After seeing many members ask about the finer details of the story - I decided to make a post to better fill in the blanks.
As result, here is the plot summarized for those who would like to better understand season 2 AKA the backstory, blood feud's and family tree behind RajNi:
❤️❤️❤️
Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani started off as a period drama originally set in the 1940s.
The story begins when the then widower Rana Indravadhan Singh Deo (Rana Ji) returns to India after having fought in World War 2. Upon his arrival the audience quickly realizes that there is a plot at foot to kill him.
His wife Queen Sulakshana had died years earlier in a terrible car crash that resulted in her car going over a cliff (or so everyone was led to believe). Distraught over her death Rana Ji (Rani's father) has resolved never to love again. He lives on the edge not understanding why death won't take him the way it had Sulakshana and retreats further and further into himself. His mother (Rajmata Priyamvada) isn't able to reason with him (they share a very strained relationship), except for Rana Ji's step-grandmother (Badi Rani Maa) -- for whom he deeply respects.
The audience quickly learns that the Raj Mahal is a dark and twisted place that houses dark secrets and lies. It is a battle ground for the wicked. No one can be trusted.
Despite the grandeur of the palace and the rich lifestyles that the Royals lead, we quickly learn that the Raj Mahal is heavily in debt as Rajmata owes a substantial amount of money to Amerkot's richest merchant Seth Govind Das.
All the while, the story revolves around our protagonist Rani's mother - Gayatri-Devi.
Gayatri-Devi is carefree, bubbly, talkative, a child at heart, loves to read and play with her little niece and nephew and is a true dreamer. Her dreamer nature is a complete contrast to Rana Ji's more practical one.
Gayatri-Devi is Seth Govind Das's youngest child and only daughter. Gayatri has two older brothers', whom are both married; her sister-in-laws sometime take advantage of her naivet by either getting her into trouble or by tricking her into serving them the way Cinderella would for her evil stepsisters. Gayatri isn't as naive as they think her to be but still serves them regardless out of love.
However, despite Gayatri's carefree nature we quickly learn that she's sort of cursed - or more specifically - her fate is. It is written in her kundali that she is ill-fated -- a fact that proves true when her arranged childhood fianc dies in his youth. As a result, most people in her town think she will end up a spinster (even her own family fears so). However, regardless of the fate written for her Gayatri-Devi continues to dream big.
As destiny would have it Gayatri keeps having random run-ins with Rana Ji. Rana Ji is oblivious to her feelings and in most instances pays little attention to her very fleetingly as he is usually very preoccupied, lost in thoughts of Sulakshana. Despite his resistance he always has a habit of turning around to stare back at her after every encounter. And later, he accidentally mistakes her for a poor villager do to an outing gone horribly wrong that almost resulted in her drowning -- but she was later saved by Rana Ji.
Smitten with the King, Gayatri falls more and more in love with him every time she meets him, while he falls deeper into confusion over her true identity. She ultimately resolves to write him a letter under the misconception that he knows who she is and how she feels.
Her letter however falls into Rajmata's hands. Rajmata instructs her trusty handmaiden Yashoda to investigate Gayatri-Devi and the duo learn all about Gayatri's ill-fated reputation. Unable to pay Seth Govind Das the money owed Rajmata strikes a deal with him instead: absolve her debts and in return she will make his daughter the Queen of Amerkot.
After much internal struggle on Seth Govind Das's part he ultimately agrees - believing that the deal will be in Gayatri's best interest considering that at that very moment Gayatri's alliance was being finalized with a man older than her own father! Weighing the options her father believed that she would be happier with Rana Ji for he had learned from Rajmata that his daughter had developed feelings for the King (via the letter).
Gayatri was on cloud 9 after learning about the proposal from the palace -- misunderstanding that Rana Ji had read her letter and had accepted her. Her father hid the nature of the deal thinking that Rana Ji knew the finer details of it all. However, due to the earlier misunderstandings he had developed over Gayatri's identity and also due to his refusal to move on from Sulakshana -- Rana Ji began to feel trapped and began to misunderstand - seeing Gayatri as a gold digger - someone whom must have always eyed the Throne and had plotted her marriage to him with her father from the very start.
Instead of guiding and helping Rana Ji clear his misunderstandings - Badi Rani Maa helped to fuel his confusion; secretly plotting to stop the wedding. No wedding, meant no wife - which meant no legit future heirs to claim the Throne.
Badi Rani Maa's many attempts to stop their wedding fails and Rana Ji and Gayatri marry. During the ceremony however, he purposely doesn't apply sindoor - an act that goes unnoticed by the wedding guests given that Gayatri's face had been veiled at the time. A clearly frazzled Gayatri tells herself he must not have realized that he hadn't done so and plans to have him fulfill the ritual later once they're alone.
