Chapter 39
Mr. K was sitting in his room, turning the table light on' and off'. He closed his eyes to picture the day he had a running into some guy at the bar. Mr. K had just came into town to find out that Mrs. Gayatri sabarwal had died few years back and to overcome his grief, he had come to this bar. He has his wallet in his hand as he was paying off his tab with the credit card, when a drunken guy came to close his tab and bumped into him. The wallet fell to reveal the photo of gayatri in it. The drunken guy knew gayatri as he was the one raj hired to do his dirty work and he started to blabber some stuff. Mr. K brought this guy with him and tied him up. Once this guy was sober, Mr. K interrogated him well to learn the whole truth.
His world was turned upside down when he learned of the ugly dark side to raj sabarwal. He swore that day to make raj pay for everything he did in tears and blood. As for the drunken guy, he was never seen or heard from ever again.
A servant comes in with juice and medicines. "Sahab, aapki dawa ka samay ho gaya hai."
Mr. K signals him to come in and put the tray on the table. "Thank you ram lal."
Ram lal~ "Sahab, main to sirf ek naukar hoon aur apna kaam kar raha hoon. Bhale insaan to aap hai jo aap mere parivar ka itna khayal rakhte hai."
Mr. K~ "Mere liye koi message to nahi aaya aaj?"
Ram lal~ "Nahi sahab, koi message to nahi aaya. Ek ladka aaya tha aur kuch kagaz de kar gaya hai jo aapke office ki table par rakhwa diye the."
Mr. K~ "Theek hai, main dekh lunga." He gets up, takes his medication and finishes the juice. Then heads down in is office.
It was a nice room which was well organized and yet would make a person feel the personal touch. There were lot of awards and tropies on the right hand corner showcase while the adjacent wall displayed lot of photos. Behind the dest was a bookcase with files and books on various art and music forms. Left side had a window that allowed light to come in on the desk. On the desk was a packet resting next to a desk name plate "Mr. Kishan Singh Khurana".
Mr. Khurana opened that packet to reveal the contract papers for rahul's new album and modified contract papers for shaleen's album.
His plan was perfect. Get the sabarwal sons in his pocket before he starts using them to torture their father. He thought to himself "Rahul is simple and straight-forward. I would feel bad to do this to him but it needs to be done. Afterall, raj didn't hesitate... not once when he decided to send those men to kill you gayatri."
He closed his eyes to play back the old memory.
"... Tell me... How did you kill this lady? Everyone said that she died in an accident."
A 25 years younger Mr. Khurana asked the guy he found at the bar, blabbering in drunken state after he saw gayatri's photo in his wallet.
Guy~ "I don't know anything, please sir you must be mistaken. Let me go home sir." He whimphered in pain.
Mr. Khurana twisted this guy's finger to a breaking point which made him scream.
Mr. Khurana~ "I m not breaking your fingers yet but if you don't start talking soon, I will start pulling out your nails one by one, then skin your fingers... And you will live long enough to watch me do this to you."
Guy~ "Please, don't do this sir. I don't know anything. Even if I did, I cannot tell you or he would kill me."
Mr. Khurana could keep torturing this guy till he talks or he could try to appease his better nature. He decides to try the later option.
Mr. Khurana~ "What if I give you three choices... A; You tell me what I want to know and I will protect you to be my witness when the time comes. So you can tell everyone aboyut the guy who hired you to kill this lady... B; I torture you to the extent you start talking... or bring your family here and torture them in front of you till you start talking... C; I do this the hard way. That I kill you and your family and find this truth on my own without your help."
The guy put a deep thought and asked "Would you protect me and my family from this guy?"
Mr. Khurana~ "I would. On my word, you and your family will be well taken care of... but you will have to tell me every detail about this murder. Also when the time comes, you will have to be my witness and help me prove to the world that this was a murder... well planned murder and not some accident."
The guy believes Mr. Khurana and narrates the story.
He described how Raj contacted him. He told that he was a science major student in his final year, working on some serum for defence purpose. His serum could cause heavy internal bleeding and that person would die in about 24-48 hours. Perfect for any terrorists who, country is forced to trade, for the life of innocent civilians. All the military will have to do is inject this serum and release the terrorist, who will still die after he is released.
Raj some how must have heard that he was working on this serum and wishes to do more research but since he was from a weak-background family, he could not get his work funded. Raj promised him funds for all his research, for the rest of his life... in exchange for a small service.
That night, raj somehow got gayatri to come by the new by-pass route, where a truck awaited her car. The truck hit the car and made it look like hit and run case. The car accident was not very severe and that gayatri would have lived. But the second part was devious one. This guy would be there and find the unconscious gayatri, inject her with his serum to make it look like she is suffering from internal bleeding because of this accident. Then bring her himself to hospital. This way no one will suspect why raj would fund his research out of the blue. And this whole murder would be a crime that will look like an accident.
Some time later, raj denied his promise to fund his research and threatened him for his life and his family. That's when he started to drink and ran into Mr. Khurana.
