Review: Saawariya 3.5/5 --------- OSO 2/5

A little Moulin Rouge, a pinch of Devdas, a slightly over-enthusiastic Ranbir Kapoor in a towel(I was so afraid of that towel falling off in that song..Indian movie directors have now discovered that naked men sell more than naked women.) and a slightly neurotic Sonam Kapoor..

Oh yeah, baby. That's Saawariya.

In my books, its better than OSO. Most people seemed to find it too slow. But then those are the kind that don't read short stories, or Dostoevsky. (yeah I'm trying to be wry.)

Well yeah.. Salman Khan looked good! Honestly good! Ranbir Kapoor - see you want so bad to loue him... but a little too many pelvic thrusts and weird dancing. He also does overact a little bit, but then..what the hell, if SRK can do it, so can he.
The movie is slow.. not for someone who wants only the wisecracks. It almost felt like it was in Russia when the snow started - nice touch.
Sonam Kapoor wowed more than Deepika Padukone (maybe its also because I liked what she was wearing throughout - such pretty jewellery!).
Again, I'm pretty sure I liked this film more because of the sets. Awesome sets. Some of the music was very pretty - about 3 songs specifically, that 'masha allah' song and couple more. Rani Mukherji was an entertaining spark, as was Zohra Segal.

Like the publicity says, its a simple story - and that's the beauty of it.

Anywho, there are some similarities between the two films.

a. both male protagonists resort to skin show.
b. both use that extremely irritating sort of english (where you put an 's' at the end of every word)
c. in both stories, girl is betrothed to someone else. (and I'm so happy, for obstinacy's sake, that in neither of the films does the guy get the girl despite his 'cutesy'ness. Take THAT, stupid male stereotypes.)
d. both try to throw in a dialogue or two from an old film (OSO - 'dosti mein no sorry no thanks' - plus a hundred more, and Saawariya ' Kya tumne kabhi pyar kiya?' audience : 'kiya!')
e. oh, both are linked to the song om shanti om! (Rishi K gives dialogue that's used in Saawariya before he starts the song).

Saawariya is openly theatrical. Sometimes that's all you require from a film - a storybook setting, a storybook tale, a lot of implied mysteriousness. Hated the overacting, and is he REALLY shadowboxing??(god, what the hell is he doing?) And why does he keep shaking his head like that? Its annoying!

Oh so much to poke fun at, so little time
Plus its Diwali and I feel kind.

Sigh, ok..Ranbir Kapoor has cuteness potential.
Pretty movie, a 3.5 on 5, OSO gets 2.
