Wonderful thoughts Gan.
I am not sure if my perspective of Raman's love would make sense to you all.
As for me, I am pretty confident that Raman never loved Shagun with all his heart in the first place. Their marriage was arranged by their parents, where Raman developed an instant liking for Shagun. He was attracted towards her external beauty and infact bowled over by her external beauty. Post marriage, when shagun started throwing her tantrums around, he had to put up with the demands of shagun, not out of immense love, but because she was his wife and the mother of his kids. He wanted to keep her happy as any good husband would want to. Even after she left him for Ashok, Raman pleaded her to come back with him not because of his love, but for his kids and the family. He even avoided talking to Ruhi because of the mole which reminds him of how foolish and disgusting he has been in judging the goodness of a woman with her external beauty.
That is not the case with Ishita. Despite the fact that his relationship with Ishita started as "sirf ruhi ke liye" note and with bitterness, he gradually began to understand and admire the beauty of Ishita's soul. He actually started understanding the meaning of love after Ishita came in his life, he understood that love is not materialistic, he understood that love is not one-sided with one person taking benefit of the other always. He understood that love is about give and take and that gives immense happiness mutually. So his love for Ishita gradually developed and became deep-rooted with in Raman. He loves her with his heart and soul. Ishita is Raman's lifeline and reason of existence in the world, not even his parents and his kids. This truth reflects even today in every action of Raman. Yes, he is impulsive and blunt many a times, but that is what RKB is all about and infact Ishita is in love with that RKB only.
Raman is nothing without Ishita and he needs Ishita with him to actually live. Shagun is literally non-existent for Raman. Then comes the question of Ishita taking shagun's place in Raman's heart.
I may be wrong, just my POV.
Cheers