After much kafuffle and stalling, Gayatri and Rana Ji's suhag raat is finally set for a week later. After having been unable to openly talk with him during the week - Gayatri readies herself and hopes that he will finally apply her sindoor. Rana Ji however, unleashes all his rage on her instead. His anger is tenfold after seeing her in Sulakshana's wedding dress (Badi Rani Maa and Kokila switched the dress Rajmata had given her with Sulakshana's). Unable to make sense of what has happening Gayatri runs from the Palace and collapses outside in the rain.
Rana Ji brings her back in.
Feeling alone in the Palace Gayatri's solace comes in the form of Swarnalekha (Lovey's mother). The two are BFF's. They're closer than that. They're practically sisters. And Gayatri's biggest ally is her mother-in-law Rajmata.
After much back and forth - Gayatri openly declares to Rana Ji that he will love her by Diwali, and that he himself will finally fill her maang with sindoor. Her challenge slowly but surely is realized. Rana Ji confesses his love - however before he can fill her maang Sulakshana makes her come back.
Rana Ji is understandably torn between both women.
It quickly becomes apparent that Sulakshana no longer acts like her old self - and as the audience soon learns Sulakshana isn't Sulakshana at all, but rather an imposter wearing a face mask! - a street dancer named Jhumki that Badi Rani Maa has hired to stall RaGa's union.
It is revealed that Badi Rani Maa had killed Sulakshana. The real Sulakshana's skeleton lies in an abandoned storeroom within the Palace.
Jhumki is ultimately proved as a fraud by Gayatri and Rajmata and Rana Ji punishes her by sentencing her to the dungeons (he did try to shoot her, but Gayatri stopped him from committing an act that he would never be able to come back from).
After having failed with Jhumki - Badi Rani Maa again plots but this time she tries to make it seem as if Gayatri has gone insane. Gayatri finally grows suspicious of Badi Rani Maa and is horrified to learn about her misdeeds. Rana Ji however refuses to believe the worst of his step-grandmother and so Gayatri (along with the help of Rajmata) fakes her death and orchestrates a plan that shows Badi Rani Maa's true nature.
Gayatri's plan is successful and Badi Rani Maa plays into her hands and exposes her true face by making a play for the Throne.
Unable to sentence the woman who helped raise him - to death, Rana Ji instead banishes her from Amerkot. Badi Rani Maa warns that he just made a big mistake and that this time when she returns there will be hell to pay.
Badi Rani Maa has made it her mission in life to acquire the Throne, not caring who she hurts in the process to attain it. Her trademark "sorry" makes viewers want to rip out their own hair.
The show plays with the idea that she may truly be a witch - but the truth of that is yet to be seen. She has however had once told Jeevan: "My age reflects how wise I am. Think of the biggest number you know, and then add 100 to it and you still would never be able to reach half of my age."
Badi Rani Maa's back story is unclear given that she was the one narrating it at the time. Considering that she is a master manipulator her back story should be taken with a grain of salt. The story itself was told by her after she had been finally caught for her misdeeds before her exile. Consequently, according to her: she was a servant in the Palace. Rana Ji's grandfather had taken a liking to her and had forced himself on her, which in turn resulted in the birth of her son, Chandravadan. She somehow was given the status of Second Wife (the same way Jeevan's (Jeeves) mother Rageshwari currently has) and her son Chandravadan was Rana Ji's grandfather's first born. However, due to the fact that Badi Rani Maa was the Second Wife meant that Chandravadan would not be able to ascend the Throne given that the honour to do so is reserved only for the children of the First Wife.
As a result, Badi Rani Maa, her son Kunwar Chandravadan, her daughter-in-law Kunwarani Kokila, and her grandson Choti Kunwar Lakshyaraj are the ones revealed who wish to harm Rana Ji.
In addition to trying to kill Rana Ji - the evil foursome have made the life of their bahu Choti Kunwarani Swarnalekha's life a living hell. Swarna (Lovey's mother) is married to Lakshyaraj, but the two of them share no relationship given the fact that her husband is gay. Lakshyaraj is quite bitter to her - openly flaunting his many male lovers in her face and abusing her constantly by screaming at her and beating her basically for existing. His father, Kunwar Ji seems embarrassed by his son's sexual orientation but at the same time seems more angered by the fact that because Lakshyaraj is gay - he won't do the needful and provide an heir to strengthen their family line. Frustrated by the fact that Lakshyaraj refuses to get close to Swarnalekha - Chandravadan and Kokila seek the help of the reputable Casanova Cheetah (aka Laakhan) to seduce Swarna and get her pregnant, in hopes of passing the child off as their heir. Cheetah agrees to help them, but ultimately falls for Swarna in the process. Swarna in turn returns his feelings but still remains faithful to her husband Lakshyaraj. As a result, Laakhan (Lovey's father) keeps trying to find ways to stall Chandravadan and Kokila's plans as he cannot take advantage of Swarnalekha. Lakshyaraj in the meantime grows more and more jealous by the obvious bond that exists between Swarna and Laakhan. Laakhan eventually leaves the Palace as a heartbroken Swarna watches him go.
