Chatt or Chatt Mahaparv is dedicated to Sun God and Goddess Shashthi who is also identified as Devyani, the consort of Lord Kartikeya. Shashthi is the goddess of fertility, family and protecting deity of children. It is celebrated dedicating it to them!
There are two very famous stories behind it. One is that Karna used to offer prayers to Sun God immersed in water of Ganges and offered him Prasad after severe fast of two days. So this is one origin story.
Other one is after the birth of Suthanu, Draupadi had invited Sakaldweepi Brahmins and performed Chatt under their guidance and that is how it began!
