ZOYA RAPS ON MUMBAI'S STREETS

It's been 10 months since her last film, Dil Dhadkne Do, a family drama shot aboard a cruise ship, opened on June 5. And Mirror has learnt that Zoya Akhtar has locked her next film and will go on the floors with it shortly.
Zoya made her directorial debut in 2009 with Luck By Chance. The film featured brother Farhan in the lead and was critically acclaimed, but commercial success came with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, a coming-of-age story about three childhood buddies, Farhan, Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol, who take a road trip through Spain in the course of which their lives change dramatically.
Over the last five years Zoya has been constantly asked about a follow-up to the bromance. While there have been speculations about a sequel, this one isn't it. Tentatively titled, Gully Boy it is another coming-of- age film inspired by real life rappers from Mumbai's chawls. A source close to the director told Mirror, "Zoya is a huge fan of hip- hop music and for long has been intrigued by these ghetto artistes many of whom are extremely talented and even with resources and exposure, have created a space for themselves in the music world."
The writer-director is now all set to go down another off-beat gully. "As part of her research she has been hanging out with internet sensations like Rapper Divine and Rapper Naezy. And they have helped in a big way to shape her script," adds the source. Rapper Divine aka Vivian Fernandez is a self-taught rapper who wrote his first song, "Yeh Mera Bombay" in 2011 and released it two years later.
The ode to the Maximum City was followed by "Meri Gully Main", a take on Mumbai's street life and "Jungli Sher" on his struggles. The last video was directed by Vandana Kataria the production designer of films like Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!
It was shot across 43 locations in Mumbai over four days and nights using an iPhone 6 and 6s. Naved Sheikh aka Rapper Naezy quietly uploaded his debut track "Aafat" on YouTube. It painted a fascinating picture of "thug life" in the Kurla ghetto where he grew up and exploded on the Indian hip-hop scene with his Urdu sl*g inflected lyrics. With Gully boys like these one can definitely say that Zoya's on the write track!