With Fake Sulakshana gone, Rana Ji and Gayatri-Devi see the entry of another villain in their - this time in the form of Avdesh Singh Chauhan (Jeevan's uncle/Rageshwari's brother).
Avdesh hails from an old Royal rival blood line. Amerkot had once belonged to his family - but Rana Ji's ancestor had won it in a duel. Avdesh challenges Rana Ji to a duel, because as Royal Tradition dictates - each generation from his family line has the right to do so. Rana Ji accepts and the two duel.
In the end, Avdesh loses because he gets easily distracted by Gayatri - for whose beauty he has now become obsessed with. It also becomes apparent to the audience that Avdesh is very unstable. He (along with his twin sister Rageshwari) has killed everyone in their entire family in order to attain more status and wealth. He also wears a vile of his sister's blood around his neck, because...they are just that close.
Rageshwari eventually makes her entry to Amerkot and plots with Avdesh to break RaGa up so that Avdesh can have Gayatri all to himself. During his pursuit to make this happen Rajmata starts behaving erratically and later seems to have taken Avdesh's side as she starts to side with him for everything.
We soon learn that Rajmata harbours a terrible secret and the reason that she has come to favour Avdesh is because Avdesh has begun to blackmail her having warned her that he knows all about the terrible truth that she's been hiding. In truth, Avdesh knows nothing but is simply playing her like a puppet to get what he wants.
A new villain - Sartaj enters the story and we quickly learn that Rajmata has been paying him in secret for a number of years. The reason for it is shocking: Rajmata's BIG secret is: Rana Ji is not her son! In a flashback we learn that during a storm Rajmata had gone into labour. The closest place to seek refuge had been a brothel. Rajmata gave birth in the brothel but sadly her baby was stillborn.
At the same time, a prostitute had given birth - labour had taken its toll and she died. Sartaj (a ruthless thief) who was a frequent customer was revealed to be the baby's father. Disgusted by the child and refusing to see his value, Sartaj ended up throwing the baby across the room only for him to land in Rajmata's hand.
The connection Rajmata felt with the baby was undeniable and she took him in as her own - Sartaj however, blackmailed her with this and demanded that if she were to keep the child then every year she was required to pay him the baby's weight in gold every year. And so the baby she took in was revealed to be Rana Ji.
Every year Rajmata's trusty handmaiden delivered the required gold to Sartaj without fail. The reason for Sartaj's sudden appearance after all these years is revealed to be because he hadn't received his usual payment. The reason being - Yashoda never showed up.
Why did Yashoda never show up? Kokila had killed her in a fit of rage.
At the same time, Badi Rani Maa makes her re-entry. She is rushed to the Palace out of the blue - seemingly on her death bed. Her last wish is to die in the Palace. Rana Ji reluctantly obliges, but mentally notes that despite this act of kindness - he hasn't forgiven nor forgotten all that she has done. He vows to keep an eye on her.
As expected, Badi Rani Maa's re-entry was an act - having drank a potion to make her appear ill, she quickly takes advantage and hides her motives while the other villains circle: with Avdesh becoming a nuance, and Rageshwari lying that Sartaj had raped her - Rana Ji and Gayatri become focused on the bigger problems at hand, and Badi Rani Maa slips through the cracks to plot a bigger scheme.
Rajmata soon confesses the truth to Gayatri: that Rana Ji is not her biological son - and then makes Gayatri swear to keep it a secret - especially from Rana ji; even getting down on her hands and knees and pleading before her. Gayatri is understandably put in fix: either betray her mother-in-law's trust or lie to her husband.
Given that Rageshwari was claiming Sartaj had raped her - Rana Ji is justifiably appalled (always having the utmost respect for women and women's rights) and sentences Sartaj to death. Gayatri now knowing Sartaj's true identity - panics, seeing Sartaj's execution by his son's hand as a sin - Gayatri sneaks into the dungeon before his execution and sets Sartaj free.
Rana Ji is angered by Gayatri's act. He sets off to hunt down Sartaj and kill him. However, when he eventually returns to the Raj Mahal - it is Avdesh's corpse that is brought back rather than Sartaj's.
