Nana,Akshay and Aamir helps out drought affected Maharashtra

Some of the most famous names from the Bollywood fraternity have come forward in a bid to lessen the water crisis in the drought-hit state of Maharashtra. We have seen how Nana Patekar has been actively helping the farmers of the affected areas. This time, two other actors have also joined hands with the Maharashtra government to bring about a relief for the drought affected areas.

Aamir Khan has come forward and adopted two villages " Tal and Koregaon " in Maharashtra. He is also touring the drought-hit areas of the state to teach villagers the technique of water conservation. Aamir, along with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, recently launched the Satyamev Jayate Water Cup, which is a water management and decentralisation contest among the villages of Maharashtra. In this competition, villages will be involved in water conservation activities, with the winning village bagging prize money of Rs. 50 lakh. The contest will be held between April 15 and May 31. Aamir is also working for water management in Maharashtra through a separate initiative - the Paani Foundation. In 2001 also, Aamir had adopted a village in Bhuj, Gujarat which was devastated by earthquakes.

Actor Akshay Kumar also passed his support by donating Rs 50 lakh for Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyaan. This Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan is a state-sponsored initiative to make the villages in Maharashtra drought-proof. This initiative will also be involved in the construction of ponds in farms to harvest water.

Maharashtra is currently witnessing one of the history's worst drought situation in several areas. Out of 43,000 villages in the state, 27,723 villages have been declared drought-hit and 54 out of the 75 medium dams have been declared dry. The state is left with mere 380 cubic metres of water for use, making life worse than hell for the farmers and their families. Around 2,590 farmers ended their lives between January to October 2015, reported The Hindu. This year also, at least 57 farmers have committed suicide till March 1.
