Chapter 34

The pebble street restaurant was packed full today as there was some party going on. Our trio arrived at the restaurant and the manager lead them to their table reservation in VIP private area. Maanvi was curious about the party as lot of high class people were gathered who maanvi recognized from the photos in papers.

Maanvi~ "That party seems nice. What is it about?"

Manager~ "Oh, this party is for the completion of country tour of new album by Mr. Vikas Gil. They say he got lot of praises for his latest album - Dastaan."

Payal~ "I have heard his songs from the latest album. They were amazing! Can you ask him if we could join?" she asked excitedly.

Rahul~ "Payal? I thought you wanted to have lunch with us?"

Payal~ "But we all could join Vikas Gil! You know him don't you? Why don't you go and ask? I want to meet him once, please..." she was chirping like a 5 year old wanting a candy bar.

Rahul~ "Payal... it would be rude to join them un-invited. If you want to meet him I m sure we can arrange it some other time. I know he is staying in town for next few months."

Payal~ "But..." making a puppy doll face.

Maanvi~ "Rahul is right payal. It would be very rude to gate-crash his party like this. I know if you want to meet him, rahul will certainly have it arranged for you."

Manager left the trio to attend to his other duties, while a waiteress attended to their table.

In the party, vikas was accepting all the praises from his guests. Some of them mentioned stuff about rahul's new concert and how he did special performances with his wife.

Vikas~ "Wow, I didn't knew rahul's wife is talented singer. Now I m curious to meet them."

Guest1~ "You had known rahul some years back, right?"

Vikas~ "That was long time ago. We haven't seen each other since."

Guest2~ "Well then, you would be surprised as I saw him entering the VIP private area few minutes ago. He is with his wife and one other lady, who I saw at the concert but I don't know her."

Vikas~ "Really! Well it must be some coincidence that we are all here at this restaurant." He went to manager to ask where rahul was sitting. He personally wanted to invite them to join the party.

Manager also informed vikas that one of the ladies with rahul is enthusiastic to meet him as well.

Our trio barely got the first course in when vikas came to them. When vikas approached them, rahul stood up to greet him.

Rahul~ "Hi Vikas. You look great. Congratulation on your latest album and completion of country tour."

Vikas~ "Hi Rahul. Thanks. One of my guests saw you entering the restaurant, so I thought why don't you guys join us?"

Rahul~ "Its all good buddy. We didn't want to crash your party."

Vikas~ "You call me buddy and still do all these pleasantries? There is absolutely nothing as crashing my party. You are just as welcome as my other guests." He turned around to the ladies "Won't you introduce me to the beautiful ladies?" he could tell by maanvi's dress-up that she is rahul's wife. So he took maanvi's hand and kissed it "You must be the gorgeous Mrs. Rahul Sabarwal."

Maanvi~ "Hi, I m Mrs. Maanvi Rahul Sabarwal."

Payal took the opportunity to introduce herself "And I m payal, rahul's cousin. It's really nice to meet you."

Vikas~ "Pleasure is all mine. Please come and join us."

It was hard to deny an open invite from vikas when payal was so enthusiastic to meet him, thus our trio joined the party. Rahul may not have shown but the way vikas greeted maanvi, it may have caused him a little discomfort. When our trio joined the party, lot of people greeted them. Soon the discussion moved from vikas's country tour to rahul's latest concert success.

Lot of questions were asked of our trio about any new developments like;
"...will you be working on any new album together?... there have been hushed whispers that there will be few changes in both the albums... will there be any duet songs out anytime soon?..." and so on.

Our trio kept the discussion very short and so they do not release the news before it is posted through media as it would be wrong to talk about their projects when this party is about vikas and his album. Then followed the lunch. When everyone was back to more gossiping, Payal managed to slip from the group to go and talk to vikas.

Payal~ "Mr. Vikas, may I have a moment please?"

Vikas excused from his other guests and turned to payal "Sure miss. What can I do for you?"

Payal~ "Maybe it sounds odd to you that me being rahul's cousin and yet here I m wanting to hear you sing a song, as in, right now."

Vikas~ "You know you can just say; would you sing a song for me."

Payal~ "That's what I just said. Or did I? Are you mind reading? Maybe I should just stop talking?"

Vikas smiled "Relax, I get it. You love my songs. I will sing a very special song, just for you."

Vikas heads to the piano and signals the manager. The lights dim out leaving only the piano section lights bright. Vikas plays the tune from song Wajah Tum Ho.

