Chapter 44

The game was on and in a full swing. So far they played 2 rounds and all rounds won by team rahul-maanvi. the reason being the coordination between the two while payal and Nikhil were arguing over their strategy the whole time.

Nikhil~ "Payal di... aap theek se khelo na. Aap ki wajah se hum bhai aur bhabhi se bar-bar har rahe hain."

Payal~ "Meri galti? Aur jo tum mere player ko beech mein attack karne lage the uska kya? Theek se tum nahi khel rahe ho aur mujhe sikha rahe ho..."

Rahul~ "Tum do no please decide karlo ki tum game mein ladna chahte ho ya real mein. Tum do no ko theek se nahi khelna hai to boldo. Mera aur maanvi ka time kyun waste kar rahe ho?"

Nikhil~ "Bhai aap to rehne hi do. Aapko itni achi team player mili hai isliye aap jeet rahe ho, agar mujhe aisi team player mili hoti to main bhi jeet sakta hoon."

Maanvi~ "Uske liye to tumko shadi karni padegi." She teased. "Par kyunki tum abhi shadi ke liye bahaut chote ho to isliye tumhe jo team member mila hai uske saath hi kaam chalana padega."

Payal~ "Par main to itni choti nahi hoon phir main kyun phas gayi...?"

Rahul and maanvi looks at payal with surprise at what she just said. Certainly she didn't mean it but she did felt that vikas might be her mister right, and in the flow of conversation she accidentaly let her heart's innermost feelings slip out.

Payal trying to control the situation "Mera matlab wo nahi tha..."

Maanvi "To kya matlab tha?"

Payal~ "Bas yahi matlab tha ki main itni choti nahi hoon. Par phir bhi mujhe mera teammate choose karne ko nahi mila."

Rahul~ "Kyunki tum itni badi bhi nahi ho ki apna teammate tum khud choose kar sako."

Payal~ "This is not fair!"

Rahul~ "Fair ki bachi... chup-chap ek game to tum khel nahi sakti aur baatein itni badi badi karne ki koshish karti ho. Nikhil se badi ho par uss-se bhi jyada immature ho tum. Isliye jyada argue karne ki zaroorat nahi hai. Seedhe seedhe game khelo aur jyada smart banane ki koshish mat karo."

Payal looked at rahul with a disappointed scowl. She also looked at maanvi to atleast show some support but maanvi didn't take any sides either. So the game continued between the four with less fighting between Nikhil and payal until chotu came to announce dinner. Rahul may have quitened them but there seemed to be a cold war going between Nikhil and payal still.

When the four of them reached at the dinning table, dadi was first to take notice of the fluffy looks payal and Nikhil had.

Dadi ji~ "Yeah kya haal bana rakha hai inn dono ne. Ki rolla paya hai?"

Rahul~ "Kuch nahi dadi, game khel rahe the aur chote bacho se bhi chote hain yeh dono. Bas lad liye ki game mein cheating ki ya phir game theek se nahi khelna aata."

Dadi ji~ "Oh o, yeh bhi koi ladne nu gal hai? Ek game ke liye itna muh koi fulla kar baithta hai kya?"

Sonali~ "Rehne dijiye mommy ji. Abhi muh fulla kar baithe hai kal phir ek saath honge."

Everyone laughed at this and moved on. Raj Shaleen and Nisha were also at the table. Raj called to Sonali;

Raj~ "Sonali, aaj Shaleen aur main ne kuch plans decide kiye hai Shaleen ke album ke liye. Uske liye mujhe aur Shaleen ko apni team ke saath kuch din ke liye Mumbai jaana padega."

Sonali~ "Mumbai?... Achanak?..."

Raj~ "Shaleen ki album ko market mein properly launch karna zaroori hai. Aur Mumbai mein next week kuch naye singers ek common platform par live perform karne wale hain to zyada badi audience bhi hogi. Main kuch logo ko jaanta hoon to Shaleen ko acha chance mil jayega jyada bade stage par perform karne ka. Isliye achanak hi plan ban gaya hai."

Dadi ji~ "Par puttar, 4 din baad hum maanvi ki godh-bharayi kar rahe hain. Agar tu Mumbai chala jayega to...?" she didn't get to finish her sentence.

Raj~ "Ma, Shaleen apne career ki shuruat kar raha hai. Meri zimmedari hai ki main Shaleen ke career ko bhi rahul ki tarah badne mein madat karoon. Ab iss se acha mauka phir nahi milega."

