Chapter 328: The Sting of Truth
The sound of the lock turning made Kushi sit up, her eager heart hoping earnestly to see Ram and Anarkali walk in.
But instead, her heart sank when she saw the tall longhaired man enter, a bottle of wine in his hand.
The door shut behind him and he made his way towards the dining table.
Kushi stood up and watched him uncork the bottle and take a swig of the wine. Gulping it down noisily, he turned to her and held out the open bottle.
Kushi declined with a firm shake of her head.
He smiled knowingly and took another swig, his unconcealed green eye glinting excitedly.
"You should be celebrating with me, my Chandraki."
"Whatever for?" asked Kushi bitterly.
"The work is nearly done here," he reported casually, "We will be sailing for home tomorrow."
"This is my home. I am going nowhere with you."
He stared at her, "Don't you want to know your real family, see your real parents...?"
Kushi bit her lower lip. She felt devastated. As much as she was tempted to know her true past, she was unwilling to discard the person she had become and the people she had come to love as her family.
"I have a husband," asserted Kushi, "I cannot leave him."
The man snorted, "What kind of husband do you have who sends his brother to do the hard work of rescuing you while he stays in his rich palace grieving his loss?"
Kushi was taken aback. She had been led to assume that Lord Arnav was the one in the Castle. Of course, Ram had not given any hint of having personally seen him and could have merely recounted the inference he'd obtained from a random conversation.
He looked at her through the green of the wine bottle, "So you will come with me, Chandraki, won't you?"
Kushi looked at him, "Why should I? What reason have I, to leave behind everything I know and love, to follow you?"
His green eye swirled in deep mystery, "I am the man to whom you always belonged..."
Kushi was repulsed, "That cannot possibly be, since you claimed yourself to not be my father."
The man smiled warmly, "What does it matter who I am in relation, my precious one?"
"It matters," said Kushi sternly, "I am a man's wife... carrying his child in my womb."
She didn't want to tell of her child to anyone before she'd told of it to her husband but circumstances required that her reasoning weigh greater to her advantages.
A venomous look appeared in his face at Kushi's revelation, "Carrying? Well, I don't care about the child. Only you."
Kushi scowled, "I care about my child. And I am not leaving this land or my husband."
All warmth dispelled from his voice, "If you cannot be mine, Chandraki, you cannot be anyone else's."
He moved towards her, reaching his hand out to take hers but she stepped back and stated impertinently, "I will go nowhere with you."
Her refusal enraged him and, in one stride, he was before her. She raised her hand to strike him but his quick hand deflected her move and held her wrist captive, grasped in his hard, cold fingers.
Kushi struggled to free her hand but his strength was invincible.
"I have tried to be good to you but you still refuse," he growled disappointedly, his eyes began to darken, "You always refused..."
And then, as she watched in horror, she saw his mouth descend to her hand that he held. His lips closed around the tender skin of her wrist.
In bewilderment, she watched this incomprehensible feat but gasped in shock when she sensed a strange sting where his mouth was.
Miles from time, in the darkness of a pit, the ambiguous Lady in the Dark Hood smirked in profound delight.
The vicious pain on her wrist was momentary and Kushi blinked confusedly at the man.
He looked at her, expecting her to be writhing in pain or swooning.
But what he saw on her face turned him pale.
Stunned, he stared at her in disbelief.
Finally, he asked in a note of caution, "Who... Who is your husband?"
Kushi looked straight at him and spoke thunderously, "Lord Arnav Singh Raizada."
He let go of her wrist as an unearthly terror flashed across his visage.