Song ends and the applause from the guests, pull the four of them back to their present. More praises followed for the dance and the song. That was indeed a dance performance that left lot of things the four of them wanted to talk about to each other but not in public.

Once the party was over and all guests started to leave, vikas approached payal and asked her for a suitable time he can come and talk. This time payal was not the same chirping, excited girl anymore when she first went to talk to vikas; she was her proper, mature self now who didn't expected the way things went down on the dance floor. She wanted to avoid any direct discussion about the dance. Whereas rahul and maanvi were avoiding eye contact in front of everyone but that only meant that a good conversation awaited them when they will be alone and out of everyone's earshot.

Rahul maanvi and payal returned home. They were tired so they went to their respective rooms.

Payal decided to take a shower to shake of the memories from the dance floor. But her mind kept going back to the way vikas and she were dancing so close and it felt like something just connected them that had never happened with anyone before. "And what is this about meeting up later to talk...? He must have thought that I m some crazy fan girl who would fall for him just like that... but he was a gentleman, no denying that... meeting up once to talk wouldn't hurt, right?... if he is getting any wrong signals its better to stop it right there than dragging it further. Good point, I would do just that."

Payal was happy to have sorted out her inner-struggles and the solutions she deviced gave a sense of peace.

Rahul and maanvi on the other hand were still avoiding eye contact.

Maanvi couldn't forget how rahul cut in between dance to pair with her. Usually that would be considered rude but she found it cutely funny that rahul did so because he was jealous although if confronted about it, he would never admit it.

Maanvi~ "Vikas is a great singer, he has such a good quality of voice. What do you think rahul?"

Rahul~ "If you say so."

Maanvi~ "If you say so?... you were dancing to his song as well so don't tell me you didn't like his song."

Rahul~ "I never said I didn't like his song. Sure his song has good lyrics but he could certainly improve his singing."

Maanvi~ "Mr. Rahul sabarwal is turning into a critic, that's a new side you don't see everyday."

Rahul~ "Are you mocking me?"

Maanvi~ "Why would I mock the famous rockstar rahul sabarwal? Afterall he is the god of music."

Rahul~ "Stop mocking me maanvi. I never claimed that title. It's the making of my dad and my fans. I just do what I do the best, which is writing songs and singing them. As far as being critic on someone else's song, if you weren't too busy dancing with vikas, you would have noticed as well that he missed few notes."

Maanvi~ "I wasn't busy dancing with him. You know well that I don't know how to dance."

Rahul~ "For someone to not know how to dance, Mrs. Maanvi rahul sabarwal... you danced quite nicely during holi party... then at my concert... and today at vikas's success party."

Maanvi~ "I wasn't doing it for myself, if I mess up it would look bad for you that your wife don't even know how to dance. But speak for yourself, I was pulled in by vikas... what made you cut-in in the middle of the dance?"

The arrow that was zooming around has found its target. The question maanvi wanted to ask that would need rahul to express his feelings was finally in front of him. Rahul stared at maanvi with no reply to her question. The silence stretched until maanvi's phone rang.

Chapter 35

The call was from the city hospital.

Nurse~ "May I speak to Mrs. Maanvi sabarwal?"

Maanvi~ "Yes, this is she."

Nurse~ "I m calling from city hospital. Doctor Rajni has asked me to remind you that you have a scheduled check up today with her. Can you give me a confirmation that you will be coming today or you wish to reschedule?"

Maanvi~ "Yes, I will come."

Nurse~ "Thank you." Then the call was disconnected.

Rahul~ "Who was it? You are supposed to meet someone?" he inquired.

Maanvi gave him an annoyed look "First you don't answer my question and then you expect me to answer all your questions...?"

Rahul~ "Which question?"

Maanvi~ "The question, that when I was pulled in by vikas for dance... what made you cut-in in the middle of it? You didn't answer it and expect me to answer your questions. From now on if you don't answer my questions, I don't think I feel the compulsion to answer yours." She did the small head jerk to show her disappointment and left the room.

Rahul~ "Always looking for reasons to fight with me... how m I supposed to answer her questions if she don't give me a chance to answer them? Not to mention that there is no way of knowing what will set her off like the way it just did without me even saying anything." He thought for a moment then decided to go with her.

Maanvi was waiting for driver to bring the car, when rahul came following her. Maanvi looked at him once when he stood next to her. There was no way to stop him from finding out where she was headed. When driver gopal stopped car in front of them, rahul as usual went to the driver side and asked gopal to attend to his other duties as he himself will drive maanvi to her destination.

