about crime and punishment, doesnt know about dharma, adharma so go back. Even Sita says you have not done any crime , why are you supporting your father's crime.

What does Akshaya call Sita. A dasi. A slave and asks her to behave like one. This is where his half knowledge comes. Sita is not inside the palace. He doesnt know no one could go near her. She was bought there by treachery. She is a chaste woman.

And Hanuman says he will be punished. And he fights. Sita says not to kill him. Hanuman says if he asks forgiveness to Sita he will spare Akshaya. Idiot Akshaya in his need to get identity keeps Sita as bait. Only a weak man will keep a woman as bait. And Hanuman plays well and this time doesnt spare him and gives him death penalty.

A child doesnt know the rules. And the child has to behave like one. If you doesnt know rule ask direction. But if you blindly follow some theories the end result is what Akshaya got and it should be like that also.

Rightly said Shruthi. Every criminal should be punished according to the nature of their crime, not according to their age or even gender. A woman when she kills someone for her greed in the name of dowry or a girl child because of her gender bias, should be subjected to the same punishment as a man. The same rule applies to a youth too. Akshay kumar supported his father's adharma for his own reasons and had to be punished. But as Sita says she feels sad for a mother's grief more than his demise. It would be such a beautiful society if we could really destroy the evil in a person without killing that person...

@Savitha that is what Ram does in Ayodhya. He kills the evil, but Lanka is beyond control. I mean beyond redemption.

So true Shruthi. punishment should be based on the magnitude of the crime and not the age. Akshay asked for it. He turned a blind eye to his mother's pleas because he wanted to prove himself to his father. If he respected his mother he would never have stooped so low as to insult a woman and keep her as a bait. He never understood the situation and went there with half knowledge.
If age is given consideration irrespective of the crime it will be exploited by the wrong crowd. Kids will be used for selling drugs. kidnapping and what not.

@Geena already it is happening. Kids studying in 8th, 9th are used as drug peddlers. There was even a movie in Malayalam Manikkyakallu that dealt with this issue.

I really agree with this post of yours, Shruti.

It irritates me to no end when I see adolescents in our society get a weak punishment based on their age, when they commit crimes many adults would never think of doing.

If youth behave like adults and do crimes like adults, then they should be punished like adults. That is the only way to teach humankind that it doesn't matter what age you are, what gender you are, what race or caste you are, how wealthy you are, how educated you are...

Irrespective of anything, crime is crime and everyone should face consequences of their actions equally.

I am so grateful that karma is not based on any of this, like the terrible justice system in our society. Karma is based on actions, regardless of race, gender and age.

A person who commits crime will be punished by God himself, if not the lawmakers in our country. If he is so stupid to think he'll get away just because of his age, he will soon realize that under God's rule, everyone is equal.

Yes Janaki. Only how many understand the punishment of Karma. Look at Ravan yesterday. Bring the criminal. Who is the criminal. Hanuman or Ravan himself.
Mandodari rightly shouts her son's killer is not the vanar but Ravan himself. She understands, but Ravan fails to understand.

Even Gandhari doesnt understand why her son got punished and curses Krishna as the cause of war. Did Krishna drag Panchali to sabha and insulted her.

Our society has misplaced sympathy with perpetuates of crime and when a criminal is punished all crocodile tears come out.

Omg, my blood boils in regard to Gandhari many times. She placed the blame on everyone but her sons. She cursed Krishna, she burned Yudhisthir through her gaze, she even blamed Draupadi for cursing the Kuru dynasty.

I absolutely hate how she asks Draupadi to forgive her sons.

As a woman, how can she ask this of her? 🤢 Does her motherhood make her so blind that she cannot see anything besides her sons' welfare, even when they committed such ill deeds?

I think part of the reason why our society is so lenient against youth who commit crimes is because their parents defend them and protect them from the law by hiring expensive lawyers and spending money so their kid stays out of jail.

Did you hear about a recent rape attack against a college student in US? It was all over the news for a while.

A woman was out partying late and got drunk. She was walking home unsteadily and one of her classmates who was also at the party followed her. He raped her and ran away when a male student saw the attack and ran forward to help the girl.

The rapist was a sports player and his father was some bigshot wealthy guy. He made controversial statements in court defending his son, saying that he should be in jail for only 6 months and not have life imprisonment. He said that his son shouldn't lose years of his life for "20 minutes of action". 🤢 In the end, the father succeeded in convincing the judge and his son was let off with a mere 6 month jail time.

It is because of such parents who defend their children's crimes that so many youth are continuing to commit horrid crimes.

Parental love should never come in the way of love. Every parent should teach their children to be on the right path and when they falter, they should let their child face the consequences. That's the only way they'll ever learn.

No Janaki thanks for sharing. But rape is just an action right. Our super star told after hectic shooting he feels like a raped woman.
Also I am just hearing the news of a brutal murder of a 11 year old Keralite boy in Delhi. Parents were trying to pass the criminals as juveniles. But it seems the fake birth certificate is caught and one of them is being sent to adult jail.

Parents try to protect one crime, but they dont understand unless the child experiences the punishment of the crime right way, they will become psychotic criminals.

Sometimes people tell look what happened to Sita when she crossed Lakshman Rekha to keep women under control, but no one talks what happened to Lanka and Ravan for touching Sita.

And this is where I love the woman of Ramayana whether it is Tara or Mandodari. Tara walks her son Angad in the path of dharma understanding the punishment her husband got was for the adharma he did.
Same with Mandodari. She never blames Ram for the loss of her husband and kids. She understands they got punished because of their karma. Even she doesnt show any animosity to Vibishan.

Sita raises Luv-Kush without any animosity to their father in the path of dharma understanding her husband's duty as a king and the rules of Ayodhya.

These woman had self respect, but they were feminine too. Unlike the doormats of present TV shows who are sadly compared to Sita.

Awesome discussion triggered by a lovely post Shruthi.
Our society treats issues and events with selective judgement. If the wrong doer is mine or connected with those i know i have to treat him differently seems to be the unwritten law. In a country where we believe there was a Manu and sibhi who meted justice when a case was presented by beast and bird the fact that we have separate codes of justice in operation seems to indicate how we are insensitive. If Gandari can grieve hat all her sons were killed so too was Draupadi. She lost her sons she was humiliated and not a word of censure was raised. When those with money get away for offences be it due to drunken driving or other forms of abuse...when they can use brute force and get away without even a warning, i can only think that relative justice is what is prevelant whether it is in our epics or when the Indian Penal code is is vogue.
