Part 4

"Never means never ...Kabhi bhi nahi, Khushi!"

Khushi just stood paralyzed, too shocked to react. The silence hung in the air, like an ugly monster ready to swallow everything she had- Her happiness, her life, her family. She felt everything slipping out of her hand, and she just stood there watching it slip. No! She can't let this happen. Everything she has worked so hard to achieve, she can't let it slip just like that.

She lifted her trembling hands to wipe the perspiration from her forehead. This has to be some nightmare. How can a day which was supposed to be the best day of her life has turned out the worst? She lifted her eyes to look at the man in front of her, and knew this wasn't any nightmare, this was real. And everything they had was at stake. She can't let this happen. She has to do something, something to gather everything which was threatening to shatter.

"I..I .." she started.. "You ... you don't mean that, right? ... You are just scared , right?" She fumbled with her words, not knowing what to do- whether to cry for not getting what she had dreamt of, or to once again fight his past's demons for him. But if she don't want to lose everything, she will have to forget about her dreams and do the latter one. "I..I..." she walked towards him and lifted her trembling hand to touch his cheek. "I know you are scared ... But trust me, everything will be fine. We will visit the Doctor, I will take care of myself , everything will be just fine, please believe me ... Please be happy ... we are going to be parents , be happy please ..." some tears spilled out from her eyes. Her day was ruined, but she won't give up.

"I don't want your words, Khushi ... I mean it what I said ...I don't want this baby..." he looked down at her flat stomach, his stomach churning. "I...I just hate it ... I can't stand this ... I ..." He moved back and ran his hand on his face. "I hate it, damn it! I just can't stand ... can't stand pregnant women ...I ..." he ran his hand in his hair, a rush of nausea hitting him hard. She has to understand this, he can't live like this. He will die. "Please ... please understand me ... I can't do this ..not for anything.. Please ..Understand it, Khushi!!" he blasted, the devastated look on her face twisting sharp dagger in his chest, making it difficult to draw breath.

Khushi's legs trembled. What doesn he mean by he can't do it? Her hand lifted to touch her stomach. He don't want this baby?

"What are you saying, Arnav ji ?" she asked, the dread gnawing at her.

He groaned and strode towards her , catching her shoulder. "Abort it. I don't want that baby! You have to do it!" He ragged and soon felt a stinging on his cheek.

Khushi jerked away from him. "Stop it! What are you saying? Are you even listening to yourself? Devi Maiya! What are you saying! Just stop it Arnav ji!" She sobbed.

"I won't stop! We are getting rid of that baby!"

Another slap landed on his cheek. "STOP IT!!" She pushed him away. "You are sick! How can you be so heartless? You are a coward ... A coward you are, Mr.Arnav Singh Raizada! You had a bad experience, and now you are afraid to walk down the same path just coz you think you will meet the same faith. You are a coward! I won't live with a coward...You ... you can live your whole life with your fears.. ..I am leaving"

"What did you say, Khushi?" he asked, his glare murderous.

"I said I am leaving with Ebu .." she said in a controlled whisper.

Arnav inched closer and held her shoulder. "Say that again?" he asked in a frightening whisper.

Some tears spilled out from her eyes. She looked down, her hair covering her face. She don't want him to see her tears. If he doesn't care about her happiness then she won't think , too. She was so happy , so happy to share the news of her pregnancy with him. She had thought he will hug her with joy, twirl her around, kiss her, and say the words which he had held back all these years. But the reality was far from what she had envisioned. He has ruined her special day. It can never be fixed.

She jerked away from him and wiped her tears. "I am leaving. I don't want to live with a man who lives in his past and ruins everyone's present.." she lifted her eyes to look at him.. "...including his own"

"You can't leave! Stop this nonsense!!"

She looked at him determined. She can cry all she want when she is alone, but she won't break in front of him. "Watch me!"

She walked past him towards the cupboard and pulled out a bag.

"You are not going anywhere, khushi!"

"I am!" she stuffed some of her cloth in the bag and stood facing him.

"I am leaving, Aranv ji... You have ruined everything... Now you and your fear can live here alone.." Not looking at him, she strode towards the door.

"Khushi!!"

Khushi entered Ebu's room and picked him up.

"You are NOT leaving!!" He thundered, waking up Ebu.

"What happened , Amma?" Ebu opened his groggy eyes.

Khushi tilted her head to look at Ebu. "Nothing, baby ... Go back to sleep..."

"Khushi ..."

But before he can say anything, she started. "I am going to Bua ji's place. If you can't accept that baby, then you won't get me, too. I am tired of everything. When you get tired to nurturing and living with your fear, then you can come and get me. Bye.." saying that, she walked past him, leaving him standing there.

"Amma, what happened? We are going to Nani Bua's house?" Ebu asked.

Khushi looked down at him and nodded, blinking back her tears. "Yes.."

"Why? Isn't Daddy coming with us?" Ebu asked.

"No...I hope I am doing the right thing..." she kissed him. "Everything will be fine soon ... I promise.."

Ebu smiled. "Amma is always right.."

His sweet trusting face made her want to huddle in some corner and weep her heart out. Swallowing the lump, she kissed his hair. "I hope so, baby"