Dadi ji~ "Shaleen ke liye apni zimmedari pata hai, aur maanvi ke liye nahi?"

Raj~ "Aap sab log hain na maanvi ke liye. Waise bhi kaunsa abhi hum koi bada function kar rahe hain. Aapne hi to kaha tha ki sirf ghar ke log hi honge. Jab hum phir se maanvi ki godh bharayi karenge tab main zaroor rahoonga. Par abhi Shaleen ko meri zaroorat hai. Please iske aage abhi mujhe aur koi discussion nahi chahiye."

Dadi ji~ "Par..."

Rahul caught dadi ji's hand to not try to drag this meaning-less conversation any further. What most of them didn't notice was maanvi's little disappointment with this news that raj will not be part of this family get-together. The whole plan was to try bring raj and upamanyu together but since raj will be going out of town, there was no point to even go ahead with this plan.

After the dinner, Sonali, dadi ji, rahul and maanvi headed to rahul-maanvi's room.

There is no need to mention that the main topic of discussion is raj's sudden plan to go out of town for a week and maanvi's godh bharayi.

Maanvi~ "Mommy ji, dadi ji... aap dono pareshan mat ho. Hum yeah family get together phir kabhi plan kar lenge."

Sonali~ "Nahi maanvi. Yeah pehla mauka hai jab tumhari puri family yahan aayegi. Yeah godh bharayi hogi aur raj ke bina hogi."

Dadi ji~ "Sonali bilkul theek keh rahi hai. Raj nahi hai to kya hua, hum sab to hai na. Hum yeh godh bharayi zaroor karenge."

Sonali~ "Aur rahi baat family get-together ki, wo to phir plan ho jayegi. Tum tension mat lo maanvi. Sab theek ho jayega."

Maanvi noded but in her heart she was still disappointed that raj will not be the part of this small family function. Rahul saw this in maanvi's eyes and he waited to talk to her about this once these two are alone in the room.

Dadi ji~ "Aur main to kahoongi ki acha hi hai. Wo chudail bhi ghar par drama create karne ke liye nahi hogi to hum sab ache se sari celebration kar sakte hain."

Maanvi~ "Chudail?" she gets little confused to who is dadi ji referring to.

Dadi ji~ "Arre iss ghar mein ek hi to chudail hai... Nisha!"

Dadi ji's little humor talks are always the most timed, light hearted comments that lightens the spirits and mood in such heavy and serious discussions. Sonali, rahul and maanvi enjoyed this light conversation over how Nisha is always the menance that is someway around to create trouble for everyone.

Sonali~ "Yeh to aapne bilkul sahi kaha mommy ji. Acha hai, raj aur Shaleen ke saath Nisha bhi Mumbai jayegi to ghar mein kam-se-kam ek hafta to shanti rahegi."

Dadi ji~ "Aur iss beech rahul maanvi ko bhi time mil jayega apne album ke wo... kya kehte hain?"

Rahul~ "Video, dadi... music video."

Dadi ji~ "Haan wahi, wahi. Wo bhi tum dono aaram se kar loge."

The discussion ended with the decision to let the plans for godh bharayi stay as planned even with the absence of raj from it. Dadi ji and Sonali left rahul and maanvi and went back to their rooms. Sonali had to look after the packing for raj for his trip to Mumbai for Shaleen's album promotion while dadi ji had to go get dada ji up to speed with this recent discussion.

Upamanyu and shilpa were talking about the godh bharayi function. A minute later, harsh gets back home from his work. He finds upu and shilpa in good spirits so he inquires.

Harsh~ "Maa, baba... kya baat hai aaj aap dono itni khush hain. Lagta hai aaj koi aaya tha."

Upu~ "Tum ekdum sahi guess kiya. Aaj rahul ka dadi ji aur maa yahan aaye the, maanvi ki godh bharayi ke liye hum sabko bulane ke liye."

Harsh~ "Par baba, yeh rasam to kuch mahine baad hoti hai na?"

Shilpa~ "Maine bhi yahi kaha tha par samdhan ji ne kaha ki yeh rasam abhi to sirf ek bahana hai. Wahan abhi sirf humare dono parivar ke hi log honge."

Harsh~ "Sirf ghar ke log? Jaise ki family get-together?" he was little unsure he understood the situation completely.

Shilpa~ "Haan harsh."

Harsh~ "Aap jaante hain na ki baba aur raj uncle mein bilkul nahi banti, aap phir iss sabke liye taiyar kaise ho gaye? Aur yaad hain na jab pehli bar maa aur main wahan..."

