'I'm not suited for saas-bahu serials'

Kanwarjit Paintal, best remembered for his roles in Satte Pe Satta and Bawarchi has been very selective when it comes to television offers. Currently seen in Amber Dhara, he's also working in three films. Aprajita Agarwal meets the actor to find out his success story

Q. How did you bag a role in Amber Dhara?

A. I initially refused the role because of my image as comedian. But my producer convinced me to accept the offer and now I'm happy with the decision. I play Amber and Dhara's grandfather Mahendra Pratap Singh. Mahendra Pratap is a happy-go-lucky man who believes in living life to the fullest. He came to Panchgani during the British era and settled there since then. He is a proud Indian with a great British hangover, which is reflected in dressing and lifestyle. He loves Amber and Dhara and always supports them in whatever they do.

Q. You haven't worked in saas- bahu serials. What's the reason?

A. My personality doesn't suit such roles and that is the reason I am not offered roles in these shows. I always aim to do satisfying and challenging roles.

Q. Any upcoming films?

A. Raat, Chaitanya Maha Prabhu, Jeete Hain Shaan Se are some of my upcoming films.

Q. Have you done theatre?

A. Yes. My next play Arre Mad About Money will be staged in Europe this month. It has 10 shows will start from November 28.

Q. You have worked in films as well. How was the experience?

A. Bawarchi, Piya Ka Ghar, Heera Panna and Satte Pe Satta are some of films from the 1970s and 80s. One of my popular roles was as Champak Bhumia in Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar. I have worked with some of the best names in the industry and it has been a great experience.

Q. What you have to say about your son's (Hiten) acting?

A. He is working with me in my next movie Raat. He plays the lead character of a kidnapper and I am his elder guide who teaches him the tricks of kidnapping. Gradually, his character turns positive. Hiten is a good actor knows he'll be the next superstar of the industry.

Q. What would you like to say to aspiring actors?

A. Acting is a satisfying profession but demands professionalism, commitment and sincerity. That's what I teach my students at the International School of Media and Entertainment Studies (ISOMES), Noida and FTII, Pune.

Q. What you have to say to your audience?

A. I am grateful to them for showering their love and hope I continue acting till the end.