The reason for this is again because of Badi Rani Maa. While everyone else was preoccupied, she was carefully plotting her next move. Having scared Sartaj into confessing his identity - Badi Rani Maa had killed Avdesh, and then instructed Sartaj on how to strategically lure Rana Ji into the jungles as he was being chased by him. Rana Ji having shot at Sartaj puzzlingly stumbles across Avdesh's dead body instead. With Sartaj nowhere in sight - Rana Ji mistakenly assumes that he had killed Avdesh.
Rageshwari threatens vengeance and demands retribution. Rana Ji is racked with guilt believing himself to have been the culprit.
After much emotional blackmailing - Rageshwari (along with Badi Rani Maa's coaching) convinces Rana Ji to marry her, demanding in the process that she be given all the rights and perks of a First Wife while Gayatri be forced to act as her servant. Despite, Gayatri and Rajmata's attempts to stop the wedding - Rana Ji and Rageshwari marry.
Rageshwari throws her weight around and tries to demean Gayatri which ultimately leads Gayatri to make three vows - challenging Rageshwari. Gayatri gets three diyas and promises to light each one as each vow has been fulfilled: the first being to win back her status, the second - his love and trust, and the third: for her child to be the heir to Amerkot.
Slowly but surely Gayatri accomplishes the first two vows.
Once again, losing the upper hand Badi Rani Maa (with Rageshwari as her sidekick) turns to black magic and performs a blood spell on Rana Ji - inso that the third vow cannot be realized, as Gayatri and Rana Ji were about to finally consummate their love.
The power of the spell causes Rana Ji to call Rageshwari's name out in bed. As a result - a confused, horrified, and humiliated Gayatri runs out of the room while the power of the spell makes Rana Ji lose consciousness.
The next day, Rana Ji fails to understand why Gayatri is so upset with him - given that he can't recall the events of the previous night. Badi Rani Maa continues to work her strange magic and Rana Ji ends up completely under her thrall - lost to mind control, they bound him to Rageshwari.
Rana Ji ends up breaking the power of the spell on his own during a moment of frustration. He trashes his room and punches things - a result of him clearly realizing that something isn't quite right with him. As this happens, Gayatri's dupatta from a mosque that was once placed on her for protection when she was battling death falls off an armoire and drapes over Rana Ji. The power of the scarf heals him and Rana Ji furiously realizes that he's been used as a pawn.
Rana Ji and Gayatri reconcile and he fills her in on his suspicions. Together they plan to scare Rageshwari into confessing by concocting a dangerous plan.
Gayatri is hesitant to go through with it, because it goes against everything she believes in and she can't bear to carry it out fearing that Rana Ji may get hurt.
Rana Ji assures her that he'll be perfectly fine.
Their plan: make it seem like Gayatri shot Rana Ji in a fit of rage, and then turn the gun on Rageshwari.
The gun will be filled with fake bullets.
Gayatri and Rana Ji plan to execute their plan on a cliff rumoured to be something of lore. If you shout your beloved's name and it echoes back at you 7 times, then you will be with them forever (7 lifetimes).
Unbeknownst to all - Badi Rani Maa learns of Rana Ji and Gayatri's plan and swaps the fake bullets with real ones.
As the plan is put into motion and Gayatri shoots - she is horrified when she realizes that she has shot her husband in the head! She barely has time to fully process anything for Badi Rani Maa comes up from behind her and knocks her unconscious.
Quickly taking advantage of Gayatri's state, Badi Rani Maa drags Gayatri and flings her off the cliff. However, before she can finish Rana Ji off Rajmata and the Royal Guards arrive. Badi Rani Maa flees as Rageshwari fakes injury.
Removing the bullet from Rana Ji's head proves dangerous and the doctor's are forced to leave the bullet inside his head.
At the same time, Rageshwari is spinning a tale to all that will listen about Gayatri having tried to kill her and Rana Ji in a coldblooded jealous rage.
Meanwhile, Badi Rani Maa sneaks into Rana Ji's room who is now recovering from surgery in order to try and kill him again. Surprisingly however, Rana Ji awakens and interrupts her plan. In a shocking twist it is revealed that Rana Ji now has memory loss!
Rana Ji wakes up and emerges as a different person; easily losing his temper and is quite rude and violent. He ends up suffering from terrible headaches - an effect of the bullet moving in his skull. The only person who seems able to stop his headaches is Badi Rani Maa and her gentle touch. In actuality, the ring she wears cures his ailment due to its magnetic countering of the moving bullet.
The show then jumps forward a few months and everyone assumes Gayatri to be dead.
As fate would have it, she did not die. What luckily happened was that Laakhan (Lovey's father) had miraculously found her and nursed her back to health. He returns to the Palace in the guise of changing his mind and agreeing to Chandravadan and Kokila's plan of impregnating Swarnalekha, but instead uses the opportunity to scope out the Palace and relay information back to Gayatri.
