Chapter 40
Khushi, with her satchel, came out of the main gate. She had to first go to the place she had left her bike the day before. She had thought she would go with Arnav. But Arnav didn't bother to ask her.
"Why didn't he ask me if I needed any help? Is he upset with me? But why would he be?" wondered Khushi. But then she brushed away her thoughts thinking, "May be that's how he is... May be I am expecting too much from him...!"
Khushi went ahead to hire an auto-rikshaw. But she couldn't find one. She waited for about twenty minutes. It was dark with clouds covering the sky. And sudden showers began to pour down. Khushi quickly ran and took shelter under the watchman's cabin. Her legs were paining. She was limping slightly. She was not aware of the pair of eyes that were set on her.
Arnav was observing her from a distance. Somewhere inside him he felt that he should have taken her to the place where she had left her bike. Just then he saw Khushi calling out for an auto. The auto stopped in front of the gate. It was raining heavily, with lightening and thunder. Khushi was completely wet by the time she reached the auto and began telling the auto driver where she wanted to go. Arnav couldn't hear anything but he could see. And though Khushi didn't notice it, Arnav didn't miss to notice the wicked smile of the auto driver as Khushi got into the auto. Arnav immediately understood that the character of the auto driver wasn't good and Khushi was not at all safe. Without bothering the rain, Arnav ran to the auto and stood in front of it. It took only a few seconds for Arnav to get drenched in the heavy rain. The driver stopped the auto. Khushi was very surprised on seeing a drenched Arnav. What was he doing and why? Before she could understand anything, Arnav held her by her hand and pulled her out of the auto. Khushi stared at Arnav as he looked at the auto-driver and said, "Bhaiyya, auto nahi chahiye... You can go, madam doesn't need an auto!"
The auto-driver left in disappointment. Arnav was staring at the back of the auto as it was driven away, and Khushi was staring at Arnav in confusion and a hope that he still was the same Arnav, unchanged.
Arnav was still holding Khushi's hand. Before Khushi could say anything, Arnav pulled her towards his car, opened the door of the front seat and forced her in. By his gestures and body language, he seemed angry. But Khushi was unable to understand the reason behind it. Arnav got into the driver's seat, swept away the water on his body with his hands and closed the door with a bang. Khushi was looking at him waiting for him to say something, to tell what was going on! He looked at her.
"Now what are you looking at?!" said Arnav in anger.
Khushi gave him a confused look. Arnav was angrier that Khushi was being so dumb that she did not understand anything even now.
"Don't you understand Khushi?!!" scolded Arnav much to Khushi's surprise. "That man could have done anything to you!! Don't you realise that it is very dangerous?!! Try to recognise people, Khushi...!! What would you have done had I not been there? Haan? You won't be able to even imagine what all could have happened with you!!"
And then Arnav realised that he had spoken too much. He realised that he was more scared for her than she was for herself.
There was silence for a couple of moments. Then Arnav said in a gentle voice, "What if I did not offer to help, you should have asked for it! I wouldn't have denied!!"
And this made Khushi's heart beat louder with joy. Arnav did care for her, yes he did!! She was so happy to see the concern he showed towards her.
Both were silent as Arnav drove. Arnav decided to drop Khushi home directly as it was raining and driving a two-wheeler was not a good idea.
Arnav and Khushi were silent. Arnav didn't look at Khushi even once. Khushi was frequently glancing at Arnav. The heavy rain came down thrashing on the car as if it wood break the glass any moment.
"Stop the car!!" said Khushi suddenly, "Please stop the car, Sir!!"
Arnav immediately pressed the brake and stopped the car instantly. "What happened Khushi?! Are you alright? Any..." he asked worried.
But before he completed, Khushi had opened the door and was out in rain, her hands outstretched. She looked up and closed her eyes enjoying the rain drops falling on her face. Arnav just stared at her, amazed. She was so beautiful, so innocent, so pure... Arnav couldn't take his eyes off her. But he suddenly looked away thinking, "What are you doing Arnav? This is not right!! Control yourself... don't get carried away!!..."
Arnav's thoughts were interrupted by Khushi when she came to his side and knocking on the window glass gestured at him to come out and join her. He refused at once. But Khushi opened the door and pulled him out holding his hand, against his wish. He was very angry.
"Khushi!! Why are you forcing me?" he yelled, "I hate rains!! Do you understand!!!"
Khushi left his hand at once. "Sorry Sir..." said Khushi scared of his anger.
Arnav turned his back towards Khushi. Resting his hands on the roof of the car, he said, "I just hate rains because they remind me of my Maa"
His voice was wet and so were his eyes. He remembered all those moments he had spent with his mother, Veena, during the rains twenty years ago. Jumping in the puddles, splashing water on each other, the paper-boats, the hot onion pakodas his Maa used to make, his Maa's scoldings for not wearing raincoat on purpose... all those memories flushed into his mind again after years. The memories he did not want to recall because they made him weak, they made him feel lonely.
"Remembering your Maa is no wrong, Sir!" said Khushi softly, "I am sure, wherever she is, she must be feeling happy that you still remember her, that you still love her! She is not your weakness, Sir, she is your strength!!" Arnav turned to look at Khushi as she spoke, "Spread your hands and free your mind... Close your eyes and feel the rain..."
Arnav blindly followed what she said. He stood there with his hands outstretched and eyes closed... his ears listening to Khushi's words, "See...!! She is smiling at you!! She is with you... right here" said Khushi as she placed her hand on his chest over his heart. "She will be happy only when your heart is happy... only when you are happy... She will be at peace when you are at peace... She lives in you Sir, and will always be with you!"
Khushi's words made Arnav feel better. He was enjoying the rain. He had never thought that the rain which he hated all these years would give him so much pleasure. It was not the rain actually, it was Khushi!! He had never thought anyone would understand him so well.
Khushi took Arnav to a road-side tea stall and insisted him to have tea with her. He was reluctant initially but Khushi did not listen. She made him drink the tea her way - holding the glass with both palms, taking in the aroma and the hot vapours through deep breaths with closed eyes and then taking small sips thoroughly enjoying every bit of it. Arnav had never thought before that drinking tea could be so enjoyable.
Arnav took out a thousand rupee note to pay for two glasses of tea and the vendor stared blankly while Khushi burst out laughing. Finally Khushi paid for the tea. She turned to see Arnav looking at her. Both were lost into each other's eyes. They slowly moved closer without breaking the eye lock. They were only a few inches away from each other. The tea vendor was enjoying the scene, feeling happy for this lovely couple.
Arnav was looking deep into Khushi's eyes. Khushi closed he eyes feeling Arnav so close. Arnav tucked the strands of hair on Khushi's face behing her ears and caressed her cheeks with his fingers. Khushi shivered at his touch. Arnav admired that face of hers... So beautiful, so gentle, so innocent... Those wet hair sticking on her face, those closed eyes, that perfect nose adding to her beauty... And then his gaze shifted to her lips. Ah! He couldn't wait any more to taste those wet rozy lips, so soft... so delicious they seemed. He cupped Khushi's face, her chest heaving. He closed his eyes and tilted his head to reach out for those lips which were parted slightly feeling his warm breath. The loud thunder suddenly made Arnav open his eyes and realise what was happening.
"Wait!! What am I doing?!! What is happening to me?!!" he thought as anger took over his face.
"Just stay away from me!!!" he shouted as he pushed Khushi back forcefully. He threw an angry glance at her and walked away to the car leaving behind a shocked Khushi.
