"I have a Father's Day every day" -Dennis Banks
Father's Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrates the contribution fathers and father-figures make for their children's lives. Popularly, its celebrated on the third Sunday of June but a few countries have varying dates!
Father's Day celebration was inspired by the Mother's Day tradition in early 20th century. It is believed that Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd proposed that a day celebrating Fathers was obligatory. The first celebration was held at the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) in 1910, thanks to the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd who wanted to honor her father. Her father William Jackson Smart raised six children all by himself after their mother passed away.
In 1913, a bill was introduced in congress to accord national recognition of the holiday but it was denied. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, dedicating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day on the third Sunday of June each year. Sonora Smart Dodd was honored for her contribution at the World's Fair in Spokane in 1974. Mrs. Dodd died in 1978 at age 96.