The two of them agree that it isn't safe for her to make her return to the Palace just yet. They still don't know who Rageshwari's accomplice is yet and to make matters worse Rana Ji has developed a scary kind of hatred for Gayatri since the accident (again the result of Badi Rani Maa and Rageshwari's shenanigans). His hate for Gayatri is so strong that he even sentences Rajmata to the dungeons for constantly speaking in Gayatri's favour.
Instead, Gayatri dons a disguise and enters the Palace as Savitri (pretending to be Laakhan's cousin) and takes a job at the Palace as a servant in order to set things right.
Unfortunately for Gayatri and Laakhan - Lakshyaraj discovers their plan. Shockingly he doesn't expose them to his family (the result of being insulted daily as being a good-for-nothing), but instead tries to blackmail Gayatri into keeping Laakhan and Swarna away from each other.
Despite conventional norms Swarna and Laakhan are unable to stay away from each other and on Holi they give into temptation and consummate their love. Lakshyaraj however, ends up walking in on them. The two don't notice him and instead of confronting them he angrily walks off in hot pursuit of his father - ready to out Savitri's true identity to his father.
Before Lakshyaraj can do this he is speared by a trishula belonging to an actor in a dance troupe dressed as Lord Shiva for the Holi festivities at the Palace. Everyone is shocked, and as Chandravadan, Kokila and Badi Rani Maa run to his side - Lakshyaraj manages to whisper to Badi Rani Maa that Gayatri is still alive.
Badi Rani Maa is on high alert while it seems like Chandravadan and Kokila have momentary lost their thirst for the Throne. Swarna grieves her husband despite the many atrocities that she suffered at his hands. Kokila can no longer stand the sight of Swarna and wants her dead - even blaming her for Lakshyaraj's fate. Swarna seems to take Kokila's plight to heart and seems willing to die to absolve Kokila's grief. However, Swarna soon learns that she is pregnant (with Bindu - aka Lovey) and defiantly states that she will live for her child.
Badi Rani Maa tries to use the opportunity to try to pass Swarna's child off as Lakshyaraj's to further her family line.
Gayatri soon realizes that Badi Rani Maa was responsible for what happened on the cliff and tries to expose her in front of Rana Ji. However, Badi Rani Maa who now realizes that Savitri and Gayatri are one and the same - plots to expose her in front of Rana Ji.
Rana Ji sentences Gayatri to the dungeons - but then meets her secretly to give her a chance to prove herself - for while Rana Ji may hate Gayatri, the feelings he had developed for Savitri urge him to hear her out.
The two of them re-create the scene at the cliff but in reverse - with Rana Ji holding the gun this time. Rana Ji shoots Gayatri and ends up getting his memory back. He drops the gun as his memories overwhelm him.
Earlier, Rana Ji had informed Badi Rani Maa of his plan and she (along with Rageshwari) had accompanied him - but not without first switching the fake bullets in the gun again with real ones.
With the gun now lying on the floor Badi Rani Maa picks the gun up and aims at Rana Ji - playing right into the plan set to trap her. Gayatri gets up, perfectly fine much to Badi Rani Maa and Rageshwari's surprise - and RaGa reunite as Rageshwari and Badi Rani Maa get dragged off to the dungeons.
Everyone is finally happen for once. Rana Ji learns of all the injustice that Swarnalekha had suffered and is appalled. Having always seen her as his little sister, he and Gayatri arrange Laakhan and Swarna's wedding much to Chandravadan and Kokila's chagrin.
As preparations undergo, many bad omens keep happening. It is also revealed that Gayatri is pregnant (with Rani aka Rani-Gayatri aka Topper) and Rana Ji is overjoyed.
Chandravadan goes to meet his mother in the dungeons and berates her for having failed. Badi Rani Maa shuts him down and informs him that she's saved her biggest trump card yet and that Kunwar Ji needs to head into the jungle and bring Kaal to her at once. She hands him a ring - informing him that Kaal will know who had sent him once he sees it.
Kunwar Ji obliges and heads into the jungles as instructed. There, he sees a crowd gathered around a beast of man who is brandishing two kusarigama's (it's a weapon: a long heavy chain with spears at the end) at a little 3 year old boy (his son - Raja aka Rajveer aka Sir) (sidenote: little Raja is the most adorable toddler everrr! Such a cutiepie.). Chandravadan cannot believe what he is seeing and as the little boy cries and pees in fear - a disgusted Kaal picks him up and proceeds to hurl him into oblivion. Chandravadan saves Raja's life by crying out.
Kaal is perturbed, demanding to know who had the audacity to interrupt him. Chandravadan shows him the ring. Kaal clearly recognizes it.
