PART TWENTY FOUR - QAHWA
We had to wait for a table since we hadn't made a reservation, but thankfully, it was only a momentary wait as we were led to our secluded table fairly quick. I pulled out the chair for Sanyukta out of habit, and her familiar smile didn't go unnoticed by me either. Settling down and ordering our food, I waited for her to begin...

Taking a sip of the ice cold water, I began. "You are only aware of bits and pieces, and so I'm just going to tell you everything from the start."
To say I was nervous would be an understatement considering my heart was racing and my palms were sweaty. He put his hand on mine, "I need to know Sanyukta..." were his only words, but they were consoling enough. Breathing in deeply, I narrated to him the story I had lived out in these past couple of years.
"It kind of all began a long time before I left, so around 2009. We were halfway through our third year and had been together officially for just over a year. I knew you wanted me to tell my parents about our relationship, but I convinced you otherwise because I wasn't sure they would understand. But when your parents had begun fighting excessively, and dragging you between their fights, I knew I needed to be there for you. And for that, I figured out it'd be the best if someone from home at least knew why you were so important for me. And so, that one time I went home for a week, I wanted to tell my mom. About you. About us."
I knew he wanted to say something, but he kept mum, prodding me to continue rather than interrupting. Biting my lip, I hesitantly spoke again, "But before I could even say anything..."
--
"Sanyu, your father was telling me that he's been getting a lot of proposals for your marriage. So make sure your weekends are free from now on, okay? We're letting you finish your graduation, but you're going to need to get married soon after, so it'd be good to at least get you engaged by this year. That way, you will also have a chance to get to know your husband and in-laws, and we'll have enough time to do the wedding preparations."
She spoke as if our conversation was about a topic like what we were going to have for dinner that night. The casual tone in her voice irked me. "But Ma, I'm only 21. Why do I need to get married right after finishing my degree? I want to apply for some internships and get some experience in the field!"
Turning the tap off and wiping my hands, I faced her, "It'll really help me when I begin applying for jobs! Not to mention it'll be the perfect opportunity for me to polish up my CV!"
The look I had received in return had me a little stumped to be honest. "Sanyu, I don't know if it's a good idea. And also, you said this in front of me, but don't you dare say it in front of your father! He's not going to like it."
"What do you mean by that? Is my engineering degree just for fun?" I voiced out my frustration with sarcasm. "I'm obviously going to get a job after! I'm working so hard for this degree and you want me to get married and just be a housewife?" I couldn't understand her rationale, at all!
"You have to get married though, or are you against that as well?" I rolled my eyes in response; leave it to mothers for becoming so dramatic. "Leave what we think aside, but I'm sure your husband won't want you working a job. And don't worry Sanyu, we'll find someone who earns well so you won't have to," she smiled widely, her hand caressing my cheek.
I wasn't sure if I should be amused or enraged right now... Unaware of what to do next, I just figured it was the right time to tell her I had already found someone. "Mom, you know there are many guys out there who would not only be okay with their wives having a job, but who would even encourage their wives to be independent! In fact," I paused, contemplating my decision to let her in on the secret I was holding on to since so long, but I became impulsive for a moment and went with the flow, "Randhir never raised an objection about my choice to build a career for myself!"
She had clearly missed the point as she went on to say, "It doesn't matter what he says Sanyukta. But it will matter what your husband says. And now, stop arguing with me on this topic. I'm not going to entertain your questions any longer!"
I sighed... I'm going to need to be very direct with her. "Mom, he's the one!?" I said, getting up from the chair. Her pacing along the kitchen slowed down a bit, "What do you mean?"
Taking a deep breath in, "I'm in love with Randhir Ma! I want to marry him, and no one else," I said all in one breath. She froze in her spot, anger soon taking over the initial shock. But before she had even uttered a word, I felt a strong arm on my forearm turning me around. His hand met my cheek hard, tears involuntarily dropping from my eyes after the impact.
Walking away furiously, dad picked up the phone to make a call. I ran to him, "What are you doing dad?" but he pushed me away, refusing to speak to me. "Sharma ji? Yes, yes. How are you? Actually Ashwin ji was telling me you were looking for a bride for your son Vishal?" My eyes widened in shock, "Dad, no please no!" I sobbed. But to no avail as he had already asked them to join us for dinner tomorrow night.
"Dad, we really love each other! Randhir and I! The only reason we didn't tell you earlier was because we wanted to focus on our careers first!"
But he was acting as if I hadn't said a word. "Anju, make sure she has something nice to wear for tomorrow. And also, tell her she has to cook for everyone! If they like her, we'll get them engaged as soon as possible."
--
"Well that went on for I think like 3-4 families. Every weekend would be some new guy and his family. Sanyu make this, Sanyu make that. I was honestly so sick of it all."
"Did you not try to convince them otherwise again?"
I gave him a blank stare. "Do you really think I didn't?"
--
--
"Dad but I love Randhir! And he's an amazing person! At least give him a chance!" By this point, you could hear the desperation in my voice. "Ma, you understand right?"
But who was I kidding... She backed off...
This was unreal; I never knew things would go this awry. "Dad, mom... Please! Give Randhir just one chance! He's the perfect one for me! Give us one chance?"
"What's his name?" "Randhir!" "Full name!?" His harsh voice frightened me. "Randhir Singh Shekhawat," I somehow managed to whisper.
He walked over to our living room and grabbed a newspaper that was lying on the table, slamming it into my hands.
*Renuka Sanyal/Shekhawat asks for divorce, Harsh Shekhawat blames her for infidelity*
My heart dropped as I read the title.
"If his parents are this shameless, I can only imagine how their son will have turned out."
--
--
"Remember that night you sneaked into my room to tell me about your parents?"
Randhir nodded, "Well that was actually how I found out."
He let out a frustrated laugh, leaning back into the chair. "Ruining my life is really one of the only constants in their lives. Well, along with fighting and alcohol," he remarked sarcastically.
"Well anyway, my mom had actually seen you leave that night." He straightened up in his chair right away, causing me to smile. Raising his eyebrows, he asked me, "Why are you smiling?"
I stopped smiling and shrugged, "Just your reaction now. Okay moving on, so the same old drama began again. She slapped me, emotionally blackmailed me, blah-blah-blah. You know how it is. Although I didn't take her that seriously, turns out that really was the last straw."
Pursing my lips, I thought about how to phrase this without having to say his name. But there really was no option. "And then came the Mittal family."
"Sameer," Randhir growled.
