"How could you Geet, how could you? Who does such a thing?? I mean this is the height of evil." Maan asked her in an utterly desolate and betrayed voice.
Then he looked at Abhinav and pointed a finger at Geet.
"Sir you have to arrest her for this crime against humanity. Please lock her up and throw away the key."
Geet did not look fazed by his threat at all, nor did she have even an ounce of remorse on her face after the heinous crime she had committed.
"Well then why did you say that to me? How could you Diez, how could you? And that too to your best friend. I mean that is the height of evil." She looked at him smugly as she laid the crime right back at his door with the same exact words he had used.
Abhinav looked at the object of dispute between the two and shuddered. Who in their sane mind shared an ice cream cone, he wondered. Weren't they even bothered by the fact that the human mouth was supposedly the dirtiest organ of the body. That cone was probably crawling with the combination of two oral toxicities. He took a sip of his coffee and then a bark of laughter burst out of his throat as he looked at the two idiots before him and the rapidly melting ice cream that was running down Maan's arm. There was a gaping hole at the bottom of the cone. He decided it was time to tune into the conversation.
"Geet what kind of an insane person bites off the bottom of the ice cream cone first?" Maan shot her a horrified look.
"Diez what kind of a monster warns their friend from eating off the last bite? You told me...no threatened me that the last bite was yours. I absolutely love the chocolate piece at the bottom of the cone and obviously if you eat the last bite you get the chocolate and so I settled the matter. I got the chocolate, now you can have the last bite."
Even as she uttered the final word, the remainder of the ice cream plopped through the hole right onto Maan's sneakers.
"Children!!! Children!!! Calm down. Abhinav uncle will buy you each an ice-cream of your own" Abhinav called out before Maan followed through with the murderous look in his eyes. They both looked at the man who called out to them and then rushed towards him.
"Sir!!" I swear I will murder her one of these days." Maan glared daggers at her.
"Inspector Sir you are the best. I want the Double Chocolate flavor." Geet who always took things at face value rushed over to hug him. However, right on cue, just before she reached him, Maan or rather Geet's, Diez pulled on her braid and dragged her back.
"Ouch Diez. Let go. What's your problem?"
"I ...that is.." He fumbled around for an excuse. Geet had no sense of personal space. She gave her hugs liberally to anybody and everybody and he hated that. His hand had instinctively shot out to pull her back before his action even registered on his mind. He grimaced and let her braid slip through his palm.
"Don't touch him with your sticky hands Geet, you know sir doesn't like it."
"But my hands are clean Diez. The ice cream did not drop on... Her voice trailed off as he glared at her.
Abhinav lifted the coffee cup and hid his smile into it. Maan did not realize it, but his actions were louder than any excuses he spouted. He raised his gaze and looked at the young pair sadly. They were getting closer day by day, but their time together was slipping away through their fingers and they were completely unaware of it. It had been six months since he had first met them both at the police station. Maan was meant to be an assignment for him and Geet was not even supposed to be in the picture. He was a loner by nature and did not want to get emotionally involved with them. However, somewhere along the way of doing his duty he had unconsciously been drawn into the world of these two individuals. Geet with her bright open nature and Maan with the glint of hero worship in his eyes that he tried to cover so hard had snuck into his affections and that scared the hell out of him.
His gloomy thoughts were dispelled in the next instant as his hand tightened involuntarily around the unique handle of the coffee cup and as it often happened when he was around these two yet another grin tugged at his lips.
He remembered the first day he had walked into Bowled Cafe a month or so after their first meeting. He had called ahead and had been invited over to Cafe. He had entered the cafe to find Maan and Geet involved in one of their infamous and insensible arguments. The object of argument had been the unique cup he was to be served coffee in.
"But Diez, I think this is just the right cup for inspector sir. Besides I think it's cute." She held the cup up and inspected it with adoring eyes.
"What bullshit Geet. You would have him drinking coffee out of that commode?" Maan's voice was incredulous.
"Why not? Anyway it's way better than that gun shaped mug you are trying to foist on him. I hate guns. They are evil."
"He is a cop Geet. He handles one practically every day and I think it's perfect for him."
Abhinav cringed with horror as he looked at the toilet bowl shaped cup that Geet was holding and then turned his gaze to the mug that had a pistol grip for a handle that Maan was holding.
(The unique cups😆)
Another person with glasses, who he later learnt was Praneet, the owner of the cafe had tried to be the voice of sensibility and pitched in his two cents.
"Maa...I mean Diez...Geet, I think since all the cups in the caf are white, a different color should be good enough for your friend. Don't you agree?"
"Absolutely not Praneet Da." They had both protested instantly and vehemently.
"He needs a cup that is uniquely his own that another person would not even think of touching." Maan explained.
Geet nodded vigorously in agreement and continued.
"And therefore I suggested the toilet bowl cup. Nobody would want to touch it."
"Neither would the person for whom it's meant Geet." Maan argued.
Now, Abhinav looked down at the pistol grip mug in his hand and the toilet bowl cup that sat on the main counter. He had kept the pistol mug for himself and suggested the other one be used as a tipping jar and thus settled the argument successfully.
Praneet had looked at him with twinkling eyes and a fake sympathetic smile.
"Welcome to Bowled Cafe where we serve coffee and a slice of insanity, Inspector."
He settled back in his chair comfortably and looked on indulgently at the two of them. Geet was chattering dime to a dozen Maan as usual was looking at her with exasperation in his eyes one moment and laughing out loudly the next at something she said. That was so much like them. She had him wrapped around her little finger, but both were completely unaware of it.