Mr. Khurana was not like raj. He brought this guy's family to live and work for him, and he funded his research as well. In return, this guy helped Mr. Khurana to gather up every evidence against raj, related to the night of murder of gayatri.
Since that day, ram lal, that guy's father, has been working for Mr. Khurana as his servant. This guy's research has been well funded and has been used by the Indian military in many cases. Mr. Khurana had taken care of that guy's family well as he had promised.
It was a bright morning. No one could tell that last night it had rained. Rahul wakes up, feeling a little sniffy. He looks around and don't see maanvi.
Just then, maanvi enters the room with a tray of some light breakfast.
Maanvi~ "Good morning rahul. How was your last night?"
Rahul~ "Good morning maanvi. My last night never felt better." As soon he completed his sentence, he sneezed.
Maanvi~ "Yeah... the rains and the dancing must have quite some effect. Now you must be enjoying your cold as well, right?"
Rahul~ "I don't..." (sneeze) "...have any cold."
Maanvi~ "Oh please Mr. Sabarwal, we both know that you tend to catch cold easily. And since you absolutely hate taking medicines..." she served up some hot herbal tea and handed it down to him "...here is some nice and warm tea for you to help with your cold."
Rahul noticed one more cup on the tray. "And who else is that one for?" Pointing at the other cup.
Maanvi~ "I know you would make excuses not to try this herbal tea. So, if I would say that I will be the one to drink this tea with you... you might like to change your mind."
Rahul smiled "I wouldn't say no to something my beautiful wife brings for me... that too in bed! But it's good to know that she likes to join me for anything... be it a rain dance or breakfast in bed."
Maanvi looked in his eyes and could see the similar shine he had when he asked her to dance with him in the rains. "Don't make talks and drink your tea first, else it would go cold."
Rahul~ "How can I start? You didn't serve one for yourself yet..."
Maanvi smiled and served one for herself and they both enjoyed their little tea time. Not sure what they enjoyed more... the tea or the short eye locks they shared in between every 1-2 sips of the tea.
Payal didn't get much sleep last night. Her dreams from the vikas's success party were still bothering her. Today, she had planned to meet vikas as he had requested from her. She planned to talk to him and make sense of what she had felt that day. If needed, she would clear out any wrong signals he must have gotten from what happened that day.
She got up, took a shower and got ready to meet everyone down for the breakfast.
She had told vikas that she will message him about the time and place suitable for their meeting. So far the only place she could think of was the restaurant where they met. Her mind was certainly clouded by those memories and until she figures them all out, she will probably keep feeling like this.
She reached down and found that she was the first person to arrive at the table for breakfast today.
Payal~ "Chotu bhaiya... Kya abhi tak sab uthe nahi?"
Chotu comes in with food and places it at the center of the table. "Nahi payal didi. Sab uth gaya hai aur abhi aate hi honge. Aap baithiye, main aapke favourite sandwitch le kar aata hoon."
Payal "Thank you."
Just then dadi and dada ji came to join at the table.
Dadi ji~ "Kya baat hai puttar, aaj tum sab se pehle aa gayi ho. Nahi to tum sabko bulane ke liye chotu ko bhejna padta tha."
Payal smiled with her. "Wo kya hai na dadi ji, tension mein bhook jyada lagti hai isliye jaldi aa gayi."
Dadi ji~ "Tension? Acha, kal raat jo tum keh rahi thi uss hi bare mein?"
Payal's head didn't catch that as the only thing on her mind was vikas. "Huh? Kya Dadi ji?"
Dadi ji~ "Arre tum hi to keh rahi thi ki nayi responsibility hai... Khud hi bhool gayi?"
Payal~ "Oh... nahi. Nahi bhooli dadi ji. Haan uss hi bare mein tension ho rahi hai."
Dadi ji~ "Rahul ne kaha hai na ki wo help karega. Mujhe tum bacho par pura vishwas hai ki sab acha hoga. Tu tension na le puttar. Tum sab milkar, sab sambhal loge."
Payal shake her head in a nod.
Everyone started to come down and join the breakfast table. Rahul was the first one to break the silence this time.
Rahul~ "Mom... abhi pooja mein time hai na. To main soch raha tha ki kyun na maanvi aur main pehle uske ghar, uske maa baba se milkar aa jayein? Phir hum dono aapko mandir par hi milenge."
Raj took the notice immediately "Upamanyu ghar aa gaya?"
Rahul~ "Oh, main batana bhool gaya shayad. Haan... unko hosh aa gaya tha aur kuch din pehle hi wo discharge ho kar ghar aaye hain."
Sonali~ "Yeh to badi achi baat hai. Theek hai beta, tum dono maanvi ke ghar ho kar wahi mandir par hi milna."
Rahul~ "Thanks mom."
Dada ji, dadi ji, Sonali and payal were delighted with this news. Shaleen and Nisha were indifferent as usual while raj still held to his hatred towards upamanyu.