We quickly learn that many years ago Badi Rani Maa had come across Kaal as a young boy (no older than 10 years old) living in the jungle. He had killed a lion with his bare hands and as result self-proclaimed himself the King of the Jungle. Kaal is essentially Tarzan but if Tarzan were a serial killer and had been raised by Sabor rather than Kala.
Realizing that the boy could be of great use to her one day Badi Rani Maa accepted him as her own.
Kaal follows Chandravadan back to the Palace and breaks Badi Rani Maa out of her prison and the two of them go on a killing spree in what must be equated as ETRETR's version of The Red Wedding. They kill most of the guards and guests. Keep in mind this all is happening on Swarna and Laakhan's wedding day.
Swarnalekha ends up taking a knife meant for Gayatri and everyone thinks Swarna to be dead because she fell to the floor as if she was.
Rana Ji bravely tried to defend everyone and died in the process - being killed by Kaal. Gayatri is shattered and refuses to leave his side.
Laakhan, Rajmata and Gayatri (whom they practically have to drag away from Rana Ji's dead body) flees the chaos, escaping with their lives.
It is then that we see Swarna struggle to get up. Thinking she was dead the above 3 had fled. Swarna is thrown in the dungeons and Kaal takes control of the Throne. Badi Rani Maa is helpless to stop him not quite knowing how to go against Kaal and begins to plot, while Chandravadan feels betrayed and robbed that his mother let Kaal take the Throne when he feels that it should have been given to him.
Two eunuchs are dismayed at what has happened and curse all the villains and claim that their deaths will come at the hands of Rana Ji and Gayatri's daughter = Rani. Kaal quickly orders the Royal Guards to hunt down and kill every pregnant woman in the kingdom.
The story slowly jumps forward and Gayatri, Swarna and Rageshwari have each given birth to a girl, girl, and boy respectively (Rani, Bindu and Jeevan).
During her pregnancy Gayatri along with a small army of pregnant ladies that had fled Amerkot and sought sanctuary in her refuge - train hard alongside her to go up against Kaal.
Gayatri vows that her daughter will grow up to serve her native land and do right by it - and above all else she will also reclaim her father's Throne.
Gayatri eventually dies shortly after giving birth to Rani - but in battle -- going head to head with Kaal in an act of revenge for him killing her husband. She fights him with her newborn daughter strapped to her back.
Gayatri manages to cut off Badi Rani Ma's left arm, but Kaal ultimately stabs and kills Gayatri.
Rajmata flees once again with her granddaughter this time as Gayatri-Devi lies dying in the Palace.
Gayatri-Devi looks around in shock as the Palace doors open to her for the final time. The Royal Guards stand in salute and line the entrance in greeting and Rana Ji stands happily waiting for her with open arms. As Gayatri joins him elatedly - she hesitates and asks about the fate of their daughter. Rana Ji assures her that Rani will be just fine - as she has their best qualities.
The Palace doors slowly close on RaGa's ever after - the lovers having finally reunited in the afterlife.
Meanwhile, Rajmata has taken to the jungle and is still trying to flee. She is however, caught by Chandravadan. Coupled with his mother betrayal and having just lost his son - Kunwarji uncharacteristically takes pity on Rajmata and let's her go - making her vow never to return to the Palace. Rajmata flees, regrouping with Laakhan and the two depart eventually seeking shelter in one of the many neighbouring farming villages.
When Kunwarji returns to the Raj Mahal he tells his mother that he had caught Rajmata and Gayatri's daughter but then lies and says that he killed them - chopping them into pieces and then let the jungle animals have them. Badi Rani Maa believes him - relishing in her victory.
The story jumps forward again.
It's now 7 years later.
Gayatri and Rana Ji's daughter is now being raised by Rajmata and Laakhan. Rajmata and Laakhan both name her after her mother, but where Rajmata names her Gayatri, Laakhan names her Rani. As a result her full name is Rani-Gayatri. The two agree that simply calling her Rani is best as it is less conspicuous and safer.
At the palace Kaal has taken control of the throne. He has 2 sons: Raja (the son he shares with his wife Queen Ambika) and Jeevan (the son he shares with his mistress Rageshwari). He seems to favour Jeevan more than he does Raja, which understandably irks Raja. Raja also serves as Kaal's punching bag - being beaten and treated horribly - and has suffered being yanked around, whipped until he can barely move, mocked for his gentle nature (he refuses to hurt people) -- among many other things.
Swarnalekha has never left the palace vowing to have stayed only to see the villains' downfall. Her daughter, whom she has named Bindu has grown up in the Raj Mahal. Bindu advocates on Raja's behalf and tries to turn the tables on Jeevan whenever Jeevan tries to mess with Raja.