Shilpa cuts harsh's sentence as she had never mentioned this to upamanyu how she and harsh were insulted in sabarwal mansion when they went to see maanvi after her marriage with rahul. "Harsh... hum jaante hain ki tere baba aur raj mein bilkul nahi banti. Par ab wo log maanvi ke kuch lagte hain. Sirf ek insaan ki wajah se hum dusare logo ko to uss nazar se nahi dekh sakte na? Uss ghar mein aur bhi log hain wo maanvi ko apna maante hain, humko apna maante hain. Maanvi aur rahul ke liye... aur uss ghar ke baki sadasyoon ke liye... hume purani batoon se aage badna hoga. Thodi pehel unhone ki, ab humara farz hai ki thodi pehel hum bhi karein."

Harsh thought on what shilpa said and replied "Aap theek keh rahi hain maa. Hum kisi aur ki galti ki wajah se dusare logo se galat vyawahar nahi kar sakte. Rahul ko samajhne mein maine bhi galti ki thi par wo apne papa jaisa bilkul bhi nahi hai. Uss ghar mein aur bhi log hain jo sahi hain, ache hain. Unke liye hum purani batoon ko peeche chod, aage badenge. Agar unhone bulaya hai, to hum iss godh bharayi mein zaroor jayenge... maanvi-rahul, aur unki family ke liye."

Upamanyu may not have shown but he till had concerns about going in front of raj on the day of godh bharayi, unaware of the fact that raj will not be in town for next week.

Rahul maanvi were finally alone in their room. Rahul closed the door after Sonali and dadi ji left. He came to sit next to maanvi and took her hand in his hands. Maanvi looked up in his eyes and tried to hide her thoughts but then decided not to. Rahul understood it well.

Rahul~ "Maanvi... I know ki tum kisi baat ko lekar pareshan ho. Kya baat hai? Kahin tum dad ko lekar to tum stress nahi le rahi?"

Maanvi~ "Rahul... Kya papa ne yeh trip godh bharayi mein nahi aane ke liye plan ki hai?"

Rahul~ "Maanvi, agar tumko abhi bhi yeh lagta hai ki dad tumhe iss ghar ki bahu ki tarah accept nahi karenge to tum galat soch rahi ho. Mere dad slow hain par wo tumhe dheere dheere accept karne lage hain."

Maanvi~ "Tumhe sach mein lagta hain ki wo mujhe accept karne lage hain?"

Rahul~ "Wo tumse theek se baat karte hain, pehle ki tarah avoid ya ignore nahi karte. Tum jaanti ho ki tumhare baba aur mere dad ke beech mein jo differences hain unse aage badne mein dono ko thoda time lagega. Par ab jab mom aur dadi bhi humari help kar rahi hain to I m sure... yeh differences bhi mit jayenge. Aur maanvi ji, jaisa ki doctor ne aapko kaha hai... tum bilkul bhi stress mat lo. Ok?"

Maanvi noded with a faint smile. Rahul always knows what to say to make her feel better and it works well. The bond and relation with this kind of love and understanding would be powerful enough to bring even the most fearsome enemies down on the plain and enter into a truce, then what chance did raj and upamanyu had when these two put in efforts to remove the thorns from the past. And rahul-maanvi also has support from Sonali, dadi ji and dada ji in their efforts, which is enough to ensure that their combined efforts will bear fruits in time and soon.

Chapter 45

Mr. khurana was in his room again. His first strike did shake raj well. The photos and the records were something that would have hinted raj that someone knows the dirty secret that had been kept hidden from the whole world all this time.

Mr. K~ "I thought that you would try to find the person who knows your dirty little secret but you seem very quiet than I had hoped. What would be your next move raj? Would you even lose sleep over it or make a slip-up, stressing over the identity of this person who sent you these proofs?"

The thought was keeping sleep away from Mr. khurana. A moment later, his phone buzzed and there was someone on the other side of the phone who informed Mr. khurana about raj's sudden trip to Mumbai.

Mr. K~ "Raj... Mumbai?"

"Yes sir, the news is confirmed. Raj sir is planning to go to Mumbai with his other son Shaleen for promotion of his new album. There is some event for new singers and it is a big platform that can be used to help Shaleen sir reach out to a massive audience."

Mr. K~ "And raj will be heading there himself? Anyways thanks for this info. If there is any new developments, do keep me posted."

