MUSIC REVIEW OF MUMBAI SALSA
By Satyajit

'Mumbai Salsa' brings out the lifestyles of metro-centric youthful couples who crave for love, lust and money. The film is an engrossing urbane musical drama that forays into the innovative musical impulse of Salsa music and dance. It's a typical multiplex style of entertainment where hi-profile urbane life is depicted with bunch of new talents in lead roles. The film also marks the debut of director Vikram Bhatt as producer and the film is directed by debutante Manoj Tyagi. The star cast of the film includes new acting talents comprising names like Linda Arsenio, Indraneel Sengupta, Dilip Thadeshwar, Manjari Phadnis, Vir Das, Neelam Chauhan, and Ray Irani in the lead roles while pop diva Alisha Chinoy makes a special appearance. Singer-turned-composer Adnan Sami has composed musical soundtracks that are heavily based on Latino salsa musical format. Sameer has penned urbane friendly lyrics with delightful voices and enchanting music. 'Mumbai Salsa' delivers musical entertainment with nine original soundtracks that can be heard on Big 92.7 FM music cassettes and CD's.

MUMBAI SALSA (2 VERSIONS) : The fiery combination of Adnan Sami and Alisha Chinai's racy and pulsating voice along with ear-piercing Salsa dancing music sets the pulses racing high and vibrant in the title track "Mumbai Salsa". Sami's skilled rendition delivers fine sets of salsa grooves with heavy inputs of stylish Latino trumpets and trombones tones flowing high and low. The title track delivers an alluring dancing passion on the floors where one can sense the fervor of "Mumbai Salsa" in the loud and animated vocals. It's a peculiar Salsa musical treat that is blended abundantly with pulsating sounds of drum sets, saxophones and peculiar Salsa percussive elements.

This title impressed Alisha Chinai to an extent that she readily agreed to feature in the song by playing club crooner in guest appearance for the song. The second version of 'Mumbai Salsa" features Alisha Chinai as solo singer with similar tonality and lyrical flows. Both versions are highly entertaining and will be gracing occasions in parties and discos. Go for it!!! FRIDAY (2 VERSIONS): The upbeat Salsa makes another animated move as the passion gets along to another pub-specialist disco soundtrack "Friday". It has sensuously driven Gayatri Iyer at the helm of affairs with loud and peppy orchestrations to give it extra tangy edges. Like "Mumbai Salsa", this number can also be expected to crooner specialist number with high pitched raunchy singing and thunderous orchestrations. Adnan Sami's music is jarring and noisy in middle interludes and loses momentum to some extent. Gayatri Iyer's vocals are stylish but they are too flashy and screechy at some times. Kunal Ganjawala joins Gayatri Iyer in the second version that comes with more thriving orchestrations with snazzy saxophone notes along with synthesizer works delivering louder impacts. This version is more playful for dancing floors and will be DJ's delight as it boasts loads of disco stylized entertainment in its racy flows. AKELI ZINDAGI: Shaan's supple mellifluous flows with sentimental flair of Salsa music shine brightly as it delivers moments of mushy romance in impressive soundtrack - "Akeli Zindagi". It's really delightful to hear this tuneful work from Sami as he clubs the elements of soft rock with upbeat Salsa musical works to deliver a romantic track. Sameer's meaningful wordings are beautifully harmonized into rhythmical musical works that make it a cordial love track. Shaan excels in this trendy solo romantic track that has innovative Spanish musical tinge in its melodic flow. This idealistically rendered number deserves to be choreographed aesthetically and should be a bright factor for the film. CHOTI SI INTEZA: "Choti si Inteza", a poignantly romantic track, is one of the finest sentimental works by talented Adnan Sami in recent times. It's beautifully mesmerized in softer melodic tones where intense Sami's vocal penetrates effectively with supple classical instrumental flows. Sameer's wordings are the best in the album and convey love struck emotions of a loner in soulfully heartbreaking lines. The song has penetrative melodic flows of touching "shehnai" and violin notes that get streamlined with impressive keyboard notes. This soundtrack is likely to work as catalyst in pensive and distressing situations with great aplomb. It's really a delightful treat for all Adnan Sami's fans as this is where the singer-cum-composer excels to perfection. Enchanting!!! PYAR SE (2 VERSIONS): After cheerful and intense singing, "Pyar Se" brings mushy romantic flair of music with a tinge of jazz music in its flows. Its ordinary effort this time as wordings sound routine and the musical arrangements sound lackluster. Shaan along with Shreya Ghoshal delivers this conventional Bollywood romantic number. The second version of "Pyar Se" has Amit Kumar's voice emoting the groovy textures of the intense impulse of the track with similar wordings and arrangements. It has free flowing saxophone notes that work progressively with vocals but again the tenderness for sensuously driven emotions is missing. SALSA (MUSIC): The finale of the album comes with "Salsa (Music)", a brief instrumental work where stylish Latino percussive elements form amiable relevant alliance with bass guitars riffs, saxophone and violin notes. This instrumental piece delivers a signature tuneful feel to the album and can well be worked out as an effective background score in significant moments for the film.

Adnan Sami's latest musical exhibit in 'Mumbai Salsa' entertains for its peculiar musical styling of Salsa music with couple of remarkable soundtracks. It has spicy Salsa musical flavors in "Mumbai Salsa" and "Akeli Zindagi" while "Chot Si Inteza" comes as a big sentimental surprise for all Adnan Sami's fans. It's difficult to expect surprises in low profile album but Sami excels again after 'Dhaamal' and 'Lucky-No time for love'. After 'Manorama Six Feet Under', this album comes as another big musical surprise of this year among low budget entertainers but will be surfacing tough times for its low promotion and bleak face value.