On the other hand, Rajmata, Laakhan, and Rani are all now very happy living a peaceful and modest existence. Rajmata who was previously all about living a wealthy, rich, glitz and glam lifestyle is now content living the simple life of a villager. Having mellowed out throughout the years - due to her daughter-in-law's Gayatri's humble nature and influence and coupled with having lost her entire family - Rajmata has lost her taste for the Royal life. With time she has realized where true happiness lies - and that realization is what eventually repairs the broken relationship that she had had with her son.
As a result, Rajmata raises Rani to live by that ethic: that having a true, pure heart is all that matters.
Rajmata also now considers Laakhan her son.
Laakhan and Rajmata caution Rani away from the Palace - telling her tales about a Demon and Witch that live there. Rani cutely responds to this tale by informing her Daadu that when she grows up she will see to it that she gets rid of all the monsters that live in the Raj Mahal.
Rani has grown to be quite a chatterbox and always speaks her mind - blurting things out, confessing to things and speaking without a filter at times - especially when she's caught in a lie. She also tells unbelievably hilarious tales to cover up a lie or to hide her mischief. She hates being locked in closed-off-tight-spaces and also has a fear of heights. Her most prized possession is a stray puppy she has taken in and named Kaali Prasad. Rani also never shies away from helping those in need and goes above and beyond to help them.
At her school, Rani seems to be the most popular and the kids all flock around her.
Kaal ends up receiving an invitation from the farmers of Rani's village and along with Badi Rani Maa and Raja - they head to Rani's village for a function to garner morale.
Raja leaves during Kaal's speech to use the bathroom. The public washrooms at the school horrify him and he refuses to even step foot in the latrine. His accompanying Guard suggests that he just pee wherever he wants given that the Kingdom belongs to him anyway. Raja happily obliges and his caretaker wanders off to stand lookout.
As fate would have it, Rani stumbles upon the sighting and is appalled at Raja's crude behaviour. She throws a rock at him and yells at him for peeing in her classroom. Raja could care less and mistakes her for a feeble village kid. To his surprise, Rani gathers her gang and the group mock him and blow firecrackers at him. Raja escapes their torture and heads back to find Badi Rani Maa and Kaal.
Rajmata, Laakhan, and Rani's happiness however is soon shattered when Rajmata gets sick. She is diagnosed as suffering from tuberculosis.
Treatment was very expensive and Laakhan was struggling to gather the money. He was close to reaching the amount due but ended up injuring his hand. Laakhan secretly sells his blood for money - an act that can prove fatal to him. Rajmata is horrified when she learns this.
With Laakhan now unable to work - a little 6 year old Rani takes it upon herself to secretly secure the money. She defies her Daadu and Laakhan and takes a job at the palace as a servant in order to acquire money for her Daadu's treatment.
After bringing food to Raja, Jeevan and Bindu during a tutoring session - Kaal overhears Rani refer to herself as Rani Gayatri when Raja, Jeevan Bindu insist that she is their slave since they are Royalty. Kaal interrupts their little argument and asks Rani if she knows the tale of Queen Gayatri. Rani tells him she does not and Kaal orders her to follow him.
Rani hesitantly follows.
As they walk Rani refers to Kaal as a monster and wants to know if he truly is a Demon. Kaal proudly boasts about his previous animalistic behaviour, which makes Rani nervous and the poor girl wonders if Kaal is leading her to place where he will eat her. Kaal takes Rani to an old storeroom and lights a candle to lead the way in. Once inside, he shows her a bloodstained picture of Rana Ji and Gayatri-Devi. He dictates the gory details of the day he had killed them and proudly confesses that he is the monster of their story. Rani cries listening to this. Kaal blows out the candle he was holding and then locks the terrified little girl inside the dark room alone with the bloody picture of her smiling parents. She holds onto her mother's locket and prays for a savoir.
Raja suddenly opens the door and lets her out. He gives her water and helps her catch her bearings. Rani calls Kaal a Demon and Raja agrees.
Raja and Rani quickly become the best of friends - with him nicknaming her Chipkali after her refusal to stop calling him Raja Baja.
Rani sneaks him away from the Palace every now and then - and brings him to her home - where he finds the warmth of a family that he had been denied of his whole life.
Raja who was saving up for a new watch gave Rani all the money he had saved up in order to help her with her Daadu's treatment as she was his best friend. In return, Rani gives Raja her puppy Kaali Prasad after Laakhan teaches her to never take something if she has nothing to give in return.
Badi Rani Maa was quickly realizing that she was losing her control and influence over Raja, because his friendship with Rani had Raja questioning things around him; he was also slowly starting to see Badi Rani Maa as the evil force that she was. Also, due to Raja's friendship with Rani -- Raja and his father's relationship had been slowly but surely repairing itself.
