The government is expected to publish proposals today for the expansion of Heathrow Airport. The plans should include the development of a third runway. Does Heathrow need to be any bigger?

The planned expansion, including a third runway, could see passenger numbers increase from 67 to 128 million travellers per year.

The aviation industry says a bigger Heathrow is vital to protect the economies of London and Britain as a whole.

Local residents have been briefed on the proposals but are still concerned about the impact of any expansion, despite assurances from the government that a new runway won't breach European standards for local air quality and noise.