Maanvi took a deep breath and went to sit in the back seat of the car. Rahul took the driver seat and said "Kitni bar kehna padega ki main tumhara driver nahi hoon, pati hoon. To kya aap aage aake bethengi?"

Maanvi~ "Maine to driver ko jaane ke liye nahi kaha. Driver ko to aapne jaane ke liye kaha hai. Jab driver mujhe drop kar dega to aapko drive karne ki kya zaroorat hai? Agar mere saath hi chalna hai to aap saath mein chal sakte the. Driver ko bhej kar khud drive karne ki zaroorat nahi hai."

Rahul~ "Mujhe apni biwi ke saath akele ghumna acha lagta hai... jab wo fizool mein mujhse ladne ke mood mein na ho."

Maanvi~ "Main fizool mein ladti hoon? Ek seedhe se sawaal ka jawaab dete to banta nahi hai aur kehte ho ki main ladti hoon."

Rahul~ "To abhi aap kya kar rahi hai Mrs. Maanvi rahul sabarwal?"

Maanvi stared at him for a moment then quietly got in the front passenger seat, pull up seat belt and sat there.

Rahul~ "Ab please yeh bhi bata dijiye ki aapko jaana kahan hai to hum chal sake."

Maanvi rolled her eyes and replied coldly "City hospital."

Rahul understood that the call must have been for first general check-up by Dr. Rajni. He had promised himself that he would take care of maanvi everyday and would never miss the appointments with the doctor. Thus this was him keeping that promise even though he had forgotten today, but wouldn't let that happen again.

Someone walking in a dark corridor, headed to a locked room. They take out a key, open the lock and enter the strange looking room. The room was lit with few candles; some photos of a lady on the wall and on stands, a diary and some other stuff were carefully placed on the counter. There was no mistaking that this room was a dedicated shrine to the lady in the photos.

The stranger caresses the lady in the photo and speaks in soft voice
"He took you away from me. I will take away everything that he holds dear. He will suffer like I did for past 35 years. He will learn what pain and suffering is when you lose the people dearest to you. Raj's one prank in school that made me go away... and when I returned, you had married him. Then the accident that took you away somewhere I could never see you again... I swore that day, that I will make him pay for everything... Gayatri."

Sonali was holding an old photo album, looking at a photo of her with the same lady. "Gayatri... humesha sochti hoon ki agar aaj tum hoti, to kaisa hota. 25 saal pehle tumne ek wada manga tha ki raj aur rahul ko kabhi tumhari kami mehsoos na hone doon. Sach to yeh hai ki mujhe khud tumhari kami mehsoos hoti hai, to main dusroon ke liye tumhari kami kaise puri karoon?"

A tear falls on the photo. There was knock on the door, Sonali quickly wiped her tears and put the album aside. She answers the door, it was dadi ji.

Dadi ji~ "Kya hua Sonali puttar? Tu ro rahi thi?"

Sonali~ "Nahi mommy ji. Aisa to kuch bhi nahi hai."

Dadi ji~ "Mujhe maloom hai tum apni pakki saheli gayatri ko yaad kar rahi thi. Kal uski barsi hai na."
(*barsi means death anniversary)

Sonali~ "Haan mommy ji. Maine gayatri ko diya wada nibhane ke liye uski jagah to leli, par uski kami kabhi puri nahi kar sakti."

Dadi ji~ "Sonali puttar... Gayatri ki kami sabko lagti hai. Par tumne jo wada usko diya, usko puri tarah se nibhaya. Kabhi bhi iss baat ko jhutlaya nahi ja sakta. Acha batao phir... kal humesha ki tarah tum, rahul, main aur rahul ke dada ji hi mandir jake Pooja karenge?"

Sonali~ "Iss bar mujhe lagta hai ki iss Pooja mein humare saath koi aur bhi chalega."

Dadi ji~ "Maanvi puttar ki baat kar rahi ho na?"

Sonali~ "Ji mommy ji, agar aaj gayatri yahan hoti to wo maanvi ko zaroor pasand karti. Isliye mujhe lagta hai ki kal humare saath maanvi ko bhi chalna chahiye. Aur koi chale na chale, maanvi humare saath chalna chahegi."

Dadi ji~ "Theek hai. Tum pandit ji se humesha ki tarah Pooja ki taiyari karwa lo, main maanvi se baat kar lungi."