The call is disconnected and Mr. Khurana is back to his wondering. "Raj has finally taken interest in helping his other son Shaleen... Is it because he feels unsecure that if rahul found out about how his mother died he would break all ties with him? Or is it simply because he doesn't even care if anyone found out his secret and thinks he is untouchable and can just waltz around like he is the king of the world?"

Then he remembers the meeting about rahul's current and new album and how raj and rahul were behaving towards each other during that meeting.

Mr. khurana's thoughts progressed further "Is it that these two had been moving apart already? There was some tension between raj and rahul during that meeting. And after that raj has not participated in any decisions regarding rahul's albums. So maybe raj is honestly trying to help his other son, shaleen's career and help him settle down in music industry just like rahul. So maybe raj does feel like a vine that is losing its grip on the tree and hence trying to nourish another sapling into a tree so it can move on to it in case of a storm."

Thinking that his expression turns dull as he was counting on hurting raj by targeting someone dear to him but if raj and rahul are parting away then this plan will not work as intended. "A person who can harm his own wife for his gain is incapable of loving anyone. The only thing that he loves is his fame and money." Evil grin spreads across his face as he thinks that the only way to hurt raj is to take away his name and money that he gloats about all the time.

"Beware Raj Sabarwal! I m coming for you!" The room echoes will an evil laugh.

Few days later, on the day of maanvi's godh bharayi... morning at sabarwal mansion was not quiet as usual. Sonali and dadi ji were asking servants to double check the preparations even though the occasion was not a grand one, only the members of the two families.

Sonali~ "Chotu... did you check if Nikhil has woken up or no? And what about payal? Is she awake or sleeping like Nikhil as well?"

Chotu~ "Ma'am, when few minutes ago I went up to check, Nikhil baba asked me to let him stay in bed for couple minutes more. I did knock on payal didi's door but no response. Do you want me to go and wake them up?"

Sonali~ "No, nevermind. I know they wont listen to anyone else. I will go and wake them up myself. You carry on with the preparations." She takes few steps towards the stairs then stops and calls out for driver Prakash. "Prakash!... would you please go and pick up maanvi's family from their residence?"

Prakash~ "Yes ma'am." And he leaves immediately to get shilpa, upu and harsh.

Dadi ji appears from the kitchen as Prakash leaves and cals to Sonali to remind her to send one car to pick up the pandit ji from the temple as well. Dadi ji had talked to a pandit ji for conducting this godh bharayi and pooja. On that day, pandit ji had told them that after the morning prarthana he can come to do the rituals.

On dadi ji's reminding, driver Shankar leaves to pick up the pandit ji from the temple. "It is so much better without the evil Nisha and her schemeing around to mess with things. At the least somedays goes by peacefully." Dadi ji thought to herself.

Sonali makes her way straight to nikhil's room first to wake him up.

Sonali~ "Nikhil! Come on, wake up. Its already 7:30 in the morning. I told you last night not to stay up late or else you will not be able to wake up and get ready for the pooja on time."

Nikhil in half asleep mode "Please mom, I just want to sleep a little longer and I will get ready on time. I promise."

Sonali~ "Your promise means nothing if you will not even remember making it 2 minutes later. So come on, wake up and get ready fast. I m going to check up on payal and by the time I get back... I want you standing up on your feet."

Nikhil makes a thumbs up gesture and falls back to sleep again.

Sonali goes to check up on payal and finds out that payal is missing from her room. From the looks of the condition of the room, it seemed to her that payal had not been at home last night. Worried for payal, she runs down to check up downstairs. When she reaches in the hall, she notices payal standing with dadi ji, talking over the decorations.

Sonali~ "Payal?... I just went up in your room and seems like you were not there last night. Where were you last night?"

Payal~ "Mausi ji, my room's centralized airconditioner was having some troubles last night so I moved in the guest room. I told rahul bhai and he said he will call the maintenanace to have a look at it today after the pooja is done."

Sonali breathed easy and relaxed for little while and then resumed her duties to have everything ready for pooja.

Meanwhile, rahul and maanvi were getting ready to come down in the hall for the pooja and family get-together. Rahul puts on his indian cloths and ready up in front of the mirror. He was humming a tune as he was getting ready. Just as maanvi comes around in the reflection of the mirror and rahul sees her... he freezes watching her set up her saree pleats. When maanvi looks up and notices rahul frozen in front of the mirror, maanvi calls him out.

Maanvi~ "Rahul? Are you ok? You look like someone called out statue' to you and you are frozen in your place."

Rahul snap out of his staring at maanvi's mirror reflection and turns around. "Nope, nothing like that."

