Minakshi had a good life, or that's what she liked to tell herself. When on one fine day, her boss decided to go on a vacation and give her all of his work, at that point she had decided she'd had enough.
"I am so done with this job. I have no space to even breathe. I QUIT!" she declared banging her fists on her work table.
She complained to her mother over the phone about how frustrating this job had become. leaving her with no choice but to quit her job.
"Maa! I have quit my job. It was too much for me to handle. I was swamped with work. I need a break. I have decided to renounce all the worldly pleasures. I am going to the great Himalayas and meditate on my isht deva, Lord Shiva. I'm leaving, maa. Goodbye." she said dramatically before hanging up, leaving her mother stunned by her outburst.
Unlike the old times, Minakshi decided to take a few clothes with her, because obviously, Himalayas are cold. She had one final plate of her favourite "gol gappas". Who knew when she'd be able to eat them again?
The following day, she started her trek to the perfect spot but since the path was treacherous, she stopped way earlier next to a grove.
"Om Namah Shivay, Om Namah Shivay!" she uttered, endlessly. Thus began her rigorous tapas to propitiate Lord Shiva.
A year passed by. The other Gods sent many distractions her way to stop her severe penance but nothing could stop her. Only the appearance of Lord Shiva could. Such was her devotion to the Neelkanth. Pleased with her dedication, Lord Shiva finally decided to descend on Earth.
"Open your eyes Minakshi." She opened her eyes at the sweet call by the mystical voice. She looked around, but found no-one in sight.
"Right there in front of you, my little flower!" She stood amazed as a divine form materialized out of the thin air.
'Oh' is all she could say. Her ishta dev, Lord Shiva stood before her smiling at her with divine radiance.
"What can I give you, my child?" he asked.
"I need nothing, now that I have got to see you in person!" she said, wonderstruck and offering him a Pranam.
"Oh, but I must give you something. Okay, let's see what you have in your mind!"
Saying thus, he proceeded to read her mind.
"Okay, darshan of us, Shiva-Parvati? Granted. A gyaan from dear Krishna? Granted. Ah, what is this I see? A lifetime supply of panipuri?" Lord Shiva chuckled, "So be it."
Minakshi could hardly believe her ears. Her Lord Shiva stood before her and granted her the things she had longed for all her life! She could only stand gratified.
The form of Shiva faded as the dual form of Shiva-Parvati started to form.
Strange noises came from it. "Wake up! Wake up!" it seemed to say. With a jerk Minakshi realised that she was merely asleep inside her work cabin and her colleagues were desperately trying to wake her up. As soon as she opened her eyes, they shouted,
"Happy birthday, Minakshi!"