Sonali and dadi went back to their usual work after the discussion to prepare for tomorrow's Pooja.

Rahul maanvi reached the hospital. They made their way to Dr. Rajni's room. Nurse informed them to wait for few minutes while Dr. Rajni checks up on her other patients before them.

Rahul maanvi took their seats in her office. Rahul looked around then turned to maanvi, "Arre yaar ab to maaf kardo. Kab tak muh fulla kar baithi rahogi? Pure raste tumne mujhse koi baat nahi ki. Aaj ke liye itna gussa kafi nahi hai kya?"

Maanvi~ "Jab tak tum mere sawal ka jawab nahi dete, tab tak main tumse koi baat nahi karungi."

Rahul~ "Acha meri maa... main tumhare sawal ka jawab dene ko taiyaar hoon. Pucho kya poochna hai."

Maanvi~ "Main apna sawal pehle hi pooch chuki hoon. Ki vikas ki party mein jab vikas mujhe dance ke liye le gaya... tab aap beech mein kyun aa gaye?"

Rahul~ "Kyun? Main apni biwi ke saath dance nahi kar sakta? Uske liye mujhe bahane ki zaroorat nahi hai. Agar tumhe bura laga ho to... agli bar jab tum kisi aur ke saath dance kar rahi hogi to main bhi kisi aur ko le kar dance floor par aa jaunga. Tab theek hai?"

Maanvi's forehead suddenly formed crease "Mere hote hue tum kisi aur ko dance floor par le kar jaoge?! Tum aisa soch bhi kaise sakte ho rahul?!"

Rahul~ "Arre... abhi to tum aise lad rahi thi jaise tumhe mere saath dance karna acha nahi lagta. Ab tumhe mere saath kisi aur ka dance karna bhi pasand nahi? To tumhi batao, ek rockstar agar party mein spot-light avoid karega to acha lagega kya?"

Maanvi thought to herself "Rahul, you managed to find a way to avoid talking about how you felt when I was dancing with someone else, but I will not give up so easily yet." She was certain that there will be more chances for her to make him talk.

Rahul thought to himself "I know what you wanted to make me say but I won't be so easily tricked."

Soon Dr. Rajni entered and greeted them. They had long conversation over their medical history, family medical history, any on-going medications, dietary adjustments, normal check-ups, caring and precausions.

After the long session, Dr. Rajni set up the next appointment after 6 weeks. She also told them to consult her in case of any needs or for advice.

Rahul maanvi left for home. Rahul would smile every few minutes looking at maanvi.

Maanvi~ "What now? Why are you smiling at me like that?"

Rahul~ "No reason."

Maanvi~ "You are definitely up to something. Why don't you just say it."

Rahul~ "Nothing maanvi... don't stress over it."

Maanvi~ "Tell me or I will... I will..."

Rahul smiles "You will what? Threaten me again over something that's just your imagination? You know what... you cannot stand to spend a day without fighting or threatening me."

Maanvi~ "You are saying that I like to fight with you? And who likes to provoke me all the time? You just love to tease me, taunt me and create troubles for me. Right now again you are the one who provoked me to say things I don't want to."

Rahul~ "Ok... guilty. That's what you wanted to hear? But I can assure you there was nothing that you needed to concern over."

Maanvi~ "Then why don't just say what were you smiling about instead of making excuses rahul?"

Before maanvi could say anything more, her phone buzzed. It was a call from shilpa asking them when they both plan to visit her home. Upamanyu has been dischanged from hospital but strictly recommended to bed rest. Knowing upamayu's nature, it was apparent that he was not following up doctor's instructions and only maanvi rahul might be able to convince him to take rest.

Rahul turned his car around to visit the chatergee residence.

Upamanyu had the whole place in chaos. He was complaining over his musical instruments not in their place and covered in dust, then he complains about his students missing over music lessons and practice, and so on.

Rahul and maanvi could hear him yelling at the corner of the street.

Rahul~ "Now I know where you get your fighting talents." He whispered to himself in low voice.

Maanvi~ "What did you just said?"

Rahul~ "Nothing... just that your dad has quite the spirit after being in coma for over a month."

Maanvi~ "We can talk about it later, first we need to help maa and dada to get baba to accept doctor's advice and take bed rest until he fully recovers."

Rahul smiled "Right... that would be fun."

This time, even maanvi couldn't stop but smile at that comment.