Maanvi~ "Then what is it?"

Rahul~ "You know... I look so dashing and handsome in any cloths that for a moment, I almost forgot I was looking at my own reflection in the mirror."

Maanvi~ "So what you are trying to say is that you usually look horrific that you didn't recognize yourself as looking like this?" she gestured to his look from head to toe with her hand.

Rahul~ "Oh hello! All the girls and ladies dies to have just one look at me."

Maanvi~ "You are absolutely right! You are such a marvel that you should be kept as a display in a zoo and there should be ticket to watch you do circus tricks on stage." She smiled.

Rahul~ "What!?... Do you always have to start all this from the morning itself? I m your loving and caring husband. You can at least show some respect for me."

Maanvi~ "Oh really! But I wasn't the one who started this. You started it first. I know you were staring at me through the mirror. All I wanted to say is if you think I look pretty then you can say it, instead of holding it all in. But you started to praise yourself as if you are some breath-taking handsome prince who is charming in no matter what he wears."

Rahul decided to play maanvi's own prank on her. "As a matter of fact you are right. I was wondering that now people will start to point out that you are growing a little fat. But not to worry, it is all too normal for women in this condition. But if I say that to you, you would get upset at me. I just didn't want to spoil the mood."

Maanvi gasped at his comment. "What!? I look fat? You are the one who keeps saying the I m the most prettiest lady in your life and now you call me fat!"

Rahul~ "Like I said, you don't have to be upset about it or anything maanvi. This is very normal for ladies who are in same situation like you... I mean ladies who get pregnant all look a little fat."

Maanvi~ "And that is all your fault! You put me in this mess!... Fine then. If you have that much problems of me looking fat then I will go to my parents house today after pooja. Then you won't have to look at me."

Rahul seeing the situation getting out of hand tries to calm her down "Oh my dear Mrs. Maanvi sabarwal. You are so gullible. You don't look fat at all, I was just teasing like you were doing to me few minutes ago. Don't have to go so far as to going to parents house over it." He walks up to her and turns her head to look in her eyes. "You look gorgeous and breath-taking that I almost forget everything around me when I look at you. I m the luckiest person on this planet to have you as my wife."

Maanvi blushes a little at his comments. "And I m lucky to have such a loving and caring husband. Who is just as much charming and handsome as a prince from a fairy tale could be."

Rahul~ "So I m your prince charming, huh?"

Maanvi blushes and breaks the eye lock. "Ok now let me get ready quickly or mommy ji will scold me for being late for the godh-bharayi." She goes in front of the mirror to get ready.

Rahul sits close by on the sofa and keeps staring at maanvi as she does her hairs and puts on her jewelery. Each time their eyes meet, a small smile will spread across their lips.

Rahul starts humming the tune again.

A few minutes later there is a knock on the door. Payal was sent by Sonali to check up on the two whether they were ready yet or not.

Payal~ "Mausi ji has asked me to bring you both in the hall quickly so the rituals can begin. Pandit ji and your parents have already arrived. Dadi ji and dada ji are talking with your parents while mausi ji is checking up the preparations with pandit ji if anything is missing."

Rahul~ "Alright, we get it. You really need to breathe and calm down there for a few moments. Guess you have been on heavy duty on this one as well."

Payal~ "Sorry. Lot of work to do. Its hard to catch a break when you have been tasked to go and wake up Nikhil and get him to reach down in the hall before the pooja begins."

Rahul~ "Its all right. You stay here with maanvi and get down to the hall once maanvi is ready. I will go and get Nikhil. This way you can catch a break and I will feel little more useful than I usually do in family functions."

Payal and rahul smiled as if they shared a private joke while maanvi felt a little confused. After rahul left, payal explained to maanvi how Nikhil most the time plays video games till late at night and wakes up late in morning. So it is a tough task to get Nikhil to get up early for anything. If someone can get Nikhil to wake up early and get ready for something, that is a monumental task achievement.

A minute later, Maanvi gets a call from raj. Raj has called to wish maanvi on her godh-bharayi. He wished her well and then they disconnected the call. A small tear formed by the corners of her eyes. Maanvi wished for a sign that raj has started to accept her as the daughter-in-law and this was it.

Rahul and Nikhil comes in and rahul notices the tear.

Rahul~ "What's wrong maanvi? Everything ok?" he asked in a worried tone.

Maanvi~ "Rahul... papa ji just called to wish me on my godh-bharayi. He has started to accept me as a part of this family." She replied as a tear of joy rolled down her cheek.