Rani was a good influence on Raja and also advocated for the rights of the servants of the Palace (the way her mother would). Seeing Rani as a thorn in her side, Badi Rani Maa orchestrated a plan to be rid of her. She recruited Jeevan to help her by bribing him with samosa's and laddoo's (they didn't nickname him buk-kar for nothing).
Badi Rani Maa then approached Rani with a sob story about how helping Jeevan become a better person would benefit Raja as it would bridge the gap between the two bickering brothers. For Raja's sake Rani agreed. Badi Rani Maa asked her to keep their Jeevan-makeover' a secret.
At the same time, Laakhan had just found out about Rani working at the Palace. He realized he couldn't just tell her to never return to the Palace as it would arise suspicion and if the Royal Guards came looking for her they might figure out whom she really is and that she is RaGa's daughter.
After reuniting with Swarnalekha - Laakhan was in the process of making an escape plan but he still needed more time to get things in place. In the meantime, he made Rani vow that when she went to work at the Palace - that she shouldn't speak to anyone. He made her swear on his life to stress the seriousness of it all. Rani vowed her silence and then took the vow literally.
Raja was confused by her silence -- and then coupled with all the sightings of her and Jeevan together, he began to panic thinking that he had been replaced as her best friend. Badi Rani Maa of course took advantage of his anxiety and began to manipulate situations around him that weren't at all what they seemed or looked to be.
By the end of it all Badi Rani Maa had succeeded in making him think that Rani was an opportunist and a gold digger -- someone who only cared about what a person could do or give to her.
Every time Raja turned around Rani was either holding money or wearing a new dress which Badi Rani Maa made seem was gifted to her by Jeevan.
RajNi began to drift. Yet despite all of that Badi Rani Maa still wasn't done. She hired some goons to capture a blindfolded Jeevan and then had them beat him senseless. (Keep in mind - Jeevan was no older than 7 years old at the time. It was very disturbing to watch...Even though the gist of it was implied). Badi Rani Maa then planted Raja's necklace at the scene next to a wounded Jeevan.
Upon discovering the necklace Kaal assumed that Raja had been the culprit.
However, Badi Rani Maa wanted Kaal and Raja at loggerheads. Her goal: make Raja hate his father to the core. Her plan is to instigate Raja into one day killing Kaal - so that she can attain the Throne.
Kaal now refusing to believe in Raja's innocence only added to the already long list of grievances Raja had against his father.
Since Raja refused to admit to hurting Jeevan, Kaal then banished Raja and had him exiled to a hostel.
Badi Rani Maa once again worked the situation and made Raja think that it was Rani who had beaten up Jeevan and had framed him in the process in an act of revenge for having humiliated her at Bindu's birthday party.
As Raja was being sent away Rani tried her best to try to clear his misunderstanding but her vow to Laakhan held her back. Unable to see what was happening to Raja she broke her vow of silence and tried to explain, but by this time Raja had hit his limit and would not listen to reason.
Raja was then sent away to a hostel where the kids (specifically two - which could possibly be the 2 boys always seen following Rajveer after the leap) there bullied him. In order to survive in the hostel Raja embraced the worst parts of himself and became a bully too.
Rani on the other hand was heartbroken that Raja hadn't listened to her. She sadly made her way home only to find Laakhan dead - having been killed by Badi Rani Maa who had finally found him. (Swarnalekha and Laakhan were both killed by Badi Rani Maa on their wedding day (second attempt to get married too). It's such a tragedy because Bindu (aka Lovey) never got to learn that he was her father. Badi Rani Maa instead has apparently groomed Bindu (Lovey) in her image and fed her a sob story about how Swarna ran off with another man and left her behind because she never loved her.).
Rajmata again flees with Rani when she discovers Laakhan dead. With nowhere to go the two of them find shelter in a community hospital where the Doctor allows them to work as cleaners in exchange for a place to stay and to pay for Rajmata's treatment. They are eventually taken in by a nurse who works there.
Thinking that because she broke her vow -- Rani blamed herself for Laakhan's death. It was implied that she may somewhat hold Raja responsible also - given that trying to save him is what forced her to speak and break her vow. Those ill feelings however seem overpowered by her need to find Raja instead.
Looking up at the sky, Rani resolves to find him one day - hoping to clear his misunderstanding, at the same time Raja is shown begging fate (while also looking up at the sky) to never show him Rani's face ever again as he hates her.
The story jumps forward again - this time 12 years with the story now set in the 1960s.
The children have all grown up and are now attending Amerkot University.
Rani is now openly going by the new name of Gayatri (Topper), Raja is now Rajveer (Raj,Sir), Bindu is now Lovey, and Jeevan has simplified his name to Jeeves.
