I Am Right Here
She held his hand as tears rolled down her cheeks. He was weak but fought hard to keep his eyes open. It was clear that he was having a tough time to speak but still he mumbled
"Why are you crying?"
Suman's grip tightened
"Please don't leave me. Please Stay."
"Who said I'm going to leave you? I'll always stay with you. In your heart."
Suman kissed his forehead and struggled to wipe her tears
"No. You are staying and that's final."
"You stupid girl..."
His voice was becoming weaker. The oxygen mask was making it more difficult for him to speak. The doctor came to check his pulse. He sighed as he took a look at Suman and then at the people surrounding her
"Mrs Malhotra, I know this is hard for you to accept. In fact all of you. But the truth is that his vital signs are not good. And he has a very short period of time left. Please I know this is not easy but you have to face the reality."
That was Suman's breaking point. She rested her forehead on their joined hands as he took his last breath.

Suman stood steps away from the place where his last rites were performed. I couldn't take in her crying face anymore. It broke me to see her in so much pain. I was standing right beside her but still it seemed like we were miles away. I needed to hold her close. Close to me. Close to my heart.
So I engulfed her in my arms and rested my chin on her head. After a while she spoke
"He left us Shravan. Nanu left us."
I held her tight as she sobbed
"No Sumo. He will always be with us."
I pulled away and cupped her face. Wiping away her tears, in an attempt to wipe away her pain along with it, I kissed on her forehead and then again encaged her in an embrace. I closed my eyes as I felt her heartbeat and let her feel mine
"And I'm right here Sumo."
